Winemaker's Notes:

This is the first estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon bottling from Joseph Phelps. The blend contains five of our seven estate vineyards: the Home Ranch in St. Helena, Suscol in South Napa, Yountville in the Oak Knoll District, Banca Dorada in Rutherford and Las Rocas in the Stags Leap District. This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with aromatics of blackberry, plum and black cherries intertwined with characteristics of chocolate covered espresso beans and licorice. The wine covers the palate with concentrated, balanced tannins and a long, silky finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

About Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned winery committed to crafting world class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros and South Napa Valley. In 1999, the Phelps family added 100 acres of vineyard property near the town of Freestone on the Sonoma Coast, where Phelps now grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phelps is best known for its flagship Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varietals, Insignia, first produced in 1974. Awarded Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" in 2005, Insignia is widely regarded as a qualitative benchmark for California winemaking.

Winemaker's Notes:

The wonderfully pure, pretty nose of our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of warm berry cobbler, with lovely toasted boysenberry and blackberry scents joined by hints of wild cherry, loamy earth and oak vanillin. On the supple, beautifully structured palate, the wine offers rich, vibrant blackberry, plum and black cherry flavors framed by perfectly integrated tannins and a long, savory finish. Delicious now, this elegantly sumptuous Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will develop further nuance with another 5-7 years' bottle age.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Cakebread:

About Cakebread:

Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born.

As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine also available as part of the Jordan and Gourmet Food Pairing Set

A seamless wine, our 2007 vintage exudes beautiful, dense blackberry aromas that echo through the mid-palate. The mouthfeel is silky-smooth with soft, round tannins accented by a vanilla quality from the French oak. Enjoyable now or worthy of cellaring through 2020.

Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and less than 1% Malbec

Winemaker's Notes:

The mineral silky tannins build nicely on the palate and provide good structure and impressive length. This wine will benefit from bottle age and if cellared correctly will drink well over the next 15 years.

Blend: Shiraz 94%, Viognier 6%.

My Notes:

Additional wines from d'Arenberg:

About d'Arenberg:

One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d'Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently. The original vineyards were established by Joseph Osborn in 1912 in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. A century on, the estate has grown to 345 acres, and the mantle now rests with fourth-generation winemaker, Chester Osborn. By maintaining a focus on traditional winemaking and nurturing their old-vine material, the Osborn clan has successfully established themselves as one of the country's leading producers of concentrated wines that are full of character.

Winemaker's Notes:

A true reflection of Barossa's soil and climate, Entity displays youthful dark fruits of blackberry and plum that combine with a hint of mocha and savory French oak. The long, rich palate is driven by concentrated dark fruit characters that are balanced by firm tannins, bright acidity and well integrated French oak that adds structure and polish to the wine.
My Notes:

About John Duval:

John Duval began his self-titled label in 2003. Duval graduated from Adelaide University in 1973 with a degree in agriculture and winemaking before becoming a winemaker for Penfolds for the next 29 years. Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and was lucky enough to oversee one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. He received Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange named the Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995.

Duval focuses on fruit that comes from older vines in Barossa, including Rhone varietals, leading to one of his stellar ones, "Plexus."

Winemaker's Notes:

This is our 10th release. Dark berry flavors and a little spice. The same floral aroma we enjoyed in our 2005, but this wine is more lush. Intense, balanced and already complex and it will be even better 10 or 15 years from now.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Lagier Meredith:

About Lagier Meredith:

Lagier Meredith makes only Syrah and they use only their own grapes. Their wine owes its character to the place where the grapes are grown. It is truly a vineyard wine. (Which is not to belittle Steve Legier's winemaking ability...he just knows when to intervene and when not to.)

The flavor of the wine is reminiscent of the Northern Rhône in its red berry and white pepper aromas, but it has more extract and body. It has intense flavor and deep color but, unlike some other red wines, where big color usually means big tannin, Lagier Meredith Syrah is not harshly tannic so it drinks well when it is young, but it is also expected to age well.
