charitable wine

PRICE ON 7/30/2014: $13.79

Winemaker's Notes:

ONEHOPE California Zinfandel, created in partnership with Rob Mondavi Jr., starts with the foundation of an all-American grape, then custom blended with Syrah from select vineyards throughout Napa, Sonoma and the Central Coast of California. ONEHOPE Zinfandel is a rich red color with loads of juicy dark fruit flavors including plum and black cherry, with hints of pepper and a spicy finish. This delicious wine is versatile and pairs well with dishes such as pizza, barbeque ribs and lamb.

ONEHOPE donates half of pro?ts from the sale of every bottle of Zinfandel to Team Rubicon, an organization that allows veterans the change to use their advanced skills and training to assist in natural disaster relief. 92% of recently returned veterans state that they would like to continue their service in some way, but don't know how. Team Rubicon gives vets an opportunity to stay involved in their communities while signi?cantly aiding in natural disaster relief

PRICE ON 7/30/2014: $7.99

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose of this rich Cabernet-Shiraz blend announces the presence of classic Barossa Shiraz, with notes of blackberry, blueberry and cassis and a hint of dried sage. Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly present in the structure and complexity of this dense, full-bodied wine. Moderate oak doesn't detract from, but rather complements, the intense fruit flavors. This Cabernet-Shiraz is enjoyable now but will continue to develop in the bottle for several years. Pair this wine with hearty fare such as charcoal-grilled steak, roast leg of lamb with white bean puree and pasta with rich red sauce.

Blend: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Shiraz

My Notes:

About Archetype:

Archetype wines are made from exceptional vineyards in the Barossa – Australia's renowned winegrowing region. The wines are produced at Chateau Yaldara, a landmark winery in the heart of the Barossa that was originally founded in1867, then re-built in 1965, by the joint winemaking team of Napa Valley's Bob Masyczek and Australia's Thomas Jung.

Located just north of Adelaide in Sotheast Australia, the Barossa is a popular tourist destination. It was discovered a century and a half ago by German and English settlers as having excellent soil and climate conditions for growing wine grapes.

World-renowned for its big, blockbuster Shiraz wines, the Barossa is Australia's equivalent of the Napa Valley in terms of prestige and name recognition. It is also home to some of the highest-rated Australian wineries including Henshke, Penfolds, and Yalumba. A small area about the size of Napa Valley, its major towns are Lyndoch and Tanunda.

Winemaker's Notes:

Opaque deep red with an alluring crimson edge, our 2006 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon doesn't hesitate to offer big fruit-forward aromas of blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, and plum accented with clove, vanilla, roasted coffee, and a lifted note of cedar. This wine stays rich and big on the palate. The round, full midpalate leads to a finish that offers ripe, youthful tannins evoking dark chocolate.

This wine, which promises to age well for decades to come, is wonderfully expressive with food. We recommend Greek lamb moussaka, wild game, barbecued prime rib, and beef short ribs.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Simi:

About Simi:

In 1876, brothers Giuseppe and Pietro Simi began making wine in San Francisco from Sonoma County grapes and eventually planted vineyards near Healdsburg. Simi's historic stone cellars were built in 1890 and are still used to age the wines. Today, Simi is recognized as a leader in innovation and experimentation with a history of over 125 years of cutting-edge winemaking.

Their Alexander Valley vineyards possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region. Years of geologic activity – from an ancient mudflow to the meandering Russian River and Mayacama Creek – has created numerous distinct soil types and a range of microclimates. Here they grow the red Bordeaux varietals for their Reserve Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for their Sendal.

Their Russian River Goldfields vineyard is planted to field selections chosen from the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California. The combination of diverse clones and the cool, Russian River Valley climate produce Simi’s distinct Reserve Chardonnay.

Simi's winemakers focus on site-specific winemaking and use the most modern advances in vineyard management, fermentation and blending to best express the personality and flavors of each vineyard site.

Winemaker's Notes:

Showing great delicacy and restraint, the nose reveals spicy green apple with minerally slate, lemon rind notes and a nuance of citrus blossom. Firm, natural acidity carries the length of the palate and is adequately balanced by vibrant citrus flavors with a spicy edge. Long, lingering citrus flavors present now will evolve into toasty, honeyed characters over time.

About Yealands:

Stretching over 2,400 acres of prime viticultural land, the Yealands Estate is New Zealand's single largest vineyard under private ownership. Located in the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, the Seaview Vineyad is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in the country: low rainfall, high sunshine, cool nights and strong winds. The result is a smaller, thicker-skinned berry and lower yielding vines which create wines of intensity, purity and complexity.

The hallmark of the Yealands Estate is an absolute commitment to sustainable wine production, an undertaking we have made from the vine to the bottle. This commitment to premium sustainable wine production has resulted in a number of notable achievements.

The Yealands Estate Winery was created to operate sustainably at every level.

As a result we have already achieved a high industrial sustainability rating. We have also been awarded carboNZeroCert™ status, joining a select group of wineries around the world who have earned this recognition.

Aromas of cherries, dark berries and cedar jump from the glass of this rich, full-bodied and smooth Cabernet. Cassis and cocoa powder fill the palate, with a medium dry finish and fine tannins to assure this wine's ability to age well for the next 7-10 years.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Atalon:

About Atalon:

The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark.

The famed Howell Mountain property was acquired by the Jackson family in 1996 and renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic ghost winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley frontier.

In 1997, Atalon was created to revive the vineyard's past accomplishments and to build on the area's reputation for producing remarkable red wines. Although inspired by ghosts long gone, Atalon wines reflect a modern understanding of farming Napa's rugged mountains and valleys for the most balanced and expressive wines.

Drawing fruit from selected vineyards, the wines are a composite of vineyards stretching from the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros in the south to the peaks of Howell Mountain in the north. Atalon is dedicated to the true essence and flavor of the Napa Valley, a distinction defined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Winemaker's Notes:

My goal with the Columbia Valley Chardonnay is to make it a pleasurable, food-friendly Chardonnay. This is a fresh, soft style of Chardonnay with bright sweet citrus fruit character and subtle spice and oak nuances. We blend Chardonnay grapes from vineyards all over Washington's Columbia Valley to make this a complex, interesting wine. The sur lie aging gives it an appealing softness.

Pair with crab, poultry, salmon and scallops.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Chateau Ste. Michelle:

About Chateau Ste. Michelle:

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery combines Old World winemaking with New World innovation and is best known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau Ste. Michelle receives some of the highest accolades in the industry, including "American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast for 2004 and "2005 Winery of the Year" by Restaurant Wine. In addition, the winery's Eroica Riesling, crafted from a partnership with German winemaker Ernst Loosen, has been named to Wine Spectator's prestigious "Top 100" wines list for five consecutive years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the few premium wineries in the world with two state-of-the-art wineries, one devoted to whites and another to reds. This dedicated approach to winemaking allows winemaker Bob Bertheau to build winemaking programs to the unique specifications of red and white wines. While all of Chateau Ste. Michelle's vineyards are located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains where the climate is dry and sunny, Bob Bertheau makes the award winning white wines in Woodinville, 15 miles northeast of Seattle. The winery's expansive, 87-acre estate hosts more than 250,000 visitors annually for tours, tastings, dinners and outdoor summer concerts.

Winemaker's Notes:

This unique vineyard in Sonoma Valley is an extension of the Oak Hill Organic Farm, owned and operated for many years by the now deceased Otto Teller, a sage octogenarian who employed no pesticides or irrigation. The 110-year-old vines are situated on a gravelly, well-drained hill that receive a full share of summer sun as well as cooling breezes. The crop level is seldom higher than one and a half tons per acre, and this scant tonnage - combined with the ideal growing conditions - produces exceptionally intense, spicy fruit.

A longtime favorite among hard-core Ravenswood fans, the Old Hill vineyard was planted in the 1880`s in the Valley of the Moon, just north of the town of Sonoma. This vineyard is like your most comfortable pair of old shoes - unparalleled. It is wonderfully consistent, from year to year, in its ability to please even the most discriminating palate.

Old Hill Zinfandel is Knockout nose combines sappy black fruits, black pepper and spicy, smoked meats; rather Rhone-like. Silky and sweet in the middle but with terrific flavor definition and cut. This has compellingly intense fruit and a very long, juicy, aromatic aftertaste. Would appear to be an outstanding vintage for this consistently excellent zinfandel bottling.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Ravenswood:

About Ravenswood:

Fueled initially by the inspiration and winemaking skills of Joel Peterson, aided and abetted by his business partner W. Reed Foster, Ravenswood winery has been dedicated to top quality, hand-crafted wine since the first crush in 1976. Every Ravenswood wine carries a unique vintage and vineyard identity in addition to the intense powerful – gothic – character with which the winery has come to be associated.

A key to Ravenswood’s success is our long-standing relationships with over 60 independent grape growers. Vineyards are chosen for their location, age, yield and special flavor characteristics. At Ravenswood, we are devoted to working with growers who share our philosophy about high quality.

Ravenswood Vineyard Designate wines are made employing what winemaker Joel Peterson refers to as “stubborn and impractical” Old World enological practices. Wines are fermented in small wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and punched down by hand three to five times per day. The wines are characterized by intense, spicy aromas supported by rich, berry flavors and long, clean finishes.

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine opens with the scent of sweet spices. Anise, nutmeg and allspice are framed around red cherry aromas. Firm and focused ?avors of dark plum and cherry broaden across the back-palate to an expansive density of fruit.

The FAY vineyard is the land where the story of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars began back in 1969 when Warren Winiarski tasted Nathan Fay's 1968 homemade Cabernet. Warren knew, instantly, that he had found what he was searching for—classic elements of fruit and structure, suppleness and balance. It was a style that Warren refers to as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." As luck would have it, an adjoining prune orchard was for sale. The Winiarski's purchased the land and planted a vineyard—now known as S.L.V. — and soon after, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was born.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars:

About Stag's Leap Wine Cellars:

Considered one of the "first growths" of Napa Valley, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars produces renowned Cabernet Sauvignon from its historic Stags Leap District estate vineyards. Founded in 1970, the winery brought international recognition to California winemaking and the Napa Valley when the 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won the now famout 1976 Paris Tasting, also known as the "Judgement of Paris." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' three estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V. and Fay - are among the most highly regarded and collected Cabernet Sauvignons worldwide. The wines are fashioned to express richness balanced by elegant restraint, an approach often described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove."
