Martin Ray Diamond Mountain Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Martin Ray Diamond Mountain Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
(search item no. 106151)
Wine Enthusiast rating: 93 points
PRICE ON 7/28/2014: $39.99

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for the Martin Ray Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on the spectacular Constant-Diamond Mountain Vineyard, which rises to 2200 feet elevation above the Napa Valley floor. The vineyards nestle on a northeastern slope, where mornings are typically brisk and fog-free, while northwesterly winds continue to cool the vineyard throughout the growing season. This unique mountain vineyard site provides a variety of soils, superior sun exposure, and nighttime cooling—producing small, intense, full-flavored berries.

The 2005 harvest was an excellent vintage for Napa Valley, producing moderate crop yields. The slow ripening season without heat spikes contributes to the positive qualities of the fruit: intense color, concentrated flavors and beautiful aromatics. The vintage of 2005 promise wines with elegance, balance and structure.

The winemaking methods used in creating the Cabernet Sauvignon are the same as those perfected by the legendary Martin Ray over sixty years ago. Although labor intensive, these traditional techniques produce distinctly enhanced flavors and texture in our wines. Two weeks of open-topped fermentation and hand-punch down are time-honored winemaking practices that create rich structure in the wine. Minimal SO2 usage preserves fruit intensity and enhances rich, round tannins. Thirty-six months in French oak—45 percent in new oak barrels and 65 percent in 1–4 year old oak barrels—intensifies the complexity and character of the wine. The Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a tightly wound wine with a rich, concentrated structure and layers of well-integrated flavors. Enticing aromas of sumptuous cherries, black currants and ripe plums are accented by hints of vanilla oak that lead to a long, rich finish.

Pair the elegant Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon with your favorite hearty beef stew, rib roast or roast prime rib with peppercorns.

About Martin Ray:

Courtney Benham acquired the historic Martini & Prati winery in July 2003, which is now Martin Ray Winery and the home of their new Tasting Room. The Tasting Room structure, dating back to the 1900's, used to serve as a stable and bunkhouse where Italian immigrants stayed during harvest and crush. The winery also houses a 1 million gallon production facility that is used not only for wine production, but also as a 'custom crush' facility where over 20 clients crush their grapes and produce their wine.

Established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery, the historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. The winery was able to stay in operation during prohibition by selling sacramental wines by train to Rabbis through a winery in New York. Originally known as Martini & Prati, which was established in 1902, the winery was run by five generations of the Martini family and associated with the local Italian-American community that still includes the Sebastiani's, the Foppiano's, the Pedroncelli's and the Seghesio's.

Winemaker's Notes:

This Riesling exudes mandarin orange and sweet lime aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. The mouth-watering acidity is beautifully balanced by flavorful Washington Riesling fruit. After a decade we have truly found our 'Eroica style,' striving for beautiful bright fruit with crisp acidity and enhanced minerality.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Eroica:

About Eroica:

Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world's great Riesling producers. One from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and technique enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.

The first five vintages of Eroica Riesling (1999-2003) were named to Wine Spectator's "Top 100" list.

"I have long believed that a Riesling revival would have to start with a prominent New World winery like Chateau Ste. Michelle."
- Ernst Loosen, Dr. Loosen estate

Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit for this wine is grown in the foothills of the Adelaide range as you leave the beach side town of McLaren Vale. The sandy loam soils rise and gently face the west, allowing the vines to soak up the warm afternoon rays of the sun. The cooling evening breezes, which flow from the sea up the valley floor, give the vines relief during the summer nights and allow steady maturation of the berries while preserving elegance and natural acidity.

This medium to full-bodied Shiraz displays upfront cherry and licorice aromas and secondary spicy oak so characteristic of McLaren Vale Shiraz. The full palate shows more luscious ripe berry fruit, with complexity provided by soft mouth filling tannins. The freshness shows potential for aging, but the softness allows enjoyment now.

Additional wines from Angove Family Winemakers:

About Angove Family Winemakers:

The Angove family company, Angove's Pty. Ltd., ranks among Australia's largest privately owned wine companies and stands as one of the few with strong interests in distilling as well as grape growing and winemaking.

His early experimentation with vines, winemaking and distilling, led to the establishment of a proud family business. Dr. Angove's initial plantings at the township of Tea Tree Gully in the Adelaide foothills were the forerunner of one of the largest vineyards in the southern hemisphere - the magnificent Nanya Vineyard at Renmark in South Australia's Murray Valley.

Since World War II, the company has steadily expanded its operations and structure. Their Renmark facility has grown to become a major winemaking and distilling enterprise, with storage capacity for more than15 million litres of wine and spirit. In 1947, Thomas William Carlyon Angove, grandson of the founder, took the helm as Managing Director, beginning a new era in development.

In 1983, the fourth generation of the family took control, when John Carlyon Angove succeeded his father as Managing Director of the company.

The success of the Angove's identity owes a great deal to a pioneering spirit. The same urge that drove Dr. Angove to leave his home in Cornwall and emigrate to Australia is evident in many of the developments the company has taken since.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Syrahs are aged on their lees, ala Pinot Noir. Blended with about 5% Viognier and 25% whole clusters, went directly from the fermenter to barrel for the malolactic, and were aged on their lees without racking. For the first time we bottled after the second harvest, so this wines spent 24 months in barrel. And of course, was bottled without filtration.

Additional wines from Ramey:

About Ramey:

Following winemaking posts at Rudd, Dominus, Chalk Hill and Matanzas Creek, David Ramey and his wife, Carla began their own label in 1996 - a Chardonnay from the Hyde Vineyard. Now situated in downtown Healdsburg, Ramey Wine Cellars draws on exceptional vineyards in both Napa and Sonoma to fashion classically-styled Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay using traditional old world techniques.

Winemaker's Notes:

The classic Rutherford characters of earth and dust are present in this 2008 Frogs' Leap Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of cassis and currant combine with a mineral tone and a touch of warm spices. Across the palate rich black cherry flavors are enhanced with notes of pomegranate, spice, cedar and green olive. Elegant and soft, this wine's plush texture is balanced by firm yet yielding tannins and a bright acidity.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Frog's Leap:

About Frog's Leap:

Frog's Leap is an iconic California winery dedicated to organic farming, sustainable living and quality wines. Situated in the Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley, Frog’s Leap produces wine under the leadership of John Williams, a former dairy farmer from New York who created the winery in 1981.

John Williams grew up in Western New York and originally attended Cornell University to extend his studies as a dairyman. A fortuitous work-study program at Taylor Wine Company and a few bottles of wine later, John entered the Enology and Viticulture Masters Program at UC Davis. Following Davis, he returned to the Finger Lakes as the start-up winemaker at Glenora Wine Cellars. Taking inspiration from his first Napa Valley winemaking post in the cellars of Stag's Leap, John began making wine commercially in 1981 and named the new operation "Frog's Leap."

Frog's Leap presents a relaxed approach to enjoying wine. An easy hospitality and warm sense of humor is juxtaposed with a more serious sensibility when making wine. Frog's Leap produces some of Napa Valley's finest wines and, undoubtedly, has one of the wine world's best mottos: "Time's Fun When You're Having Flies."

The wines produced range from Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. We have quite the line up to offer so we hope you’ll try one of these delicious wines that harmoniously combine quality, sustainability and value.

First certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in 1988 Frog's Leap has been a leader in the industry for over two decades. The winery relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and control pests on a farm. Organic farming excludes the use of manufactured fertilizers and pesticides, plant growth regulators and genetically modified organisms. Organic farming involves mechanical weed control (via cultivating or hoeing) rather than herbicidal weed control.

Clear, bright, deep red almost black color with elegant red notes. A nose of violets, black fruits, some mint, graphite, and chocolate. Very complex and elegant. On the palate it is sweet and gentle at first, dark fruit flavors explode with fine tannins. Long finish.
