Winemaker's Notes:

This wine has a deep and intense ruby red color. Santa Rita Medalla Real Carmenere has a complex bouquet that combines fresh black fruits and spicy notes with elegantly defined oak to heighten the wine's chocolate and vanilla characteristics. A big and flavorful wine that is concentrated and and persistent with elegant tannins.

Delicious with steak, barbecue, venison, game birds, and ripe blue cheeses.

About Vina Santa Rita:

Heritage and enterprise are hallmarks of Santa Rita, one of Chile's premier wine estates. Founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernandez in Chile's Maipo Valley, this historic property was among the first to pioneer plantings of European grape varieties in Chile.

In 1980, it was acquired by its present owner, Ricardo Claro, under whom Santa Rita has reaped the rewards of continuous investment, resulting in a period of impressive growth, during which the winery has consolidated its position in the vanguard of Chile's most successful and innovative estates. Initiatives include the highly successful launch of Santa Rita’s 120 Series of wines and a range of ultra-premium wines, notably the highly acclaimed Casa Real and Triple C. Wide-ranging enhancements embrace the purchase of choice new vineyards, plantings with top quality clones, improved trellising and irrigation, balanced viticulture, restricted yields, later harvesting, individual block farming, small-lot vinification, and an increased emphasis on sustainable agriculture.

Today Santa Rita exports to more than 70 countries worldwide. The property accounts for outstanding vineyards in Chile’s most important appellations - the Maipo Valley; Casablanca; Rapel; Apalta; Leyda and Curico - enabling access to diverse climates and terrain.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep, red, crimson color. Lifted aromas of blue berries and blackcurrants mingle with biscuit sweet French oak, briary spice and a hint of cool menthol. A mouthful of juicy blue fruits hits the palate, balanced with briary spice and a wonderful oak sweetness. Hints of licorice and black olive add to the complexity and flow through with velvety fine tannins to a youthfully austere finish.

The Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, the unsung hero of Barossa wine, has been matured in new (20%) and seasoned (80%) French Oak for two years, achieving the structure, depth and balance expected from this premium Australian grape growing region.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Langmeil:

About Langmeil:

The land on which Langmeil Winery now stands was purchased by a 36 year old German blacksmith, Christian Auricht. He and his family arrived in South Australia in 1838 after emigrating from eastern-central Europe (Silesia) to escape religious persecution.

Christian planted his first acre of vines on the estate. The variety was Shiraz and the vines are still producing fruit today. Auricht's old vineyard is the source of Langmeil Winery's single vineyard Shiraz. This rare wine commemorates the pioneering spirit of the first settlers and, because of their willingness to endure so much hardship for the right to keep their faith, it has been named The Freedom 1843 Shiraz. The vineyard is believed to be one of the oldest known surviving Shiraz vineyards in the world (pictured here).

The property was purchased in 1996 by three local mates whose families have lived in the Barossa Valley for several generations: Richard Lindner, Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter. They restored the remaining old buildings and the village well and beautified the gardens. As a tribute to the early pioneers, the new owners refurbished the old winery and named it Langmeil, after the original village.

Langmeil's award winning premium range is internationally recognized and has contributed towards the winery being regarded as one of the top premium wine producers in Australia

Winemaker's Notes:

Idus is the result of a close collaboration between the Vall Llach estate and owners of trossos, or small vineyard blocks, who cultivate old-vine Cariñena and Garnacha. These ancient vineyards, located near the towns of Porrera and Torroja, Priorat, produce the essential Priorat character of this wine. The head-pruned, tiny "bonsai" vines yield naturally concentrated fruit that produce a wine ruby red in color with aromas of black licorice, marzipan, nutmeg and allspice. On the palate Idus is unctuous and mineral-rich with a very long finish. Meant to drink now or age for up to 30 years, this wine should be opened a half hour before consuming and served between 55-60ºC.

40% Cariñena, 20% Merlot, 15% Garnacha, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Vall Llach:

About Vall Llach:

From its founding in the early 1990s, by famed Spanish singer Lluís Llach and notary Enric Costa, Vall Llach winemaking has been governed by a commitment to rigor and quality. The winery lies in the tiny village of Porerra, in southern Catalonia, in the highly-acclaimed D.O.Q. Priorat. Here, the magnificent century-old vineyard estates of Vall Llach are home to 60- to 90-year-old Cariñena and Garnacha vines.

Old vines naturally produce low yields, and Vall Llach reduces yields even further through careful vineyard management for densely concentrated wines. Vineyards climb steep slate hillsides, receiving optimum sun exposure and beneficial water deprivation, further concentrating the fruit. Newer plantings of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah add complexity to the old-vine character, and the resulting wines - Vall Llach, Idus, and Embruix - have received high critical acclaim.

Winemaker's Notes:

Made from 100% Cannonau grown in the Costera vineyard. In order to achieve greater color extraction and flavor concentration, the juice is macerated with the skins for 12-15 days, with soft but frequent pump-overs. The wine is aged in French barriques for six to eight months prior to bottling.

The full bouquet of sweet black cherry, pepper, and licorice is typical of the Cannonau grape. Warm and full bodied on the palate with excellent texture, ripe fruit flavors and pleasant tannins, Costera is an excellent food wine that is best enjoyed with roast beef with herbs, filet mignon, stews and sharp cheeses.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Argiolas:

About Argiolas:

Located amid Sardinia's natural beauty, just north of Cagliari, is the Argiolas estate, widely known for its crisp and refreshing white wines and complex and precocious reds. Antonio Argiolas and his twin sons, Franco and Giuseppe, have worked diligently to fulfill their commitment to become the leaders in Sardinian enology.

Over the years, the Argiolas family has strongly insisted on its native Sardinian vines, focusing on the indigenous white varietals Nuragus and Vermentino and the red varietals Cannonau, Monica, Carignano and Bovale Sardo. Giacomo Tachis, father of prestigious Italian wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello and Solaia, has been instrumental in placing Argiolas on the quality map. Like the Argiolas family, Tachis has a true passion for the island's native varietals.

In 2004, The Wine Advocate said Argiolas produces, "essential wines for those looking to discover what the wines and viticulture of Sardinia are all about."

Winemaker's Notes:

Nipozzano Riserva 2008 greets the eye with a deep purplish red color. The nose is remarkably rich and multi-faceted, showing cleanly-delineated aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, and dried plum, lifted in turn by spicier impressions of black pepper, vanilla, cocoa powder, and espresso beans. A warm alcohol complements its smooth overall texture in the mouth, and a clean, vibrant acidity and silky, well-integrated tannins contribute to an impressive elegance. An almost-endless finish, with abundant aromatic fruit, completes a harmonious, well-balanced wine.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Frescobaldi:

About Frescobaldi:

The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of Italy's oldest wineries, with a history dating to the 1300s. The family has included medieval knights, bankers, lawyers and patrons of the arts. The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of the most significant wine producers in Italy, with nine estates—and roughly 2,500 acres—in Tuscany. The family has been growing wine since the late 19th century, when they became the first in Tuscany to import and plant French vine cuttings. Because they have been producing wines for more than 700 years, to experience Frescobaldi is to glimpse the history of Florence, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Wine Spectator has ranked many of their offerings in the 90s and their wines are consistently listed in the magazine's Top 100 Wines of the Year, encouraging wine enthusiasts from around the globe to become familiar with some of Italy's finest wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

"Salanques" is the name of the area where the vineyards are, close to the village of Poboleda.

Like other areas of the Priorat, Poboleda lies at high altitude and is characterized by steep, rock-covered hillsides. The vineyards of Mas Doix lie at between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The vines vary in age between 70 and 100 years old.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Mas Doix:

About Mas Doix:

The Celler Mas Doix was created by the Doix and Llagostera families in 1998. It is the reinitiation of a tradition that began in 1850. The gold medal obtained in the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888 and the silver medal won in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1878 remind the Doix family of the passion with which Juan Extrems Doix, Juan Doix's grandfather, used long ago to look after the vineyards and produce his wines.

The phylloxera outbreak did not mean the end of the family's vineyards. They were replanted with the Garnacha and Carinena varieties, native to the Priorat region, thereby maintaining the growth of the vineyards while the production was sent to the cooperative in Poboleda until it was able to be produced in Mas Doix's winery. Nowadays, the family labors with love and passion for the fruit grown in their hundred-year-old vineyards so they can produce great wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

In 2008, the punch-down fermentation process produced wines of rich color, fruit concentration, and a balanced tannin profile. The wine was aged in American and French oak for 14 months. Using some Petite Sirah in the final blend gave a bit of structure and spice to the finished wine. Just like the 2007 vintage, this wine pushes the envelope in terms of richness and concentration. With an intense fragrance of black cherries, boysenberry syrup, pepper and spice, the wine spreads out like velvet on the palate with dark port-like flavors of raspberries, black plums, dark chocolate, toffee, and spice.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Francis Ford Coppola Winery:

About Francis Ford Coppola Winery:

Francis Ford Coppola Winery, re-opened in July 2010, is the latest venture from Francis Ford Coppola, whose passion for wine, food and adventure is nowhere more evident than in this new production – a winery resort located in the heart of Alexander Valley, California. Among the many attractions at the property, Francis Ford Coppola Winery features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.

Francis puts it best, saying the winery is meant to be "a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy all the best things in life – food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all types. A place to celebrate the love of life."

Made from 100% hand-selected Cabernet Sauvignon from the best parcels of the estate. The grapes are carefully chosen and fermented in small lots to preserve the vineyard identity.

A ripe, fleshy style, with blackberry and fig sauce notes laced with bittersweet Grenache. Powerful and layered, with classic Cabernet aromatics. Dark and ripe, with a nice loamy edge lurking on the finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Maipe:

About Maipe:

Produced in the Luján de Cuyo subregion of Mendoza by the Pelizzatti family, Maipe wines are an expression of the deep rich soils and a commitment to excellence by the young winemaker, Liliana Iannizzotto, and consultant Alberto Antonini.

"Alberto Antonini (think Altos Las Hormigas) is a consultant at Maipe which in and of itself is an indicator that the winery is focused on quality." - Wine Advocate (Dec 08)

The wines are produced from grapes grown in Agrelo and Luján de Cuyo, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. Agrelo is a cool climate region in Argentina’s premier grape growing area. Each bottle captures the expression of the grape variety, showing its adaptation to the local soils and climate. The vineyard is planted with 18 hectares of Malbec and 32 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils are deep and textured, which facilitates plant development and confers great body and structure to the wines. Classified among the best areas within the province of Mendoza, year-long sunny and dry conditions permit almost organic viticulture practices. Its outstanding feature is a great daily thermal amplitude, with mild days and cold nights that allow a particular richness of polyphenols that improve the wines’ flavors and color.

Maipe was the Lord of the Winds for the ancient Andean people. Argentineans still invoke his name to clear the skies after a heavy rain or to temper the summer heat. These wines, children of the Sun and the Winds, are produced from grapes grown at the foothills of the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. The intense color and aromas capture the expression of the soils that gave them birth.
