Winemaker's Notes:

Scharffenberger Rosé is made by the traditional méthode champenoise process, whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. Most of the base wines underwent malolactic fermentation, which softens and rounds out the blend. The grapes are sourced from our vineyards in the Anderson Valley as well as other premium quality vineyards in Mendocino County with whom we have long term contracts. This type of vineyard selection allows us to choose from the best vineyards in the area, which enables us to produce our trademark cuvée.

The wine has a pale salmon hue with integrated aromas of fresh raspberry jam and wild strawberries on a cream covered pastry base. The flavors are layered, round, fresh, fruity and long.

My Notes:

About Ruffino:

In 1877, Illario and Leopoldo Ruffino laid the foundations of their dream to make the most known and loved Italian wines in the world from the heart of Tuscany. At their winery in Pontassieve, just outside of Florence, they began producing wines according to a strict quality standard and a rigorous technical research. Soon, Ruffino became an international symbol of the Chianti region, and won numerous awards, including the prestigious gold medal at the Bordeaux Wine Fair in 1895, affirming the quality of its wine.

In 1913, the Folonari family purchased Ruffino and brought new talent, energy and enthusiasm into the company. They started on a nearly century-long pursuit to develop a collection of estates in Tuscany, all of which matched the standard of quality and uniqueness which was the trademark of Ruffino wine.

Over the last sixty years, Ruffino has established seven prominent estates in Tuscany, all situated within the major DOCG production regions including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Today, Ruffino continues to meld century-long Tuscan traditions with new state-of-the-art cellar technology and modern winemaking for an ideal symbiosis with the energy of the contemporary Italian lifestyle.

A zesty upfront wine crafted in true New World style. Passionfruit, gooseberry, litchi and asparagus aromas follow through to a full, lively palate. The fleshy well-rounded mouthfeel derives from grapes harvested at optimum ripeness.

Enjoy on its own, or serve with a variety of fish, seafood and poultry dishes.

My Notes:

About Brampton:

Launched in 1996, Rustenberg’s second label is named in honor of Brampton Beacon Bloomer, the farm’s champion Jersey bull who established a top quality dairy cow dynasty at Rustenberg. The Brampton range is all about mouth-filling, fruit-forward wines that are accessible, easy-to-drink, and sure to please. The brand regularly receives "Best Buy" and "Best Value" accolades in major wine publications such as Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar.

Grapes for the Brampton wines are selected from the Rustenberg estate vineyards on the Simonsberg as well as from Nooitgedacht, proprietor Simon Barlow’s property high on the Helderberg slope, overlooking False Bay, where mountain ridges are cooled by gentle salt breezes. All of the Brampton wines are fermented in stainless steel. Each vineyard block is vinified separately, and the parcels are later blended to create supple, fruit-driven wines. The whites are aged in tank in order to preserve the fresh fruit flavors of the wines. After the initial fermentation is complete, the reds are run to small oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation of up to 15 months before bottling.

Each Brampton label is etched with a "B", playfully scrawled in vivid, varietal-specific colors. The range is packaged under user-friendly screw cap closures, ensuring fresh, juicy flavors and consistent quality. Perfect everyday wines and great for casual gatherings, Brampton offers tremendous value and sophisticated winemaking in every sip.

Winemaker's Notes:

Scharffenberger Brut Excellence is made by the traditional méthode champenoise process – whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. The wine is approximately two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay and undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation. Scharffenberger Brut is made from its own 120-acre vineyards in the Anderson Valley. In addition, Scharffenberger Cellars has long-term contracts with select vineyards in the greater Mendocino County. This type of vineyard selection allows us to choose from the best vineyards in the area which enables us to produce our trademark cuvée.

The wine is two-thirds Pinot Noir which produces a red fruit (cherry and plum) forward nose combined with one-third Chardonnay which adds the tropical expression of litchi nut and mango. The 100% malolactic fermentation adds a vanilla cream character producing a round and full-bodied wine. After approximately two years on the yeast lees, there are notes of freshly baked bread and pastry that enhances the more fruit forward style of the wine. Finally, after several months on the cork the wine develops caramel and hazel complexors.

Explosive aromas brimming with lemon, lime and citrus blossom mingle with gooseberry and passionfruit to proudly proclaim this wine's varietal. A generous, fruit-forward palate shows juicy citrus flavors of lime, grapefruit and tangerine, balanced by bright, crisp acidity. The pleasant finish persists on the palate with great length of flavor.

This is an easy-sipping, eminently drinkable wine that doesn't sacrifice complexity or varietal character in its quest to be flat-out enjoyable. The perfect apéritif, this wine also makes an ideal partner to oysters and nearly any shellfish, as well as salads and light fish and chicken dishes.

My Notes:

About Freixenet:

The Freixenet cava business started in 1914. Pere Ferrer Bosch was the son of "La Freixeneda", the family estate located in the Alt Penedès region since the XIIIth century. Right from the start they decided to produce only cava, a natural sparkling wine, following the method used in Champagne (France) for a couple of centuries. The cellars were set up in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (Catalonia, Spain), a town situated in the heart of the Penedès region--already well-known from the era of the Roman Empire, for the quality of the wines produced there. In 1941, Freixenet launched what in time would become one of its leading products, the cava Carta Nevada and in 1974 the cava Cordon Negro.

Fruit-forward, lively and intense. A pale straw color, this wine's lifted aromas of pear and fig are rounded out by a touch of creamy vanilla. On the palate, these same characters are amplified and intensified, and harmonize with balanced oak. The palate is initially rounded; its fruit flavors give way to a welcome crispness and a cleansing, fruit-forward finish. The wine's balance makes it a food-friendly complement to a wide variety of dishes, including Virginia Crab Cakes and Sea Bass with a cream-based sauce.
