Winemaker's Notes:

Deep red color with a tint of purple. Red berries and "garrigues" aromas, which is the name for those wild bushes such as thyme, laurel and rosemary. Supple and aromatic on the palate with a harmony between the nose and the mouth (sweet spices). Full and lively, this wine is elegant with soft tannins. "Les Garriguettes" reflects this unique Mediterranean terroir.

Winemaker's Notes:

This elegant Rhone blend (our 10th vintage) displays Old World Style with New World fruit. Hint of Grenaches earthy rusticity and Shirazs noble spice with hints of nutmeg and salty black olive on the finish. Balanced with soft integrated tannins.

Serve with roasts, duckling and full flavored Mediterranean dishes as well as lamb or grilled meat and vegetables.

Additional wines from Ken Forrester:

About Ken Forrester:

In 1993, hospitality industry veteran Ken Forrester and his wife Teresa purchased the historic Scholtzenhof estate, nestled at the base of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Originally established in 1689 as Zandberg, the property is one of the oldest wine farms in the Cape. Ken enlisted the help of his winemaker friend Martin Meinert in replanting and revitalizing the vineyards, with an aim to craft a white wine that could rival any in the world! And so it was that Ken Forrester Vineyards was established, with a focus on Chenin Blanc production.

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for this wine are from 4 different cabernet vineyards and our best merlot and cabernet franc vineyards, all at a mix of different elevations. Although all are on the decomposed granite soils typical of the hillsides in Jonkershoek, the soil textures vary quite a lot and that, together with the differences in elevations and clones, gives a variety of different flavor profiles to the grapes.

After 18 months barrel maturation the blend was assembled and put back to barrels for a further 4 months integration. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 22 months barrel maturation.

My Notes:

About Stark-Conde:

I never went to school to study winemaking but rather did my time reading books and experimenting along the way. I'm pretty stubborn, which turns out to be a good thing.

Crafting wine requires patience and the crazy belief that the shortest line drawn between two points may not always be the right one. Take a simple task like fruit-sorting. That's when we meticulously go through all the de-stemmed berries to pick out any under-ripe or bird-damaged fruit, leaves, stems and other MOG (Matter Other than Grapes). During harvest. there comes a point when everyone's exhausted and baskets of grapes keep coming. It's even debatable how much difference sorting will make in the end. That's when the stubborn kicks in.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one having so much fun. We stick to traditional winemaking methods; we ferment our juice in open tanks, do hand-punchdowns around the clock, basket press, and mature the wines in small French oak barrels. The name Stark-Condé is a simple marriage of my wife's family name and my own.

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of varietals and vineyard sites with a variety of soils, clones and rootstocks bring enormous complexity to this wine. On the nose, cassis, dark cherry, plum and blackberry mingle with notes of white pepper, sage, cinnamon, cedar and dark chocolate. Fresh, juicy fruit flavors coat the palate, with sweet spices skirting the edges. A streak of bright acidity lifts the mid palate while fine tannins create weight and a smooth, silky texture. A dazzling, multi-dimensional Napa Valley red.

Blend: 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot

Winemaker's Notes:

The wine was aged in Hungarian oak for 24 months giving it a toasty oak walnut and brown sugar nose, with definite blueberry and boysenberry fruit swirled in. On the palate it is rich and complex with well rounded integrated tannins, bright and intense dark blackberry and blueberry fruit and a long finish with a hint of anise and black pepper.

A big, rich, hearty wine that is meant for food. It will pair well with red meat, lamb and pasta dishes. It is ready to drink now through 2014.

My Notes:

About Shell Creek:

Since 1875 the Sinton (once Sinsheimer) family has been ranching the rolling, oak filled hills and cultivating the valleys of San Luis Obispo County. In 1972, nearly 75 years after acquiring the 5000+ acre Canyon Ranch, we planted our first grape vines and formally started Shell Creek Vineyards. The name of the vineyard comes from a seasonal creek that runs through the property, carrying small pieces of fossilized shells that are found farther upstream on the ranch. Jim started the vineyard with his nephew, Tom Sinton, in order to diversify from the cattle ranch

James and Norma Sinton built their home on the Canyon Ranch in 1940 and were joined by their son, Steve and his wife Jane in 1978. Jane has actively overseen the vineyard for over 30 years. Steve's sisters, Patricia and Gail and their husbands, Hayes and Don (respectively), are also actively involved in the family business. Steve and Jane’s son, Daniel, and his wife, Megan, plan to move to the ranch in 2012 to carry on the family tradtion, while their daughter, Julie and her husband, Brian Pruniski, help with marketing and financial advise from their home in Redwood City.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of red fruit, sweet spice and a touch of fresh mint. It is full and soft with layers of red currant and cassis, note of cigar box, leather and ripe black fruit. The wine finishes with finely grained tannins that add structure and length.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Tilia:

About Tilia:

Named after the Tilia (Linden) tree commonly found throughout Argentina’s wine country, Tilia wines possess true varietal character and embody the rural Mendozean lifestyle. For years vineyard workers have used the flowers of the Tilia to make an herbal tea for enjoyment after a hard day’s work. The name Tilia is chosen in honor of this wine country tradition.

The Tilia wines are made at Bodegas Esmeralda, a Catena family winery in the Eastern region of Mendoza that is dedicated to making value wines for the Argentine domestic market. Tilia wines offer a unique combination of fruit sourced from the traditional Eastern region and the dynamic Southern region of Mendoza. The Eastern region of Mendoza enjoys warm, sunny days and cool desert nights. The grapes have very ripe, rich fruit flavors and excellent mid-palate depth and concentration. Bright sunshine and low temperatures of the Southern region lend a cool freshness. The fruit from this area shows clean acid balance and soft, supple tannins.

Tilia is dedicated to responsible use of the environment. The winemaking and viticultural team actively engage in many practices and programs throughout the community to implement sustainability. Water conservation and reuse, minimal use of pesticides and organic fertilization are several examples of the team’s dedication. Furthermore, the entire Tilia viticultural team attends regular sustainability training sessions at the National University of Cuyo and National Agricultural Research Institute. They take this training into the field to share and implement with their grower partners.

Great with grilled meats, pasta with red sauce and red meats.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Fincas Don Martino:

About Fincas Don Martino:

Fincas Don Martino is a creation of famed agronomist Mauricio Parodi and Buenos Aires Businessman Hugo Martino. The project began in 2002 when Parodi fell in love with the quality of fruit from "Viña Violeta", a small 18.5 acre vineyard in Agrelo, a sub-district within the Luján de Cuyo appellation of Mendoza. The vines, planted in 1926, are ungrafted Malbec clones originally brought to Argentina from France. The vineyard's high elevation (3,850 feet) allows the grapes to develop tremendous complexity via an extended growing season and large daily temperature fluctuations.

In addition to the two Malbec wines they produce out of the "Vina Violeta" site, the winery has recently begun producing small quantities of old vine Semillon from a heritage vineyard in Perdriel. As production is limited by the small size of these two vineyards, each of these wines have become "cult" items in their native Mendoza. All are produced organically and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Displays deep red color with an attractive nose that recalls plums and strawberry aromas mingled with roasted pepper notes and toasty hints of integrated oak. In the mouth, it displays a vibrant composition of fresh fruit and sweet spices. In order to protect the purity of the fruit, this wine was subject to minimal handling prior to bottling.

Blend: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 7% Carmenere, 4% Syrah, 1% Petit Verdot

My Notes:

About Vina Pargua:

Pargua winemaker Jean Pascal Lacaze believes that wine is only as good as the grapes from which it is made. At his Maipo Valley vineyard, Lacaze grows grapes sustainably and organically, uses the best fruit, ages the wine in individually selected barrels, and blends the juice at just the right time.

The label artwork was created by renowned Chilean artist Benjamin Lira, who took his inspiration from the word Pargua, meaning "full moon" in the Mapuche language. Like the artwork, which will change with every vintage, Pargua’s wines are vibrant, expressive, and harmonious.

Additional wines from Martin Ray:

About Martin Ray:

Courtney Benham acquired the historic Martini & Prati winery in July 2003, which is now Martin Ray Winery and the home of their new Tasting Room. The Tasting Room structure, dating back to the 1900's, used to serve as a stable and bunkhouse where Italian immigrants stayed during harvest and crush. The winery also houses a 1 million gallon production facility that is used not only for wine production, but also as a 'custom crush' facility where over 20 clients crush their grapes and produce their wine.

Established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery, the historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. The winery was able to stay in operation during prohibition by selling sacramental wines by train to Rabbis through a winery in New York. Originally known as Martini & Prati, which was established in 1902, the winery was run by five generations of the Martini family and associated with the local Italian-American community that still includes the Sebastiani's, the Foppiano's, the Pedroncelli's and the Seghesio's.
