Additional wines from Castello di Querceto:

About Castello di Querceto:

The François family, which settled in Tuscany in the 18th century, has owned the Castello di Querceto estate since 1897. Of French origin, the family has produced such illustrious personalities as Giuseppe François, a noted mathematician, and Alessandro, an expert on archaeology and the discoverer of important Etruscan works like the celebrated François Vase, which is now preserved in the Archaeological Museum in Florence. Castello di Querceto and the land surrounding it are fascinating places steeped in history. In the past, the castle, erected as a lookout point on the Via Cassia Imperiale, one of the principal arteries of the Roman period, helped to defend the immediate area. Today, encircled by the green of the forests and the hills, it seems as if it had been constructed purposely to protect the invaluable heritage of its vineyards and olive orchards. Vines and olives grow on both sides of the valley of the Dudda, from the Sugame Pass and, beyond Dudda, toward Lucolena and Mount San Michele, which reaches a height of 400 to 500 meters (1,312-1,640 feet).

PRICE ON 12/18/2014: $11.99

ratings pedigree (past vintages):
2008 Wine Enthusiast rating: 90 points

Winemaker's Notes:

True to the Trenza mission, this vintage is a blend of Iberian varietals: Syrah, Grenache (Garnacha), and Albariño, from both the warm Paso Robles and cool Edna Valley regions in SLO County. Each block was farmed specifically to make this Rosado, with the aim to shade the fruit, and was picked at lower brix levels. The lower sunlight on the clusters helps to pump up bright fruit flavors and preserves acidity. The color was carefully chosen to show the fresh yet rich flavors of this vibrant rosé.

This wine has a very similar aroma and flavor profile. There is bright strawberry and cherry, along with rich banana, and a hint of rose petals. It finishes nice and surprisingly dry. It is a true rosé – one that was grown, picked, and fermented for the sole purpose of making this style of wine.

My Notes:

About Trenza:

Trenza, Spanish for braid, is a winery dedicated to the production of Spanish-inspired New World blends that showcase the viticultural diversity of San Luis Obispo County.

The color is a deep and rich ruby-garnet. With integrated spicy sweet oak, there are layers of flavor composed of black cherry, black currant, plum, mincemeat, juniper berry, mushroom, vanilla and dark chocolate, with an underlining complexity of leather and tobacco. The entry and finish are very smooth with integrated fruit resembling black cherry and a rich dark currant syrup. With an extended length of flavor that is very pleasant, this wine is very inviting... you can't stop with just one glass!

Blend: 79.3% Merlot, 8.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4.4% Petit Verdot, 3.3% Malbec, 2.6% Petite Sirah, 1.8% Cabernet Franc.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Freemark Abbey:

About Freemark Abbey:

The history of Freemark Abbey began in 1886, when Josephine Marlin Tychson became the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The historic site where Josephine's winery, Tychson Cellars, once stood is now known as Freemark Abbey.

Josephine, a native of San Lorenzo, California and her husband, John Tychson, a Danish immigrant, moved to St. Helena in 1881. For $8,500, they purchased 147 acres north of St. Helena, which later became known as "Tychson Hill".

Shortly after her husband's untimely death, Josephine began construction of a fifty square foot redwood winery which would grow to hold a capacity of about 30,000 gallons. In addition, she hired Nils Larsen, an experienced vintner, as her foreman. Josephine successfully produced wine for the next eight years and then sold the winery to Larsen in 1894. In turn, Larsen leased the winery to Antonio Forni, a good friend of Josephine's. Forni later purchased the property in 1898. Forni is responsible for building a new winery on the old site of the Tychson structure.

In the years that followed, Freemark Abbey went through a period of several different owners until 1966, when a group of partners purchased the winery. In 1993, Winemaker Ted Edwards became a partner. Edwards assumed the role of managing partner in addition to maintaining the responsibilities he has held as winemaker since 1985.

Winemaker's Notes:

Well, at least this year we weren't "burning down da House," but it was an unusually long and cool season that led to berries with low yields and great concentration again. This Big House Red lives up to that old Fruit Bomb moniker that you've come to expect.

It starts with a nose full of blackberries and raspberries, with hints of leather and spices. The palate is clean, exhibiting flavors of cranberries, roses and a touch of rhubarb. This finish lingers, with flavors of vanilla and a touch of dark cherries in the finish.

A true trump card, Big House Red pairs well with all grilled meats, lasagna Bolognese, grilled vegetables or even sashimi grade Ahi tuna.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Big House:

About Big House:

The Big House wines were born of the notion that the California climate is quite hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy and Spain. Big House has found that by blending, rather than relying upon a single variety, they can create far more complex, rich wines that elegantly match a very wide variety of cuisine, from pizza, to BBQ ribs to roast chicken.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Columbia Valley grapes that we choose for the Sweet Riesling are picked earlier (at about 20-21 Brix) than the grapes for the Dry Riesling. We use mostly native yeast and ferment at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Like our Dry Riesling, there is no use of oak barrels or malolactic fermentation. We stop the fermentation at about 7% residual sugar, and we clean the wine rapidly to retain as much freshness and fruitiness as possible. We leave a fair amount of carbon dioxide in the wine to create a lively feeling to the wine – although it's not spritzy. The resulting wine is moderately sweet and refreshingly low in alcohol with flavors of pineapple and peach. Our Sweet Riesling brings perfect balance to all fiery fare – especially Thai, Szechwan, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Caribbean cuisine…or simply enjoy as an aperitif.

The juice is then cold temperature fermented over 20 days. We do not use any oak and do not put the wine through malolactic fermentation.

The wine is crisp with a slight residual sugar of 1.7% with flavors of lychee, melon and tangerine. Our Gewurztraminer is an exceptional match with spicy Indian food, lemon chicken and blue cheeses.
