Winemaker's Notes:

Brilliant ruby red with purple hues, this wine has intense aromas of red cherries, violets and currants, followed by a hint of spice. Wellstructured and balanced on the palate, Rubio is easygoing and versatile, but also notable for its intensity and elegance. Try it with antipasti or tapas, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, or grilled sausages—a perfect bytheglass selection.

Additional wines from Poggio San Polo:

About Poggio San Polo:

The vineyards at San Polo were planted between 1990 and 2000 with the goal of making the highest quality Brunello di Montalcino. With an altitude of 1350 feet above sea level, their southern facing vineyard receives optimal sun exposure and is the highest in Montalcino. The vineyard also has natural terraces facing the stunning Sant’ Antimo Valley and is entirely dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino.

In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini and Leonardo Locascio purchased the property, and with together with winemaker Nicola Biasi adhere to meticulous vineyard management, including environmentally sound and sustainable agriculture, and extremely low-yield crop management (approximately 2 tons per acre). The vines are traditionally trained according to the spurred cordon method, with south/south-east exposure. After being harvested, the grapes receive a long maceration in stainless steel at controlled temperatures (82-86° F) and are then immediately transferred to French barriques (10 months for the Rosso, 18 months for the Mezzopane, and 24 months for the Brunello).

Our Pinot Noirs are known for their rich flavors and brilliant varietal characteristics. The 2010 is supple and rich with flavors of red berries, warm spice, earth, and chocolate, along with mineral characteristics that are reflections of this cool climate region. International Wine Cellar rating: 90 points
PRICE ON 7/29/2014: $10.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Twelve years after the start of El Seque, owner Juan Carlos has mastered the way to clearly reflect the freshness and concentrated balsamic characters produced in his seasoned and mature Monastrell fruit, making wines of great character and balance.

Deep red and purple in color, this wine has aromas of ripe fruit and Mediterranean forest floor. On the palate the wine is voluminous, smooth and full of mature tannins. Mediterranean in character, with hints of mint and aromatic herbs, the wine has a remarkable freshness and very long finish.

80% Monastrell, 10% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

My Notes:

About El Seque:

Committed to the quest of producing unique wines with identity, winemaker and owner Juan Carlos López de la Calle believes old vines are the key to accomplishing this complex pursuit. After having achieved success in Rioja and Navarra, Juan Carlos went to Alicante for the extreme climatic conditions, disparate soil types and, above all, for the old-vine Monastrell indigenous to the region.

Deep ruby colored with a gorgeous nose. Attractive aromas of kirsch, raspberries, pepper and melted liquorice. Full flavored wine with a supple texture and no hard edges. Medium to full bodied, fruit driven sumptuously-textured and long aftertaste.

Pair with various roast dishes, Spanish stew, mushrooms and grilled meats. Also, blue fish, rice, short- and medium-cured cheeses.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

About Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

Las Rocas de San Alejandro is located in the region of Calatayud, about 150 miles northeast of Madrid, and is centered around the rivers of Jiloca and Jalon. Although there are still few wineries in the zone, the ones which are beginning to show with their wines why this region is so special.

Although the D.O. is quite young, vines have been grown in the zone for some time. About one eighth of the vineyard land’s production has been bottled at one of Spain’s best and most progressive cooperatives, San Alejandro. With an abundance of amazing raw material, Eric Solomon was able to commission several bottlings of very old vine fruit into what has become one of the most sought-after estates in the portfolio. Calatayud benefits from a continental climate with vast temperature differences between night and day. Harvests are much later than in other parts of Aragon, and the acidity/maturity/alcohol ratios tend to be more balanced.

As most of the vineyards lie on what was (thousands of years ago) an old river basin, the soil is comprised of brown limestone and loam over slate and gypsum. This particular soil is also ideal for production of olives, cherries, and other fruits. Jean-Marc Lafage (of Domaine Lafage in France’s Roussillon) is responsible for the Las Rocas cuvees.

Brilliant deep ruby red color, fruity aromas . Montebuena Red has a spicy vanilla bouquet and is smooth and fruity in the mouth with some well-integrated secondary nuances, full-flavored and a persistent pleasant finish. Produced from 100% Tempranillo grapes, which are hand harvested from the Montebuena vineyard.
My Notes:

About Montebuena:

Montebuena is produced by Bodegas Burgo Viejo that were founded in 1987 by six families of farmers. Burgo Viejo's main asset has always been the exquisite winemaking process of grapes collected from its own vineyards throughout the years, back to the times when they were just a wine cellar selling in bulk (they started as a cooperative in the 1950's). Young Gorka Etxebarria is the leading winemaker and has been working with Burgo Viejo since December 2003.

Delicious with duck breast, lamb chops, wild mushroom risotto, roast chicken or grilled salmon. Try Manchego or Fontina for the cheese course. Seasoning affinities include dried citrus peel and berries along with shaved fennel.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Terrabianca:

About Terrabianca:

The first document to mention Terrabianca is dated 1085: two centuries before Dante. Located just over 35 miles from Florence towards Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico, its gently rolling country is much the same as it was in the Middle Ages. The Guldeners have 'only' been here since 1987; although in this relatively short period of time, they have propelled the estate to the highest quality levels, entirely restoring the seventeenth-century homestead, constructing a brand new winery, and restructuring the Terrabianca range.

In 1997, the couple purchased a second property, some 44 miles southwest of the original Terrabianca nucleus: Il Tesoro di Terrabianca ("Treasure of Terrabianca"). Its 262 acres bring the Guldeners' total acreage to 334, and are a mere 6 miles from the sea, in Maremma - the new frontier of Tuscan viniculture. This recent acquisition focuses on the olive oils (from over 4,000 Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino olive trees, many of which some 300 years old!) and Sangiovese grapes that go into a youthful and appealing 100% varietal, La Fonte. Packaging and label for this wine (see photo) have been kept distinct from the rest of the line, although the product itself is also styled by Vittorio Fiore, Terrabianca wine-maker from day one.

2010 Ghost Pines Red Blend has a dark purple color that alludes to the intense blueberry, licorice and cracked pepper aromas that are framed by hints of toast and cocoa powder. Flavors of syrupy black cherry, blackberry and blueberry and brown spice meld with velvety tannins, creating a rich mouthfeel and a long, plush finish.

Blend: 42% Petite Sirah, 28% Zinfandel, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 1% Syrah

Serve at with roast red meats, stews, stilton & Camembert cheese.

Deep, powerful wine redolent of tar, violets, licorice, and black cherries, all of which come together on a powerful, focused frame. About Samsara:

Samsara is a Sanskrit word meaning the eternal cycle of life. The world we live in now. One of passion, oneness and harmony. This idea is key to the philosophy of Chad and Mary Melville's Samsara wines. Chad and Mary produce limited releases of Pinot Noir and Syrah from micro-sites within carefully selected vineyards.
