Winemaker's Notes:

Bridlewood Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon displays classic Cabernet dark fruit flavors of blackberry and chocolate with hints of Pomegranates, caramelized sugar and molasses.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Bridlewood Winery:

About Bridlewood Winery:

Bridlewood joins a long and rich tradition of winemaking in Santa Barbara County. It wasn't until the 1960's and 1970's, when new breed of pioneering winemakers, including Dan Gehrs, started making wine in the broad area called the Central Coast, that a southern California winemaking renaissance occurred. Although the winery's capacity is 50,000 cases, releases for the first few years will be 10-15,000 cases. Growth will be consistent with the winery's philosophy of producing many small lots of high quality wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

Apothic Red is bold and enchanting, as it captures the dark fruit characteristics of Syrah and Zinfandel. These jammy flavors blend well with the elegant blackberry and black cherry characteristics of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The wine is further enhanced by undertones of mocha and vanilla.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Apothic:

About Apothic:

More than 800 years ago, vintners blended and stored their most coveted concoctions in a mysterious place called Apotheca. In late 2005, a Master Winemaker envisioned an epic red wine combining Old World traditions of blending while realizing a markedly New World style. Thus began the path that led his protégé, winemaker Boyd Morrison, to select grapes from California's bountiful vineyards for this new blended red. Morrison was inspired to blend spicy Zinfandel, with smooth Merlot and lush, dark Syrah to create Apothic Red.

Divining Rod Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
(search item no. 116938)

PRICE ON 4/21/2014: $15.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Aromas of ripe black fruits. Blackberry character up front with luscious fruit notes develop into spicy black cherry and hints of cured meats and black tea.

New French oak, in medium and medium-plus toast, provides a pleasant mouth feel, texture and weight giving the right amount of influence to envelop the wine in a fitting tannic structure while preserving the integrity and brightness of the Alexander Valley fruit.

My Notes:

About Divining Rod by Marc Mondavi:

My Notes:

Additional wines from Marques de Grinon:

About Marques de Grinon:

Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova, Marquis of Griñon, has pioneered the modernization of vine growing and winemaking in Spain. He is a grandee of Spain and Vice President of the Spanish Gastronomical Academy and President of the Castilla La Mancha chapter. In 1974, he introduced Spain to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties. This was but the first step in a series of daring pioneering innovations by the man responsible for the great wines of Marques de Grinon. Years ago Carlos Falcó Fernandez planted a high canopy management vineyard with drip irrigation, advised by Richard Smart. With direction from Emile Peynaud and Michel Rolland, a partial root drying system was devised for planting Syrah and Petit Verdot, and launching the collection of grapes at night which here-to-fore was unheard of in Spain. These innovations contribute to the production of the complex fruit driven wines of Marqués de Griñón.

Located in Malpica de Tajo, 50 kilometers from Toledo, the vineyards cover a surface area of 50 hectares in the historic Dominio of Valdepusa (family owned since 1292). Currently, 42 of these hectares are used to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Syrah varieties using a mixed system that allows for the use of the most advanced technology, canopy management. This was the first vineyard in Spain where the technique was implemented.

Winemaker's Notes:

With beautifully married flavors and tannins, our Oberon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 18 months oak aging, further concentrated the wine's vibrant red cherry, candied blackberry, licorice and spice flavors, adding a hint of cocoa powder and a lingering toffee note on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Oberon:

About Oberon:

As a third-generation winemaker and Napa Valley native, Rob Mondavi, Jr. has always understood that the region is uniquely suited for growing classic Bordeaux varieties. With the Oberon label - originally named for the eponymous king in Shakespeare's winsome comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream — he has created high-quality Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc to be enjoyed every day.

Rob and fellow winemaker, Tony Coltrin, select Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from some of Napa Valley's finest vineyards in Oakville, Rutherford, Stags Leap and other emerging sub-appellations. The climate of these regions — warm days and cool evenings — yields grapes with the perfect balance of ripe fruit flavors and natural acidity.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Phoenix name recognizes the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Tolley in South Australia in 1888, the 'The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company.' The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Penley Estate:

About Penley Estate:

Established in 1988, by Kym Tolley, a direct descendant of the famous Penfold and Tolley winemaking families – the name Penley is an amalgam of the first three and last three letters from each title.

Tolley has over 25 years of winemaking experience, including being involved in the making of many vintages of the famous Penfolds Grange. The estate is located in the heart of Coonawarra, with the vines planted in the famed "terra rossa" soils – bright red top-soils overlaying soft free-draining limestone.

Critically acclaimed as one of Coonawarra's leading estates, and voted as one of the International Wineries of the Year 2001 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, while the Reserve Cabernet voted best wine of Coonawarra 2001, as judged by winemaking peers and critics.

The Penley Estate signature style comprises distinct, precise, terrior driven wines – not overly oaked or excessively alcoholic. They display ripe clean fruit with true regional character – the senior wines will age for many years.

Over the years, the winery has remained committed to delivery handcrafted, small-lot wines, as well as affordable, superior quality everyday wines. In 2009, the winery reached a milestone when Wine Spectator named their 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Year," the first time a wine from Washington state has received the ranking. This accolade was not only a historic moment for Columbia Crest, but for all wineries in Washington and reinforced the belief that the region is among the best wine-producing areas in the world.
