Winemaker's Notes:

Well balanced, with a rich nose of cherry and plum, followed by hints of chocolate and vanilla. The palate is flavorful, showing rhubarb and pomegranate with oak overtones, followed by hints of sweet tobacco on the finish.

Pair with beef tri-tip or rosemary-rubbed filet mignon.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Concannon:

About Concannon:

A historic and once-famous Livermore winery, Concannon was bought and sold several times in the 1980's by large conglomerates that were purchasing each other. Each sale resulted in a loss of focus, and the brand suffered. In 1992 Eric Wente of Wente Vineyards saved it from the jaws of destruction by assembling a group of eight investors to buy the winery. However, Concannon Vineyard is a totally separate company in both ownership and operation from Wente Vineyards.

Nestled amidst the vineyards and rolling hills along the Livermore Valley, Concannon has been widely recognized for crafting full-flavored, complex and award-winning wines. Ocean air pours through the Golden Gate each afternoon cooling the influence of the sun, and enabling the grapes to develop both the ripe sugars and firm acids that fine wine demands.

Concannon is perfectly positioned geologically, atop a 600-foot-deep bed of gravelly soil. These rocks require the vines to drive their roots deep into mineral-rich deposits, and it also keeps the grape and cluster size in moderation.

More than 140 of Concannon's 200 Livermore estate acres are Petite Sirah plantings grafted onto improved rootstocks. Over the decades, they have carefully tuned their planting and trellising to take full advantage of the unique terroir. The result: intensely flavored, memorable wines vintage after vintage.

Additional wines from Trumpeter:

About Trumpeter:

Bodega La Rural was founded in 1885 by Don Felipe Rutini. From Italy, he brought with him his oenological degree and the vast experience he had acquired from his father's vineyards. The first vines were planted in Maipu, Mendoza and the winery was installed with French Oak barrels and the best in modern machinery. Under his work ethic, "Labor and Perseverance," four generations of the Rutini family continued his legacy. They brought together hard work and the most advanced technologies in viticulture in the search for excellence in oenology.

Today, the winery boasts stainless steel tanks, two pneumatic presses, imported crushers, vacuum pumps and filters, in addition to 500 new French Oak barrels. Over the last couple of years, the Trumpeter wines have soared to new heights in popularity in the United States. Offering four varietals: a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Malbec, Bodega La Rural has crafted new wines with attractive new labels that have created quite a stir in the media. These wines have received praise in many respected publications ranging from Wine Spectator and Wine & Spirits magazine to the Washington Post daily newspaper.

Wine Spectator rating: 88 points
PRICE ON 7/23/2014: $29.99

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 vintage gave our Napa Valley Merlot great structure and deep, concentrated fruit character. The wine's aromas and flavors express rich, velvety layers of black cherry, ripe plum, dark chocolate, clove, sage and tangerine zest. Notes of vanilla and cedar come from aging in more than 40 percent new oak barrels.

The firm tannin structure beautifully supports the highly extracted flavors, making it an outstanding food wine, especially with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, pork or game, or with wild mushrooms. As a "foodie" as well as a winemaker, Chris recommends this Merlot with Moroccan lamb tagine and couscous with fragrant spices and preserved lemons.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Provenance Vineyards:

About Provenance Vineyards:

Provenance Vineyards showcases the distinctiveness of Napa Valley's best growing areas for red wines by selecting some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Rutherford and Oakville districts and Merlot vineyards in the Carneros district. The same uncompromising approach also characterizes Provenance winemaking, with the goal of bringing the grapes from these great vineyards to their fullest potential. Starting with its inaugural 1999 vintage, Provenance's approachable, yet cellar-worthy wines display a fine symmetry of substance and elegance.

The word provenance means "origin" or "source." In the art world, a provenance is the record of a work’s ownership, from its creation to the present day. Connoisseurs place great importance in provenance as a guarantee of authenticity. The name reflects Provenance Vineyards' goal of creating fine wines that are works of art.

Winemaker's Notes:

Beautiful pink and red tones and a floral nose full of cherry fruit and hints of aniseed and brown sugar. The wine is rich, fresh and balanced. The delightful and distinctive character of La Vielle Ferme Rose is the judicious blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah grapes.

To accompany most foods or to be enjoyed on its own, this is a delicious wine for easy drinking.

My Notes:

Additional wines from La Vieille Ferme:

About La Vieille Ferme:

Jean Pierre Perrin established La Vieille Ferme over 35 years ago, when he chose to produce an inexpensive, straightforward Rhône wine to sell by direct mail to French wine lovers. He used the same grape varieties in similar proportions to those planted at the family's Château de Beaucastel, in a similar vinification process. The result was an immediate success in France, a wine of character and style in keeping with its Beaucastel heritage.

Initially, Jean Pierre made only Côtes du Rhône, but steeply rising grape prices in 1976 caused him to switch to Côtes du Ventoux and eventually to produce a white wine from the mountainous Côtes du Luberon. La Vieille Ferme was introduced to the United States in 1970. The response was an immediate, overwhelming acceptance and an outpouring of critical acclaim from eminently knowledgeable critics who recognized La Vieille Ferme for its consistently fine quality and value.

Winemaker's Notes:

Campuget Rose's color an intense peony pink. Its bouquet is very aromatic, exhaling scents of small red fruits such as raspberries or blackcurrants. In the mouth there is a perfect balance between vivacity and mellowness. The final taste is very long, leaving a delicate impression of fruitiness.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Chateau de Campuget:

About Chateau de Campuget:

Château de Campuget in Costieres de Nimes is a beautiful wine property dating back to 1640. The soil is typical for the region, with many stones that force roots to find water deep in the lower layers of clay, contributing additional character to the wine. The property is managed by Jean-Lin Dalle, assisted by his son Franck-Lin, named after one of Jean-Lin's heroes, Benjamin Franklin. Château de Campuget which has belonged to the Dalle family since 1941, produces AOC Costieres de Nimes wines.

BELIEFS: The Dalle family makes every effort to produce wines that are true to the "terroir" of the Costieres de Nimes.

NOTES: Château de Campuget wines are produced by respecting tradition while utilizing the most modern oenological techniques. Although equipped with stainless-steel tanks and modern tools, wines are made and matured in a traditional way, and quality is strictly controlled from the vineyard to the bottle. Chateau De Campuget's main varieties are Syrah and Grenache Noir for the grapevines classified in AOC. For white wines, the company uses Roussanne and Grenache Blanc in Costieres de Nimes and Chardonnay in Vin de Pays.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is classic Dry Creek Valley Cabernet.

At first swirl, deep aromas of raspberry, sage and dried floral elements come forward. On the palate, these aromas combine with black cherry and chocolate creating a mouthful of silky, well-integrated tannins. With some airing, the wine fleshes out even more providing dimension, depth and length. The finish lingers on for more than a minute with fine tannins that are very elegant and structured. Truly a blockbuster wine from an incredible vintage!

My Notes:

Additional wines from Dry Creek Vineyard:

About Dry Creek Vineyard:

In 1972, when David S. Stare opened the doors to Dry Creek Vineyard, it was the first new winery to be built in the Valley since Prohibition. Dry Creek created the first Sonoma Fume Blanc, originated the Dry Creek Valley AVA, and was an early advocate for Bordeaux-style blending.

Today, Dry Creek Vineyard is committed to vineyard diversity, vinifying individual lots of fruit separately, and then blending carefully for each final cuvee. Dry Creek Vineyard is also a leader in the stewardship of pre-Prohibition Zinfandel vines and vineyards, and has isolated a clone, called the "Heritage Clone," which is bottled separately from their "Old Vines" Zinfandel (containing wine only from vines no younger than 50 years old), and which has made very promising wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

Known for luscious Cabernet Sauvignons, this wine is a classic example of Geyser Peak Winery's intense, lively style. Forward fruit characters of black cherry and blackberry dominate the aromas, with underlying grace notes of dark chocolate and black pepper. In typical Geyser Peak style, the bright fruit is nicely supported by a restrained oak character. The palate is rich, round and lush, seamlessly pairing the cherry and berry fruit with a hint of spice and vanilla. The fine-grained tannins meld into a persistent, lingering finish.
My Notes:

Winemaker's Notes:

Spellbound Cabernet Sauvignon showcases lush texture and bold dark fruit flavors with a slight hint of oak and spice. Cedar and tobacco aromas complement integrated lively tannins and fill out your palate, allowing the wine to be consumed on its own or with your favorite food. The Spellbound Cabernet Sauvignon continues to be one of our shining stars because of the wine's balance and intensity of flavors.

With the 2009 vintage, California's Lodi and Central Valley regions experienced warm days that were cooled down in the evenings from the fog off of the Sacramento Delta. These warm temperatures allowed for the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to become rich in structure and obtain dark fruit characteristics. We are proud to offer our Cabernet Sauvignon, and hope you also find the rich textures, chocolate finish, and balanced structure as delicious as we do.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Spellbound:

About Spellbound:

Spellbound was born when Rob Mondavi and Paul Hoffman decided to craft wines that are relaxed enough to enjoy every day yet special enough to celebrate milestone events. In honor of California's rich winegrowing heritage, this winemaking team sources fruit from established and emerging wine regions throughout the state, including Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Santa Barbara and Lodi.

Currently Spellbound makes Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. All three wines are approachable and food-friendly, perfect for causal dinners and black tie functions alike. Because Spellbound wines pair so well with food, they've become a favorite choice of fine restaurants.

On the nose, the 2010 Shiraz shows earthy gravel, spicy licorice and dense dark mulberries, while the sweet upfront berry fruit presented on tasting gives way to complex cedar, earth and spice notes, wrapping up with ample structure and grip. The vibrant, juicy fruit runs the length of the palate and lingers with a "have another glass" finish.
