Winemaker's Notes:

This blend impresses you right from the start. Aromas of black cherries and loganberries are infused with mocha and spice hints that give up the secret for what's about to come. Your first sip washes broadly across your palate like a flood of sweet, fresh fruit and the viscous mouthfeel keeps the flavors lingering for a while. The hints of baking spice and some oak keep the fruit flavors fresh and lively. This is a wine that you'll want to stack up in your wine rack (or closet) for any occasion.

Great all by itself or with all your favorite red wine foods like burgers, ribs, lamb chops, and even pizza.

Blend: 60% Malbec, 20% Bonarda and 20% Syrah

About La Posta:

We have tasted over a thousand wines since we began importing from Argentina. In that time, we have discovered a handful of grape growers whose results in the vineyards with specific varietals have been truly amazing--year in, year out. Our first encounter with many of these growers was at a posta del vinatero, or "tavern of the grape grower." Here they drank wine and spoke passionately for hours about their soils, their vines, and their quest for superior flavors in their grapes. We salute the hard work and skill of these growers by offering these vineyard-designated releases made solely with their special grapes.

Winemaker's Notes:

La Vendimia, which signifies "the harvest," represents the quality potential of Spanish jovens, or wines that have been aged for less than six months in oak barrels. Made by the famed Spanish winemaker, Alvaro Palacios (whose father founded the Palacios Remondowinery), La Vendimiais a blend of Spain's two original star varieties, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Lively and bright crimson in color, this wine has soft aromas of rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, fresh orchard fruit, and hints of orange rind. Currants, Bing cherries, fresh nectarines, plums and a hint of wild fennel are expressed on the palate. Meant to drink now through the next four years, this consumer-friendly wine can be served slightly chilled and is the perfect accompaniment to any dish.

Additional wines from Palacios Remondo:

About Palacios Remondo:

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is based in Alfaro in the Rioja Baja. This old family firm has been revitalized by the arrival of Alvaro Palacios who has already made his name, starting from scratch, with his extraordinary Priorato wines. He is now intent on bringing the family Rioja company into the front line. The wines are made from their own vineyards, a rarity in the Rioja region.

Palacios is deeply committed to organic viticulture and natural winemaking practices, such as use of organic fertilizers in the stone-covered, clay soils. All wines are unfiltered and clarified only with egg whites, no exogenous yeasts or commercial compounds are added to the wines and sulfites are kept to minimum levels. Total respect for his vineyard and its surrounding environment results in wines – La Montesa, Propiedad, Plácet Valtomelloso and La Vendimia – that express the true nature of the estate’s soils.

Winemaker's Notes:

Evodia is an exciting new project in the Denominacion de Origen Calatayud, hailed as one of Spain's most progressive and promising wine growing regions. It is here, in the vineyards of Atea, that Altovinum sources their Garnacha grapes for Evodia. In addition to the remarkable climate due to elevation, the property is comprised of pure schiste soils, known as pisara in the local area. Aficionados familiar with the wines of the Priorat and the Roussillon are well acquainted to this soil type and its extraordinary influence on the wines.

Blend: 100% Garnacha

About Almansenas:

Ester Nin Llort started her career in 2004 at Almanseñas in the La Mancha appellation of Almansa. There, together with Pep Aguilar and Patri Morillo, both oenologists from the Priorat, she takes charge of the viticulture and oenology for the estate where three wines are made from Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell.

The estate Venta La Vega (La Vega Inn) is on the "Royal Way" from Madrid to Valencia & Alicante, where an inn once stood and welcomed travelers’' tales. The vineyard fields are scattered with ancient rainwater troughs, pine trees and oak trees which abruptly meet with the cornfields on the Almansa plateau.

About Quinta do Crasto:

Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, on the right bank of the river mid-way between Regua and Pinhao, Quinta do Crasto has been in the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century. Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto dates back to ancient times. The name Crasto is derived from the Latin word "castrum," or Roman fort. Together with their winemakers and their entire team, they seek to produce year after year wines that display the unique and beautiful characteristics of the Douro, through a tireless devotion to tradition, integrity and excellence.

About Columbia Crest:

Founded in 1983, Columbia Crest has grown from a small winery in a relatively unknown wine region to one of the most significant wineries in the U.S. and a major force behind Washington state's emergence as a world-class wine region. Over the years, the winery has remained committed to delivery handcrafted, small-lot wines, as well as affordable, superior quality everyday wines. In 2009, the winery reached a milestone when Wine Spectator named their 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Year," the first time a wine from Washington state has received the ranking. This accolade was not only a historic moment for Columbia Crest, but for all wineries in Washington and reinforced the belief that the region is among the best wine-producing areas in the world.

Winemaker's Notes:

Grapes for the Taltarni Three Monks Cabernet Merlot 2006 were sourced entirely from Taltarni's Pyrenees vineyard. 2006 was a dry, warm vintage with lower yields producing ripe, concentrated fruit that was harvested two weeks earlier than expected. Cabernet and Merlot are classic blending partners with the Cabernet providing length and structure and the Merlot adding softness and midpalate weight. A small amount of Petit Verdot has been included for added richness and texture.
My Notes:

About Taltarni:

Established in 1969, Taltarni was one of the founding wineries in the iron-rich Pyrenees wine region in Victoria. John Goelet, a direct descendant of the Guestier wine merchant family of Bordeaux, discovered the Taltarni Vineyard through a worldwide search for a site comparable to the great vineyards of Bordeaux. From the outset, Taltarni has a strong French influence with the initial plantings of Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Soon after, Taltarni extended its plantings with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay. The Goelet family also sources Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Taltarni has built its reputation on elegant sparkling wines that are crafted using methode traditionale techniques, as wells as producing exceptional red and white wines. The distinctive labels, featuring a 17th century cartouche, represent the attention to detail and the French elegance and finesses that are hallmarks of all Taltarni wines.

PRICE ON 11/28/2014: $14.39

Winemaker's Notes:

Mustiguillo is unique in its quest to "rescue"the indigenous Bobal variety, a grape known primarily for rose production, but when handled carefully, can produce reds of remarkable quality – such as those from Bodegas Mustiguillo.
My Notes:

About Mustiguillo:

A relatively new winery, Mustiguillo was created to give a place and prominence to the unheralded varietal Bobal. The owners believe strongly that this grape, when cropped low and harvested later, can produce wines that rival some of the greatest wines of Northern Spain. As such, many of the old vines of the property have been kept (some as old as 90 years old) and new vines of Bobal have been planted as well.

Utiel-Requena lies on a warm, arid plateau at an average of 700 meters above sea level. Mustiguillo owns four distinct parcels scattered throughout the zone including two over 800 meters. Soil structure is quite poor, with low amounts of organic material. Gravel, some clay, and smaller amounts of limestone make up the bulk of the vineyards. Rainfall is lower than the Spanish average and this shortage is thought to contribute to the excellent fruit concentration of these vines.

Garnet in color, surprisingly more transparency than I was expecting. Sparkling and bright in the glass—a wine that looks alive. The fruit is ripe and juicy, nicely steering away from any heavy jamminess. The tannins are firm and slightly drying, but overall very comfortable in the mouth and nose. Fabulous cured meat and smokiness in both the aroma and flavor profiles.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Bodegas Ateca:

About Bodegas Ateca:

Bodegas Ateca is a joint project between the Gil winery family and the well-known importer, Jorge Ordonez. The bodegas is located in the Calatayud region of northeastern Spain. The majority of the vineyards are grown in highly permeable and healthy soils with a high amount of limestone. The soils are rocky, loose and low in nutrients. The climate in this region varies vastly from day to night, allowing for more balance between acidity and alcohol.

The main varietal here is Garnacha grown from old-vines up to 80-100 years old.
