Winemaker's Notes:

Sourced from Columbia Valley vineyards in eastern Washington including our Cold Creek, Canoe Ridge Estate and Indian Wells vineyards.

Our goal with the Columbia Valley Cabernet is to highlight concentrated Washington red fruit in an accessible style. This is our inviting Cab with plenty of complexity and structure with silky tannins. It's also very versatile with food-try it with beef, pork or pasta.

Additional wines from Chateau Ste. Michelle:

About Chateau Ste. Michelle:

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery combines Old World winemaking with New World innovation and is best known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau Ste. Michelle receives some of the highest accolades in the industry, including "American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast for 2004 and "2005 Winery of the Year" by Restaurant Wine. In addition, the winery's Eroica Riesling, crafted from a partnership with German winemaker Ernst Loosen, has been named to Wine Spectator's prestigious "Top 100" wines list for five consecutive years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the few premium wineries in the world with two state-of-the-art wineries, one devoted to whites and another to reds. This dedicated approach to winemaking allows winemaker Bob Bertheau to build winemaking programs to the unique specifications of red and white wines. While all of Chateau Ste. Michelle's vineyards are located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains where the climate is dry and sunny, Bob Bertheau makes the award winning white wines in Woodinville, 15 miles northeast of Seattle. The winery's expansive, 87-acre estate hosts more than 250,000 visitors annually for tours, tastings, dinners and outdoor summer concerts.

Authentic Chilean style. Dark almost purple core with deep sooty red at the fringes. A blend of concentrated blackberry and plum softened by some red fruit character. Distinctive dried herbal and white pepper spice character. A superb balance of full fruit, good acidity, sweet French oak, and full tannins on the long lingering finish. Cutting edge grape coming into its own a premiere producer.

About Casa Silva:

Founded in 1892 by French wine pioneer and ancestor Emilio Bouchon, Casa Silva is now owned by Mario Silva and family - the fifth generation of winemakers. Many of the vines planted are over 90 years old, carried over from Bordeaux, pre-phylloxera, by the first generation. Previously selling their juice to larger, bulk wineries, Casa Silva began a bold, estate bottling program in 1997. Now, the Silva Family are viewed as leaders of the new generation of premium wine producers, and their wines have received international acclaim.

Sandeman Madeira Fine Rich
Sandeman Madeira Fine Rich
(search item no. 1582)

PRICE ON 9/17/2014: $19.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Sandeman Fine Rich Madeira is made in the traditional manner on the Atlantic island of Madeira. The rich soil and volcanic subsoil give this wine a unique character which is enhanced by the winemaking and ageing in "estufas". It is rich, well balanced and a good accompaniment to many rich dishes and desserts (such as chocolate). It is also an essential ingredient in classic cuisine.

Medium dark amber colour with pronounced golden highlights. Clean nutty aromas, light complexity and very agreeable. Brilliant wine - a good quality young Madeira in evolution. Medium rich flavour, nutty and slighty complex, with a good clean finish.

The rich character of Sandeman Fine Rich Madeira make it a perfect match for many rich appetisers, as well as desserts with strong flavours - like bitter chocolate. It is also a respected ingredient in classic high quality cuisine and adds a unique touch of flavour to any dish.

Once open Sandeman Fine Rich Madeira can remain fresh for up to 4 - 8 weeks.

Additional wines from Sandeman:

About Sandeman:

The House of Sandeman was founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman, a determined young Scotsman. From a modest start two hundred years ago as a wine merchant in the City of London, to today's impressive lodges in Oporto and bodegas in Jerez, and the world's best known brand of Port and Sherry, there has been a continuous commitment to quality. The growth of Sandeman Port and Sherries over two centuries has been based on a balance of tradition and innovation, respecting heritage but always seeking improvement. In 1980, Sandeman became part of Seagram; today, as the seventh generation of the family and Chairman of the old firm, George Sandeman continues the Sandeman commitment to the quality of Sandeman Ports and Sherries, and to the future.

Wine Spectator rating: 90 points
PRICE ON 9/17/2014: $15.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Made from Tinta Negra Mole grapes collected from multiple small, terraced vineyards that cling to the steep mountainous slopes of the island, this is a medium-dry wine combining soft fruit flavors with a dry, nutty quality. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks until a neutral grape spirit brandy is added to stop the fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes a heating process, estufagem, where it is placed in cask in a special lodge or estufa where it will remain for at least three months. This heating process oxidizes the wine, giving it a very long shelf life and its characteristic nutty, rich flavors.
My Notes:

About Leacock's:

The island of Madeira was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese mariner João Gonçalves Zarco who had been instructed by Prince Henry the Navigator to explore the West African Coast. Prince Henry appointed Zarco first Governor of the island and ordered him to plant sugar cane and vineyards. The original impetus to the trade in Madeira was provided in the late 17th Century by the King of Portugal, Felipe I, who ordered that ships bound for the new Brazilian colony should call at the island to take on wine for the settlements that he was developing there.

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company.

In 1925, the wine industry was going through tough times and so both Leacock's and Blandy's amalgamated their interests and joined the Madeira Wine Association (now the Madeira Wine Company). The origins of the Madeira Wine Company started in 1913 when two companies, Welsh & Cunha and Henriques & Camara, joined forces to form the Madeira Wine Association Lda. Through the lean years that followed more companies joined to ensure their survival by reducing costs and pooling production whilst maintaining commercial independence.

Through the lean years that followed more companies joined to ensure their survival by reducing costs and pooling production whilst maintaining commercial independence.

Leacock's today is one of the four main brands in the company together with Blandy's, Cossart Gordon and Miles, and whose main markets include the United States of America, the Scandinavian countries, and the United Kingdom.

Having recently been completely re-packaged with a new and modern label, Leacock's is set to continue its prominent positioning in the world market.By the reign of the English King, Charles II, demand for Madeira was firmly established along the North American seaboard. Indeed the wine played such an important part in the American way of life that it was used to toast the Declaration of Independence (July 4th 1776) and the Inauguration of George Washington (first President of the United States -1789) who, it was said, "drank a pint of Madeira at dinner daily."

Bright ruby color with aromas of cherry skin, dried cranberries smoky undertones. The palate shows more cherry and dried fruit flavors with earthy notes. Clean with a nice solid backbone completed by a racy acidity. Lots of cranberry flavors hint of strawberry. Balanced, tight, lean fruit, an ideal accompaniment to grilled fish and fowl or barbecued meats.

Additional wines from Schug Estate Winery:

About Schug Estate Winery:

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards).

Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart.

Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics.

Winemaker's Notes:

A dark, opaque, rich ruby red color. So rich in color it almost stains the glass. A very fruit forward nose. Cranberries and black currents with a hint of tobacco, anise and mint leaf. On the mouth, the black currants dominate the palate with dried cranberries and raspberries following as secondary flavors. A peppermint finish with traces of tobacco and vanilla. Bright acidity balances well with the tannins.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Clos LaChance:

About Clos LaChance:

Clos LaChance is a small, family-owned winery, located in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We produce limited quantities of hand-made wines from local vineyards and other premium appellations throughout Northern California. The name Clos LaChance is derived from the French word "clos" for the fenced area around a vineyard (in this case the owners' home vineyard), and from co-owner Brenda Murphy's maiden name, LaChance.

The Clos LaChance trademark - a hummingbird among the grapevines - is the primary feature on our label. The hummingbird was chosen not only for its grace and style, but also for its strength. The hummingbird is a welcome addition into vineyards for its "energetic" efforts in keeping other birds away.

A golden yellow colored wine. On the nose it is fresh, intense and complex, where mineral aromas predominate. Elegantly complemented by hints of honey and citrus fruits that evoke a smooth maturity with a balanced acidity. This Chardonnay has a toasted finish.

Aromas of mineral, apple, pear and spice lead to complex, layered flavors of spiced golden apple, Meyer lemon and candied ginger, with just a hint of hazelnut and caramel. "Medium" on the richness scale, KARIA charms with its balance of ripe fruit, understated barrel spice, mouth-filling texture and refreshing acidity. The wine will pair perfectly with a wide range of dishes; start with crab and corn chowder, garlic-studded roast chicken or salmon pot pie.

Additional wines from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars:

About Stag's Leap Wine Cellars:

Considered one of the "first growths" of Napa Valley, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars produces renowned Cabernet Sauvignon from its historic Stags Leap District estate vineyards. Founded in 1970, the winery brought international recognition to California winemaking and the Napa Valley when the 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won the now famout 1976 Paris Tasting, also known as the "Judgement of Paris." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' three estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V. and Fay - are among the most highly regarded and collected Cabernet Sauvignons worldwide. The wines are fashioned to express richness balanced by elegant restraint, an approach often described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove."

Winemaker's Notes:

The Estate Sauvignon Musqué allows for a multitude of aroma profiles in our Sauvignon Blanc. Technically, Sauvignon Musqué is a clonal selection of Sauvignon Blanc. In the vineyard, when picked at lower sugar levels, the resulting wines maintain their crisp, grapefruit character. However when allowed to develop the true Muscat flavors in the field, the finished wine shows beautiful honeysuckle and tropical floral notes. Most of the vines are grown at Markham's two Estate vineyards, both located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. The winery's Estate Semillon grapes are harvested to provide a juicy texture and honeydew melon character to their decidedly California-style Sauvignon Blanc. Food friendly, this wine was built in the vineyard and cold-fermented slowly. Careful blending was used to highlight the abundant tropical aromas that make this wine shine.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Markham Vineyards:

About Markham Vineyards:

In 1972, Bruce Markham arrived in Napa Valley with the dream of starting a winery. Intent on crafting world-class wines for years to come, he purchased the "little jewels" that are still the Markham vineyards today. He was a pioneer in what is now the very heart of Napa, buying premium vineyard land before many understood the tremendous potential the valley offered for producing fine wines. He also purchased a winery. Originally established by Jean Laurent, the Markham winery dates back to 1879. As one of the founders of Napa winemaking and viticulture, Markham Vineyards takes great pride in its legacy of exceptional mountains and magnificent vineyards, Markham's winery has the distinction of being the fourth oldest continuously operated winery in Napa County.

Today, Markham Vineyards owns 350 acres of vineyards strategically located in several of Napa Valley's best growing regions. From its Calistoga vineyards in the north to Oak knoll in the south, Markham has the luxury of hand-selecting grapes from several diverse microclimates to achieve its balanced and rich wines. Winemaker Kimberlee Nicholls sums up the benefits offered by this extraordinary palette of vineyards: "The expressions of terroir from each unique location create a greater whole; each vineyard complements and elevates the next. The result is endless blending options to weave together the rich fruit flavors, elegant acid structure, broad texture and velvety tannins we want in our wines."

Winemaker's Notes:

Critics are touting 2007 as one of the finest vintages for Pinot Noir in recent years, so naturally we have eagerly awaited the release of our Heritage Reserve bottling. The maturity of our own vineyards as well as several new growers we have added over the years has given us an even broader spectrum of individual lots to choose from, for making our top blend.

We set aside the finest barrel lots of our Carneros Pinot Noir for extended aging to create our "Heritage Reserve" Pinot Noir. Each vineyard lot was chosen to express its own individuality in harmony with the final blend. The result is a limited bottling that is as rich and powerful as it is graceful and charming. A bouquet reminiscent of roses, warm cherries and Kirsch liqueur leads to rich flavors of black cherry, cranberry, and hints of lavender, all finishing with hints of tobacco and spicy new oak. This wine is perfect for the collector's cellar, and will continue to age gracefully for up to 10 years.
