About Chateau La Gaffeliere:

The Château La Gaffelière vineyard sits on 25 hectares and has 22 hectares planted in vine, allon one parcel between the Ausone hill and the Pavie one. The vineyard is southwardly oriented, and receives an ideal amount of sunshine which benefits the 35 year old vines. The hillsides are clayey and calcareous, whereas hill bottoms are more siliceous.

Winemaker's Notes:

2008 was another drought year in Napa Valley, making the vines relatively less vigorous with smaller berries. Bud break in Artesa's Carneros vineyard occurred the usual time -- from mid to late March -- but a severe frost limited the crop size even further. The vineyard team worked hard through the season to ensure even ripeness among the berries. A long heat spell the first week of September signaled the beginning of harvest, however the temperature soon dropped drastically and the weather stayed cool and dry for the rest of the month. Our estate Pinot Noir grapes were hand harvested in September at full maturity.

Heady aromas of raspberry, cherry and wild strawberry jump from the glass, tinged with notes of anise and coriander. Pure and vibrant, the wine delivers sweet red cherry and berry flavors that pick up spicy notes of clove and cinnamon and a hint of toffee on the finish. Fruit concentration, bright acidity and velvety tannins are the hallmarks of this estate-grown Pinot Noir.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Artesa Vineyards and Winery:

About Artesa Vineyards and Winery:

Artesa's architecturally-acclaimed facility opened as Codorniu Napa in 1991, dedicated solely to méthode champenoise sparkling wine production. But in 1997, with the arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversion, the winery shifted focus dramatically. Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999.

Artesa (ahr TESS uh) means "craftsman" and connotes "handcrafted" in Catalan, language of Barcelona and their owner, Codorníu, one of the world's largest and oldest wineries. The Codorníu Group actually consists of six spectacular wineries whose wines are enjoyed daily in over 100 countries around the globe. So, while Artesa is a relative newcomer to Napa, their heritage is rich. They share five centuries of history with 15 generations of a remarkable winemaking family.

About Sequana:

Sequana Single vineyard Pinot Noir wines from Green Valley of Russian River Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands are named in honor of Sequana, the Franco-Roman goddess of the River Seine, which flows through the ancestral birthplace of Pinot Noir.

Winemaker and Pinot Noir specialist, James MacPhail, has complete control over the creation of Sequana's limited production wines – from farming to winemaking. He understands Pinot Noir's temperament, its ability to convey the signature of each single vineyard and its preference for restrained, gentle winemaking. He makes his Pinot Noirs by hand in small batches, using cold maceration and native yeasts. "My goal is to express each vineyard’s personality," says James.

Our Syrah defines the 2008 vintage character beautifully -- revealing a nose of pomegranate, black raspberry, flowers, black pepper and minerals. Interesting notes of grilled meat and wet stones accompany the usual Syrah flavors of black plum, pomegranate, and fresh herbs. Demonstrating uncommon elegance, balance and power, the finish is focused and long. This wine continues the 2008 trend of interesting, elegant wines with classical structure and memorable longevity.

Winemaker's Notes:

Imprimata aims to be in the best expression of this McLaren Vale vineyard. In the case of the inaugural vintage, it is a blend of 80% Shiraz and 20% Petite Sirah. The Tahbilk clone of Shiraz tends to produce wines that are reminiscent of the northern Rhone revealing more lifted violet and spice character. Petite Sirah is naturally higher in acid tannin and color bringing structure and minerality to the blend. The wine is made by Ben Glaetzer who shares Hammershlag's vision of wines that walk the line between power and elegance always finding balance between the two.

Blend: 80% Shiraz, 20% Petite Sirah

My Notes:

Additional wines from Imprimata:

About Imprimata:

Epicurean Wines is proud to announce the inaugural release of Imprimata, a Shiraz-Petite Sirah blend from the Australian property of Benjamin Hammerschlag. An old skeleton blue gum tree that stands on the McLaren Vale property marks the source of this collaboration between renowned winemaker Ben Glaetzer and Epicurean's founder, Benjamin Hammerschlag. The partnership has resulted in only 500 coveted cases of intensely elegant, complex and focused single vineyard Shiraz and Petite Sirah.

Concurrent with his passion for seeking out Australia's best wines, Hammerschlag began his quest for the perfect piece of property for his own wine. His search ended at one of the highest points in McLaren Vale in the sub-district of Seaview, known for producing fruit with a track record for the highest quality. The Imprimata vineyard consists of ironstone and clay over limestone and benefits from cool maritime breezes each afternoon. Upon securing this location, Hammerschlag got to work in the vineyard selecting 2 clones of Shiraz: 1654, which is very typical of South Australia and Tabhilk, sourced from the oldest winery in Victoria and more reminiscent of the northern Rhone. In addition to Shiraz, the vineyard is also planted with Petite Sirah, a varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color, thereby enhancing the wine's mineral character and providing structure to the blend.

His Winemaker: With a relationship rooted in 10 years of friendship, Ben Glaetzer and Benjamin Hammerschlag share a common vision of producing wines that while they exhibit a distinct ripeness, richness and power also are balanced and vibrant.

This well-structured wine will pair well with seafood entrees, roasted poultry dishes and even spicy Asian cuisine. Made with 100% Chardonnay.

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot.

We were right to hold this wine back from it's usual release date in the early fall. Already, it is starting to show the startling balance and beautiful austerity which are the hallmarks for Ciel du Cheval wines. Each year, we experience the paradox of perfectly ripened Merlot and Cabernet Franc in this warmer Cabernet site. This year is no exception. This wine has an almost obsessive appeal. For me the difficulty in describing the qualities in the wine is best overcome if the wine is seen as something magical and taken for that.
