Wine & Spirits rating: 90 points
PRICE ON 10/1/2014: $18.99

Winemaker's Notes:

We carefully handcrafted only 1,100 cases of our 2007 Castle Rock Reserve Petite Sirah, a wine varietal with a history of success in California since the 1880's. The grapes were harvested from vines grown in California's Lake County, an increasingly prestigious Californian appellation. The wine was fermented and then aged for fifteen months in French and American oak barrels. Our Petite Sirah is a dark full-bodied, deeply concentrated wine with full tannins yielding aromas of ripe blueberry, coffee, grain and spice. On the palate it carries layers of ripe cherry, blackberry and plum. Its finish is long, smooth and harmonious with vanilla notes.

Winemaker's Notes:

An exceptional year. Fruit sourced from this 84 yr old dry grown vineyard (planted in 1926) has produced a wine with wonderfully lifted aromatics with red fruits and hints of spice in abundance. Lively and bright on the palate with beautiful sweet red fruit characters, and subtle spicy notes. Great texture, and flavors that linger long, assisted by time in old french barrels. A very sexy wine.
My Notes:

About Fireblock:

This is a new label owned by Bill and Noel Ireland (of Flinders Bay fame). The name refers to the plot of dirt that was planted back in 1926 predominantly to Grenache. It had been previously designated a “fireblock” given its proximity to the railway line, and out of concern that sparks from the steam locomotives could start bushfires!! I managed to persuade Bill and Noel to capture the magic of these old dry grown Grenache and Shiraz vines.

With a continuous history of winemaking dating back to 1852, the stone buildings and wineries of the Clare Valley add to the region's striking and varied beauty. It is a high quality producer of long-lived, intensely flavored and strongly structured table wines, virtually all of which are made in limited quantities.

Lovely deep, dark purple-red. Initial burst of bright cherries, blackberries, and plum followed by a vanilla and coconut finish. Smooth and fruity initial burst. Good mid-palette with a lingering finish. Some minerality in the end. Soft tannins that made this wine a pleasure to drink.

Additional wines from Can Blau:

About Can Blau:

The D.O. Montsant, where Can Blau is located, is a horse shoe shaped appellation that surrounds the D.O. Priorat on three sides. It should have been included on the Priorat appellation but was excluded. Can Blau is composed of 60 acres of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The soils are similar to Priorat with Montsant being a bit more complex with a mixture of slate (llicorella), sandy clay and chalk.

Winemaker's Notes:

Wines from this region are referred to in winemaking circles as "the middle palate of Australia". The red wine from this area is frequently used in small proportions of various multi-regional blends to give middle palate definition. The best wines from the region display a dark color and a rich, ripe bouquet, with the blackberry notes brighter than from Barossa wines, with the tannins quickly developing a velvety character. Although seductive at an early stage, the wines have deceptive cellaring potential.

Additional wines from Evans Wine Company:

About Evans Wine Company:

Named for its founder Len Evans who emigrated to Australia in 1953 and has been a tireless owner, innovator, and promoter of Australian wines. Evans has had his hand in many Australian wineries including Rothbury Estate and Petaluma. Evans Wine Company was founded in 1980 and specializes in wines from the Hunter Valley for the Evans Family Wines label.

Hilltops is in the South-Western Slopes of the Great Dividing Range, situated around the rural towns of Young and Harden in Southern New South Wales. It is about four hours drive south of Sydney and about one and a half hours from Canberra the national capital. An historically important part of Australia, it has an established reputation as a producer of high quality stone fruit. The vineyards are mostly to the South East of Young, which is known as "The Cherry Capital of Australia" and there are about 1,000 acres under vine in the area. The region sits on a large granite rock, which over millions of years has weathered to produce deep topsoil, red coloured as it has mixed with ironstone sand blown in from the Red Centre of Australia.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon expresses characters of ripe dark red and black fruits, layered with notes of earth, spice, chocolate, pipe tobacco and a hint of fresh herb. This rich, complex wine is full-bodied, with concentrated flavor and a satisfying, long finish. Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon is enjoyable on the young side, but should really be aged for a few years to get the most out of it. The wine will continue to develop and should remain in good drinking condition for a decade or more. This wine is best paired with very flavorful foods. One good combination would be with lamb short ribs braised in red wine, beef stock and aromatic vegetables.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Yarden:

About Yarden:

The premier label and flagship brand of Golan Heights Winery. Each year the finest grapes from the best vineyards are reserved for Yarden wines. Yarden is the Hebrew for Jordan River, which bisects the Golan Heights from the Galilee. The label features a symbol of ancient Israel: an oil lamp decorated with mosaic tile.

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of syrah, grenache, cinsault with just a soupçon of mourvèdre and carignane, make for a bright and wonderfully gamey wine. Very youthful with toasty notes of cherry, birch, sassafras and pomegranate. Pair this racey red with a bloomsdale spinach salad with sherry vinaigrette garnished with carpaccio of tuna or beef. Speaking of beef, a rare steak in any number of variations (tri-tip, hanger, New York, filet) would be quite delish. But more exotic fare such as chicken tikka masala or Tandoori lamb chops will alsowork wonderfully well. While the zesty '06 is excellent right now, decanting or aging it for 2-3 more years would be all to the good.

Additional wines from Bonny Doon Vineyard:

About Bonny Doon Vineyard:

Bonny Doon Vineyard is situated in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the tiny hamlet of Bonny Doon. The winery was founded in 1983 by the Grahm family. Randall Grahm, Winemaker and President-for-Life of Bonny Doon Vineyard, was born in Los Angeles in 1953 and attended Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp, excuse me, the prestigious University of California at Santa Cruz, where he was a permanent Liberal Arts major. A complete and insufferable wine fanatic, he returned to the University of California at Davis to complete a degree in viticulture in 1979. Grahm is known as the "Rhone Ranger" for his pioneering work in the popularization of Rhone and Provencal varieties in California. Bonny Doon produces an array of such favorites as: Vin Gris de Cigare (thinking person's pink wine), Le Sophiste (Roussanne/Marsanne melange), Clos de Gilroy (young, fruity Grenache), Le Cigare Volant (Cryptoneuf-du-Pape), Garnacha (the strong Pink Wine), and a dramatically intense Muscat "Vin de Glaciere" (wine of the icebox).

The color is deep red with purple hues. On the nose there are aromas of violets, spice, black pepper and anise aromas together with buttery vanillin oak. On the Palate rich and concentrated flavors with intense fruit character and oak flavors: Fleshy, supple middle- palate with fine grained tannins and a persistent length.

Dark purple. Intense; reminiscent of blackberries and licorice, supported by notes of black pepper. Jammy fruits, such as ripe plum and fig, with a silky texture and a glossy finish.

Pairs well with red meats, hearty pasta dishes and aged cheeses.

Additional wines from Jean-Luc Colombo:

About Jean-Luc Colombo:

A native of Marseilles, Colombo first developed a strong admiration for the wines of the Rhône Valley in the late 1970s as a pharmacy student. A devotee of the Syrah grape, Colombo was convinced that the northern Rhône appellation of Cornas offered enormous and, at the time, unrecognized potential for producing super-quality Syrah wines. After earning degrees in pharmacy and enology, Colombo and his wife Anne, also a pharmacist and enologist, moved to Cornas, fully intending to support themselves as pharmacists while developing a wine consultancy on the side.

It was not long before Colombo began purchasing and cultivating his own vineyards - first in Cornas then throughout the Rhône Valley and Languedoc - leading to the establishment in 1994 of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo. The wines of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo are all sourced from Colombo's own vineyards and from carefully selected domains under his direct consultation.

Colombo has not limited his magical sphere of influence to Cornas. The company now embraces 27 wines representing major appellations of the Rhône Valley as well as the Languedoc and Roussillon regions of southern France. Most recently, Colombo has returned to his roots for his latest winemaking venture in the Côte Bleue district near Marseilles.

About Golan Heights:

Soil. Topography. Climate. These are the three distinct grape-growing conditions for producing quality wines on an international level. In Israel, such optimal conditions exist in the Golan Heights. Everything in this magical strip of land begins with the right conditions - in the Golan, a combination of volcanic basaltic soil, suitable topography and high altitude resulting in cool climate. This is what gives the Golan Heights its second name: "Wine Country." Over the years, the distinctive wines of the Golan Heights Winery have placed Israel on the world wine map. Since its founding in 1983, the Golan Heights Winery has marketed three leading brands: Yarden, Gamla and Golan. The winery has plaed a significant role in nurturing the country's current wine culture, and has altered the way Israeli wines are perceived worldwide.

We like Sion Creek Red with many different foods. Try along with grilled salmon topped with a fresh salsa crude or a crispy thin-crust pizza or a good juicy burger. Sion Creek Red is best enjoyed within a couple of years of the vintage.
