Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 vintage of this wine was ranked #1 on the Wine Spectator's Top 10 Wines of 2008

Clos Apalta is a dark and deep inky purple red color. Still young, but opening towards ripe and expressive red fruit, such as plums, red cherries, dry figs and mocha notes. Sweet spices such as vanilla and clover touch towards the finish. With a concentrated structure, this wine has a around and packed attack followed by a pack of velvety and polished tannins filling the mid palate and a ripe and rich long lasting finish.

Blend: 78% Carmenere, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot

Straw yellow in color with greenish highlights, and a delicate bouquet. This is a wine to be enjoyed young when one can best appreciate its zesty fruitiness.

Refreshing and soft with a smooth, dry finish, this versatile Pinot Grigio is a great choice for any occasion, but ideal with hors d'ouvres, soups and fish.

On the palate it is a medium to full bodied style with generous stonefruit and citrus flavors and a very smooth, yet generous finish.

My Notes:

About Snoqualmie:

Snoqualmie Vineyards embodies the spirit of the Northwest in personality and in its approach to winemaking. Snoqualmie's honest, yet eclectic style is largely a reflection of winemaker Joy Andersen, at the helm since 1990. Under Joy's leadership, Snoqualmie’s reputation for crafting approachable, food-friendly wines has been recognized across the country by critics and consumers alike.

Snoqualmie has been producing classic varietal wines from Columbia Valley vineyards for over two decades. Snoqualmie's vineyards lie within three distinct growing regions of the Columbia Valley: Wahluke Slope, Yakima Valley and Horse Haven Hills. Each area produces grapes with flavors unique to the area, and Joy considers the individuality of each growing region one of her strongest winemaking tools.

Styled for easy drinking and as a complement to food, the Columbia Valley tier wines are as welcome on a picnic table as they are on a linen tablecloth.

Rosebud Vineyard, on the Wahluke Slope, one of the warmest areas in the state, was planted in 1981 and is one of the original vineyards for Snoqualmie wines. As of 1991 Snoqualmie has an exclusive contract with Rosebud Vineyards. It is the source for their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Snoqualmie's reserve wines are made a barrel at a time using artisan winemaking techniques. Quantities are extremely limited.

Winemaker's Notes:

"This two-region Zin is from Atlas Peak and Amador County. It shows a really great Zin quality in the leathery spiciness that accompanies the berry flavors, and in the smooth, polished tannins. Amador seems to bring wildness, while Napa brings elegance. The result is a great Zinfandel at a great price."
-Wine Enthusiast

Antique Vines Zinfandel is a blend of two "Antique Vine" vineyards–one on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley, the other in Amador County located in the Sierra Foothills.

The term "antique" is characterized by excellence, appeal and importance. For us the name "Antique Vines" reflects our elevated esteem and reverence for old vineyards. The name demonstrates the endurance and quality of fruit the vines produce.

This Zinfandel opens with aromas of mature fruit and sandalwood which lead to ripe berry flavors sweetened with creamy vanilla nuances. This wine is big, rich, dense, and nicely balanced.

My Notes:

About Villa Mt. Eden:

Villa Mt. Eden is one of the few wineries established around the 1880s that exists today, among the good company of Beringer, Chateau Montelena and Far Niente.

Under former winemaker, Mike McGrath’s, 25 years of leadership, Villa Mt. Eden earned five placements on Wine Spectator’s annual “Top 100” and many best value accolades. Villa Mt. Eden also moved production facilities up the road on the Silverado Trail. In 2009 McGrath’s longtime assistant winemaker Armando de Santiago took the helm as winemaker at Villa Mt. Eden, placing renewed focus on Villa’s enduring mission to showcase distinguished regions and vineyards of California. With his unique background in philosophy and naturopathy, as well as winemaking, Armando is in many ways a natural fit for Villa Mt. Eden. This modern day Renaissance man’s passion for crafting elegant wines with fruit intensity and a focus on place, is ideally suited to guiding this acclaimed winery into its next chapter.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Valley of the Moon Winery:

About Valley of the Moon Winery:

Valley of the Moon Winery encompasses both the rich history and the innovative spirit of California wine.

Situated in the Sonoma Valley on land first planted to grapes in 1863, Valley of the Moon Winery is housed in a beautifully restored stone and redwood winery built in 1887. Blessed with rich volcanic soils and a distinctive “banana belt” microclimate, the estate vineyard has been a revered source of grapes for well over a century. A block of “old vine” Zinfandel planted in the 1940s is complemented by more recent plantings of Barbera, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah; all farmed sustainably with natural soil amendments and natural pest controls.

Yet Valley of the Moon Winery is a thoroughly modern - even cutting-edge - producer. The state-of-the-art production facility features a full complement of temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters, and small French and American oak barrels; ideal for Valley of the Moon’s artisan winemaking. In addition to making superb Sonoma County Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, Valley of the Moon Winery is a leader among California wineries in the production of several exciting up-and-coming wines: Syrah, Sangiovese, Pinot Blanc, Rosato di Sangiovese and Cuvée de la Luna, a proprietary Bordeaux-inspired blend. Sometimes hard to find, Valley of the Moon wines are definitely worth the search.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Jade Mountain 2004 Napa Valley Syrah is a serious wine with both intensity and character. We included small portions of Viognier, Carignane, and Grenache in the blend, to give the wine a touch of exotic charm and balance. After harvesting the fruit for the 2004 Napa Valley Syrah, we gave it a three to four day cold soak, keeping each lot separate. This was followed by a high temperature fermentation (88°F to 92°F), after which the grapes were allowed to rest on the skins for about 21 days.

This 2004 Syrah shows black cherry and cassis aromas, with hints of toasty wood. Big flavors of chewy coffee and black fruit are followed by a rolling chocolate finish. This intense wine pairs well with game birds, lamb and spicy barbecued ribs.

We sourced the majority of the fruit for the 2004 Napa Valley Syrah from two Napa Valley vineyards. Juliana Vineyard in Pope Valley provided deep, inky-colored and fully ripened fruit. Clarke Vineyard in the southernmost section of Napa in American Canyon supplied grapes with cool climate finesse, black cherry aromas and dense, dark chocolate flavors

"A rich, savory, supple-textured wine, with spicy wild berry amid hints of game meat, sage and herb. Ends with a vivid blueberry flavor that's distinct and captivating."
-Wine Spectator

My Notes:

About Jade Mountain:

Since 1988, Jade Mountain has been a pioneer in the production of Rhône-style California wines. The winery was founded with the belief that carefully chosen California vineyard sites planted to Rhône grape varieties can achieve quality on a par with the best from France and Australia.

Paras Vineyard, Jade Mountain's flagship vineyard, rests on the upper slopes of Mount Veeder, overlooking the Napa Valley. With rocky vine terraces and eastern exposures reminiscent of the finest Northern Rhône vineyards, Paras Vineyard grows Syrah and other Rhône grapes of truly exciting quality. From this and other select vineyards, Jade Mountain creates Syrah, Mourvèdre, Viognier and a proprietary southern Rhône-style blend called La Provençale

Jade Mountain uses only the highest-quality grapes and practices traditional winemaking techniques to produce wines displaying intense fruit and spice and silky smoothness on the palate. These wines are appealing in their youth as well as eminently age-worthy.
