Winemaker's Notes:

Deep and dark red. Shiny. Fresh fruits with red berries and spices on the nose. The palate is full, round and racy. Rounded and smooth tannins. A full-bodied, rich and intensly aromatic wine. Overall, full with a long finish and plenty of elegance and finesse due to the well balanced tannins and fruit.

This classic wine offers top quality year in year out.

My Notes:

Additional wines from E. Guigal:

About E. Guigal:

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. In these vineyards that are over 2400 years old, you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine for over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment.

Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 when the latter was victim to a brutal illness rendering him blind. Marcel's hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis Grippat estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage, as well as the Domaine de Vallouit in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.

In the cellars of the Guigal estate in Ampuis, the northern appellations of the Rhône Valley are produced and aged. These are the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The great appellations of the Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Côtes-du-Rhône, are also aged in the Ampuis cellars.

What you have here is a pure, unapologetic expression of California Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from the hit list of premiere California wine regions - it's a Show stopper. Aromas of cassis, toasty oak, sweet fruit and chocolate continue into a chewy palate and long finish.

Additional wines from Chateau de Beaucastel:

About Chateau de Beaucastel:

In 1549, "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its land holdings, containing 25 saumées at Coudoulet". More than four centuries later, this remarkable domaine, known today as Château de Beaucastel, is producing what most people acknowledge to be the finest wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

In 1903, a young chemical engineer and mathematics professor named Pierre Perrin, together with his father-in-law, began to restore the domaine following the ravages of phylloxera. His son, Jacques Perrin, took over the domaine in 1953 and introduced many innovations such as improved grape varietals, integrated pest control, and a flash-heat exchanger.

Today, the third and fourth generations of Perrins, François and Jean-Pierre and Jean-Pierre's sons Pierre, Marc and Thomas, continue in the tradition of their father and grandfather. The vineyards of Beaucastel are treated as a garden: no chemical fertilizer, no chemical week killers or sprays are permitted. Organic fertilizer comes from compost and only a minimum of traditional sulphur-copper spray is used in the vineyards.

The vineyards are planted in all the traditional grapes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, Vaccarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardin, Bourboulenc, Roussanne.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep purplish ruby-red in colour, our Carmenère Single Vineyard opens with aromas of sweet spice and chocolate that lead the way to black fruits that meld with the variety's characteristic black pepper notes. Exuberant and intense flavours reveal excellent typicity on the palate with a touch of roasted red pepper, soy sauce, cinnamon, and blackberries complemented by a touch of tobacco and pencil lead. The palate displays very sweet, soft, and ripe tannins with firm acidity that refreshes and guarantees a long life in the bottle.

A deep crimson red, The Scribbler 2009 shows excellent concentration and lift on the nose, with redcurrant fruits, spices and licorice complementing fresh floral aromatics of herbs and mints. This is a densely weighted wine with blackcurrant fruit and dark berries. The Shiraz is again nicely layered within a tightly integrated and beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon palate. Perfect to drink now, but will certainly cellar well over the next five to 10 years.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Cabernet was sourced from five vineyards in the McLaren Vale district. The major percentage is from our McLaren Flat vineyard together with that of our immediate neighbor. These vineyards, located at the northern part of the foothills, ripen later than many of the other subregions resulting in "cooler climate" aromatic dark fruit driven wines with intense mid to back palate presence and an abundance of soft velvety tannins. The balance of the blend is sourced from vineyards in the Seaview, Willunga and Aldinga regions of McLaren Vale. These vineyards are located in sites where the influence of strong soils gives rise to intense aromas and flavors.

Aromas of dark berries combine with hints of earthy richness. The palate is full of rich dark savory fruit leaving trails of dark chocolate, cherries and sweet chalky tannins.

My Notes:

About Kangarilla Road Vineyard & Winery:

Before creating the Kangarilla Road vineyard and winery, Kevin O'Brien was a winemaker educated at the highly regarded Roseworthy College in Adelaide. He spent 12 years in the wine industry managing wine companies, as well as two years as the international manager of the Australian Wine Export Council. Today, Kangarilla Road's reds display rich varietal character with finesse, structure and balance not always exhibitied by wines from McLaren Vale. Aside from the winery's Shiraz and cabernet, it can boast of one of the few successful zinfandel plantings in Australia.

Kangarilla Road is a fairly new brand on the Australian wine scene, but the grapes come from vines planted in the 1970's. For several years prior to 1997, Kevin and Helen O'Brien had been seeking a high quality McLaren Vale vineyard to purchase. When they were lucky enough to find the old-vine Cambrai vineyard, they jumped at the chance to purchase it. The winery's first complete vintage as Kangarilla Road was in 1998.
