Winemaker's Notes:

Raspberry and currants rush to the front, gently yielding to deeper notes of coffee, cedar, and hints of pencil shavings. Ripe, red fruit fills the palate. As the wine works its magic, undertones of maple, cinnamon and cardamom mingle flawlessly with the ripe fruit tones. A harmonious blend of skin and oak tannins give this complex wine a lingering finish and a firm structure. Our '07 Cabernet would be a great accompaniment to spice-rubbed filet mignon with a Cabernet reduction
My Notes:

About Gordon Brothers Cellars:

The Gordon Brothers vineyards were established in 1980. They have planted a total of 95 acres, consisting of 25 acres of Chardonnay, 21 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 acres of Merlot, 15 acres of Syrah, 14 acres of Sauvignon Blanc, and one acre of Gewurztraminer. The vineyards lie on a perfectly oriented south-facing slope ranging from an elevation of 600 to 682 feet above sea level, on the Snake River just above Ice Harbor Dam and the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers in southeastern Washington. These mature vines are proving that the Gordon Brothers vineyard has a singular, superior micro-climate. Superb air drainage and all the favorable effects of river sites for grape growing are only two of the reasons that these are some of the most sought-after grapes and wines in the Northwest.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2006 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon combines full body and richness with moderate alcohol. It has a garnet color and a nose of cassis liqueur, nutmeg and dark chocolate. On the palate, it has a rich, mouth-coating attack, great expression of fruit, a full-body and beautifully integrated tannins that lead to a long, spicy finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine will give drinking pleasure through 2026.

Vintage Description
The 2006 winter and spring were marked by heavy rains: March had the most rain days on record. Indeed the early season was quite wet and the rains extended well into April. The weather became dry and warm by late spring and bloom conditions were ideal. The early summer will be remembered for a searing 10-day heat wave in July, but August and September were mild, which coupled with normal yields led to a slow prolonged ripening. We began picking in Alexander Valley on September 12th and concluded harvest on October 17th.

Blending and Aging
Our 2006 Alexander Valley, a blend of wine from several different vineyards, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2007 and transferred the wine to 50% new and 50% once-used American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine's natural elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine was then aged in barrel for approximately 25 months and another 15 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release.

About Silver Oak Alexander Valley:

Great wine is meant to be savored with family and friends. This belief is at the heart of Silver Oak Cellars, where we have crafted extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon for over 35 years. Designed to be deliciously drinkable from the day it is released, Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon grows more supple and luxurious over time.

Silver Oak's Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is produced at our picturesque Geyserville estate, set amid the rolling hills of northern Sonoma County.

The Tudor-style estate features a massive flagstone arch that leads to a central courtyard with a fountain. High, arched glass doors open on the tasting room with its rustic stone fireplace. Designed to resemble the American oak barrels that are a signature of Silver Oak, the oak tasting bar is accented with steel barrel hoops. Beautifully etched glass doors highlight the stone-lined wine library next door, which contains an enormous oak barrel carved with the Silver Oak logo.

A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 1% Petite Verdot.

The Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a deep garnet color with intense aromas of ripe cherry, cassis, and pipe tobacco. Concentrated flavors of ripe plums, and dark bing cherries marry perfectly with the oak nuances. This is a well structured wine that is balanced with firm, velvety tannins which culminate in a long, elegant finish with hints of tobacco, dried herbs and fruit. This wine is ready to enjoy now or can be aged for 3-5 years.

Atlas Peak Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
(search item no. 106375)
Wine Enthusiast rating: 95 points
PRICE ON 12/25/2014: $59.99

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon holds true to site with its impressive balance and deep coloring. The aromas are a combination of ripe dark cherry and berry fruits. These powerful fruit flavors create a long, lingering finish of rich blueberry on the palate, a velvety mouthfeel and generous, but not harsh, tannins with every sip. This 2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is well suited for venison steaks and twice baked potatoes.

The Atlas Peak Mountain Series are limited production wines that showcase the best of the prestigious Napa Valley Mountains: Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain and Spring Mountain District. The grapes growing at high elevation, and above the natural fog line, experience lower daytime temperatures than those on the valley floor, allowing the grapes to stay cool while gaining maximum sun exposure. Mountain top vineyards have poorer soils, allowing better drainage, thereby producing smaller berries with more skin to juice. These wines are handcrafted by our winemaker to make more intense, more structured and age worthy wines.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Atlas Peak Winery:

About Atlas Peak Winery:

Atlas Peak was established in 1987. Over time it became clear that Atlas Peak's most valuable hidden resource was literally underfoot: the elevation of its vineyards. The grapes growing at high elevation, and above the natural fog line, experience much lower daytime temperatures than those on the valley floor, allowing the grapes to stay cool while gaining maximum sun exposure. As a result, growers up on the mountain can afford to harvest later and pick for flavor with less worry about over ripening and excessive alcohol. No grape develops as well in mountain conditions as Cabernet Sauvignon.

Atlas Peak crafts Napa Valley mountain appellation Cabernet Sauvignon from such prestigious areas as Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain District and Mount Veeder, in addition to Atlas Peak. Atlas Peak’s Cabernet Sauvignon wines are driven by an appreciation of mountain-grown fruit and winemaking techniques that capture the distinct flavors derived from the mountain appellations in which they are grown.

The 2007 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep, dark violet color with reddish hues. The nose offers intense, focused aromas of ripe cassis and black currant fruit intertwined with notes of tobacco, cedar, and a touch of eucalyptus. The mouthfeel is full and concentrated with layers of rich black berry flavors and elements of frosted mint, espresso and graphite.

Additional wines from Catena:

About Catena:

Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina's high altitude Malbec pioneers. The Catena family began making wine in Mendoza in 1902. Nicolas Catena, third generation family vintner, was one of the first to see the potential of Mendoza's mountain vineyards for producing high quality Malbec. In 1994, he became the first Argentine to exprot a world-class bottling of Malbec under the Catena label. Nicolas is joined by his daughter, Dr. Laura Catena, in their relentless pursuit of world-class quality from the family's high altitude vineyards. Laura has done extensive work in introducing Malbec and other varietal plant selections, soil and climate analysis, and sustainable practices throughout Mendoza. Head winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, has been at Catena Zapata since 2002 and works with Laura and Nicolas to make wines that express the family's vineyards and palate.

Winemaker's Notes:

The "Artist Series" Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from some of the finest and most highly regarded properties in Washington State. These vineyards produce fantastic wine in their own right. In blend, they produce extraordinary wine.

This wine has a generous nose of spicy oak and cedar integrated with bright and very ripe black fruits and cherry. A sweet, rich mouth feel begins with cassis and ripe black berry, leading towards chocolate and mocha. The finish is complex, generous, and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will definitely benefit from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should develop for eight years or more.

My Notes:

About Woodward Canyon:

Woodward Canyon Winery was founded by Rick Small in 1981. He is currently soul-searching on the subject of terroir. Debating the suitability of certain varietals to certain vineyard plots has become a quandary. On the one hand, the grapes growing there do fine and are the basis for extremely successful wines (Chardonnay, mostly); on the other, would Merlot or Cabernet Franc provide even more exciting character? The evolution of the Northwest wine industry continues.

Winemaker's Notes:

Above the fog line at 1,500 feet, this is an incredibly beautiful, yet stressed vineyard that produces trademark Mt. Veeder characteristics. Dried cherry, dried herb, briar patch, tobacco and tea aromas are complimented by plum, wild cherry and forest floor flavors with pronounced tannins and a long finish. This is a wine that I think has incredible cellaring potential, but as 2007 is my first vintage with this fruit, we'll have to be patient. However, this wine, like all my wines, should drink well upon release too.

Winemaker's Notes:

Forest floor and Chanterelle mushroom greet the nose immediately. The aroma quickly develops into layers of cardamom, clove, and leather. After decanting, citrus blossom, blackberry jam, and dried currants evolve. This wine is unquestionably Stags Leap District: balanced fine-grained tannin, concentration, and fresh minerality. Satsuma peel, dark chocolate, black cherry, and damson plum characterize the lengthy finish. At cellar temperature, further rewards can be found up to 24 hours after uncorking, in the form of maraschino cherry and raspberry.
My Notes:

About Cliff Lede Vineyards:

Established in 2002, Cliff Lede Vineyards encompasses 60 acres in the famed Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Owner Cliff Lede, viticulturist David Abreu, winemaker Kale Anderson and consulting winemaker Philippe Melka have come together to form an unrivalled team, making the most of this remarkable property. Their state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery boasts a berry-by-berry sorting system and conical tanks commissioned using a design inspired by the tanks of Chateau Latour. One tank per vineyard block ensures each lot evolves at its own pace and acres of caves with single-layer barrel storage ensure access to each barrel at all times. The winery produces Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their flagship, Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, is crafted from the steep hillside portion of the estate.

Winemaker's Notes:

Dense dark red to black colour of great intensity. An intense and rich bouquet led by the ripest cassis and berry fruits, rich and opulent but brooding in its youth. Behind the primary fruits are distinctive vineyard characteristics of dark chocolate and mint. The oak is background cedar which will recede further as the fruits emerge with some bottle age. This vineyard consistently produces intense fleshy and full mid palate Cabernet with massive fruit weight with dark cherry and blackcurrant flavours. At the time of writing the wine is very youthful and tight but it still has ample fruit sweetness that will only become more accessible as the wine matures in bottle. This is a big full wine with ample flavour and concentration in the classic Margaret River tradition.
My Notes:

About Hay Shed Hill:

Michael Kerrigan, formally the Chief Winemaker of Howard Park and MadFish Wines for the previous 12 years and a small group of partners took over the Hay Shed Hill vineyard and brands just before Christmas 2006.

"I knew the Hay Shed Hill vineyard and its potential could not pass up an opportunity to be part of such an exciting winery that is producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon wines as good as or better than any wine producer in Margaret River – and that means world class wine.

I believe that small, old, hands-on vineyards and wineries like Hay Shed Hill need to be owned and run by winemakers and grape growers; people who are attached to the land and the place and wish to express its character through the wine."

In a highly corporatized wine world we've seen highly visual wine companies 'huff & puff' with huge volume expectations with more press in the business news than favorable reviews in the wine columns. In the end corporations shouldn't run boutique wine businesses.

The 2006 Ladera Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is as deep and dark in color as it is in aroma and flavors. The nose on this wine is floral and smoky with rich blackberry aromas. The entry is elegant and soft with flavors of dark cherries, blueberry, cocoa, and spiced plum. The palate is layered with well structured tannins which lead to a long and complex finish of dark currant.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

My Notes:

About Ladera:

Ladera Vineyards is located in the Howell Mountain appellation of the Napa Valley at an elevation of 1800 feet. The winery was originally built in 1886 and is listed in the official book of ghost wineries of Napa Valley. The proprietors, the Stotesbery family, have completely restored the old stone building, returned it to its original intent as a gravity flow winery and added nearly 18,000 square feet of caves for barrel storage. In addition to the Howell Mountain Appellation Cabernet Sauvignon, Ladera also produces a vineyard-designated Cabernet called Lone Canyon Vineyard. Both wines express their hillside vineyard heritage and hence the mantra: hillside estate Cabernet.
