Winemaker's Notes:

The mountain grown fruit in this Syrah results in a wine that's full-bodied and complex with smoky, earthy notes and dark berry flavors. A nice backbone of tannins makes this wine great for food pairing, it goes well with everything from burgers to Boeuf Bourginon.
My Notes:

About Vine Hill Winery:

There is something really satisfying about seeing a long-held dream unfolding before your eyes. Such is the circumstance in which Nick Guerrero, Managing Partner of Vine Hill Winery finds himself. Nick and his team have embarked on a journey that continues a long tradition of winemaking in the historic Vine Hill Wine District. Established in 1867 by George and John Jarvis the wine district housed the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company of which John Jarvis was the president until his death in 1892. Jarvis also founded Union Vineyard in 1877. It is this historic site that is today's Vine Hill Winery.

Nick sees himself as the team's "coach." He lets each individual create their own template for success and is always there to lend a guiding hand as needed. "Putting other's first" was not always Nick's mantra, but as he has evolved, so has his opinion on managing people. He believes that the winery environment engenders an individual's reach for excellence and the ability to collaborate for the common good. Nick understands that this opportunity cannot always be seized in larger, corporate environments, or on the manufacturing room floor. That is why he feels extremely lucky to be surrounded by such outstanding individuals in an environment where their greatest success is celebrating great winemaking and all the efforts that support this goal.

Additional wines from Frei Brothers:

About Frei Brothers:

In the late 1880s, an enterprising Swiss immigrant by the name of Andrew Frei gazed upon the rolling hills, gentle streams, and fertile soil of Sonoma County and saw a wine glass of opportunity. By 1890, he was the proud owner of a 344 acre vineyard in northern Sonoma, giving birth to a winemaking tradition that is very much alive today.

Frei didn't waste any precious time once he acquired the land. By 1895, he was producing 20,000 cases of high quality wine that was stored in huge redwood casks.

In spite of a devastating blight of phylloxera, by 1904 the winery had actually increased in size and production. Now in his seventies, Frei turned the business over to his two sons, Walter and Louis. In 1903, the winery was officially named Frei Bros.

The Frei Bros. Winery continued to grow over the years, in spite of disasters such as the one that occurred in 1919, when a curious piece of legislation that came to be known as Prohibition put many an American winery out of business.

Again, the Frei family persevered, and now you can taste the legacy of a great winemaking tradition in Frei Brothers Reserve, a new release that combines the spirit of old world winemaking techniques with grapes that are hand selected from some of Sonoma's finest vineyards.

Additional wines from Franciscan Oakville Estate:

About Franciscan Oakville Estate:

Franciscan is one of Napa Valley's most venerable wineries, reaching back more than three decades. Franciscan wines take their signature style - rich, vibrant flavors framed by supple tannins - from the ideal climate offered by Napa Valley's cool, southern half and from the time-honored tradition of small-lot winemaking, blending from hundreds of barrels to craft fine wines that fully express the classic Bordeaux varieties.

Franciscan was founded in 1972 by a group of lawyers and doctors from San Francisco who decided to try turning their passion for wine into a business. In 1985, Agustin Huneeus, a Chilean exile who had built Concha y Toro in his native country, took over the helm at Franciscan. Huneeus refocused the winery on using the superlative grapes growing in its own vineyards, rather than sourcing from outside.

Today, Franciscan's wines are crafted under the exacting eye of Janet Myers, who came to Franciscan in August 2003 as associate winemaker after working in the Margaret River region and Beaulieu Vineyard, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Louis Martini. The winery remains committed to its tradition of small-lot winemaking, with small batches averaging just 150 to 1,500 cases. The image of a hand-operated wine press on Franciscan's logo and wine labels reflects this small lot approach to winemaking.

Each of the North Coast's renowned winegrowing regions brings unique fruit character and structure, including herbs and blackberry flavors from Sonoma County, cherries and spicy notes from Mendocino County, and earth tones and mouthfilling tannins from Lake County.

The 2010 North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon is a true crowd-pleaser. It is delicious with grilled tri-tip, a wood-fired pepperoni pizza, or eggplant parmesan.

Additional wines from The Dreaming Tree:

About The Dreaming Tree:

You might know Dave from his day-job as a professional musician, but his passion for winemaking stretches back nearly as far as his love for music. With a winery in Virginia under his belt, Dave's no amateur, but when he chose to lay down roots for roots in the California wine country, he knew he couldn't go it alone.

When Steve Reeder and Dave Matthews first met, they realized they had a few things in common, like a passion for making wine at least as strong as their passion for drinking it. They set out into wine country, looking for a way to make quality wines accessible to everyone. Along the way, they found inspiration in the down-to-earth characters and unforgettable flavors that give the region its rare kind of charm.

Simi 2008 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, deep garnet color with a ruby edge. Enticing aromas of baking spices, hints of cedar, chocolate, and toasty oak notes frame bright fruit of red cherry, black plum, and cranberry. These aromas carry forward to flavors of red plum, cassis, blackberry, and cherry preserves gently spiced with lively cedar and clove. This medium- to full-bodied, nicely structured wine finishes with rich, dark chocolate tannins.

This Alexander Valley Cabernet is irresistible with wild mushroom pasta, snapper Puttanesca, and duck confit with lentils.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Simi:

About Simi:

In 1876, brothers Giuseppe and Pietro Simi began making wine in San Francisco from Sonoma County grapes and eventually planted vineyards near Healdsburg. Simi's historic stone cellars were built in 1890 and are still used to age the wines. Today, Simi is recognized as a leader in innovation and experimentation with a history of over 125 years of cutting-edge winemaking.

Their Alexander Valley vineyards possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region. Years of geologic activity – from an ancient mudflow to the meandering Russian River and Mayacama Creek – has created numerous distinct soil types and a range of microclimates. Here they grow the red Bordeaux varietals for their Reserve Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for their Sendal.

Their Russian River Goldfields vineyard is planted to field selections chosen from the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California. The combination of diverse clones and the cool, Russian River Valley climate produce Simi’s distinct Reserve Chardonnay.

Simi's winemakers focus on site-specific winemaking and use the most modern advances in vineyard management, fermentation and blending to best express the personality and flavors of each vineyard site.

Deep ruby red colored with an intense bouquet of wild red fruits and spices, well-structured and powerful. This wine may be enjoyed as early as you like, but no doubt it will improve during the next ten years.
My Notes:

About Marques de Grinon:

Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova, Marquis of Griñon, has pioneered the modernization of vine growing and winemaking in Spain. He is a grandee of Spain and Vice President of the Spanish Gastronomical Academy and President of the Castilla La Mancha chapter. In 1974, he introduced Spain to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties. This was but the first step in a series of daring pioneering innovations by the man responsible for the great wines of Marques de Grinon. Years ago Carlos Falcó Fernandez planted a high canopy management vineyard with drip irrigation, advised by Richard Smart. With direction from Emile Peynaud and Michel Rolland, a partial root drying system was devised for planting Syrah and Petit Verdot, and launching the collection of grapes at night which here-to-fore was unheard of in Spain. These innovations contribute to the production of the complex fruit driven wines of Marqués de Griñón.

Located in Malpica de Tajo, 50 kilometers from Toledo, the vineyards cover a surface area of 50 hectares in the historic Dominio of Valdepusa (family owned since 1292). Currently, 42 of these hectares are used to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Syrah varieties using a mixed system that allows for the use of the most advanced technology, canopy management. This was the first vineyard in Spain where the technique was implemented.

Yet another stellar vintage in a string of odd-year dandies. This primary wine of our production offers a merge of red and black fruits, delicate spiciness from carefully selected American oak barrels, and deep brooding opaque color. There is a generous back palate of supple but not shy tannins, a graceful flow across the palate, and a fine, debonaire finish.

Made with full extraction and long skin contact, this wine is made to maximize body and weight while having long silky tannins. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of ripe dark cherry and blackberry notes with mocha, clove and a hint of vanilla. This wine offers lush, juicy cherry and blueberry flavors. On the palate, sweet vanilla, clove, and a hint of cinnamon are brought forth by the nuances of French oak aging. Seamless with a nice long finish, this wine is very elegant with a fine structure.
My Notes:

About Atlas Peak Winery:

Atlas Peak was established in 1987. Over time it became clear that Atlas Peak's most valuable hidden resource was literally underfoot: the elevation of its vineyards. The grapes growing at high elevation, and above the natural fog line, experience much lower daytime temperatures than those on the valley floor, allowing the grapes to stay cool while gaining maximum sun exposure. As a result, growers up on the mountain can afford to harvest later and pick for flavor with less worry about over ripening and excessive alcohol. No grape develops as well in mountain conditions as Cabernet Sauvignon.

Atlas Peak crafts Napa Valley mountain appellation Cabernet Sauvignon from such prestigious areas as Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain District and Mount Veeder, in addition to Atlas Peak. Atlas Peak’s Cabernet Sauvignon wines are driven by an appreciation of mountain-grown fruit and winemaking techniques that capture the distinct flavors derived from the mountain appellations in which they are grown.
