Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage has yielded a broad and inviting expression of our Decoy Red Wine, with classic Napa Valley fruit notes and a silky, mouthcoating mid-palate. The aromas spotlight layers of mocha, mulberry and cassis with a subtle, yet sophisticated hint of cigar box. On the palate, this wine is soft and appealing with abundant flavors of blackcurrant, plum, hazelnut and licorice.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Decoy:

About Decoy:

Since the inaugural vintage of Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine more than 20 years ago, Decoy has taken an important place in the Duckhorn Wine Company family of wines. With a reputation for delivering great quality at a remarkable price, Decoy has established a loyal following for its distinctive style, which emphasizes ready-upon-release wines that are capable of expressing their full charm and complexity in their youth. Building on this foundation, Decoy has evolved from being a single wine that supported the Duckhorn Vineyards brand to being a supporting brand for the entire Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio.

Today, in addition to the Decoy Red, the Decoy lineup includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc—all of which are appellation-designated, and highlight Decoy’s commitment to producing attractively priced wines made from exceptional vineyard sources.

Because of Duckhorn Wine Company’s unique structure, Decoy benefits from the talent, experience and expertise of all four Duckhorn Wine Company winemakers, each of whom has a unique area of specialization. Like all the grapes used to make wines in the Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio, fruit for the Decoy program comes from a mix of Estate vineyards and top growers. Decisions about which lots are used in Decoy are not made until well into the winemaking process. As a result, Decoy’s grapes receive the same meticulous care in the vineyard, and the same small-lot attention to detail in the winery.

Wine Spectator rating: 88 points
PRICE ON 7/13/2014: $10.79

Winemaker's Notes:

It is always interesting and challenging to make a Riesling from a very different climate such as the wet and cool Willamette Valley. Because of the climate conditions, we have decided to pick the grapes for this wine early (at about 19 Brix) and craft the wine in a German Kabinett style.

The wine shows intense notes of apple, honey and grapefruit. This is a sweet wine with an incredible acidity and low pH . making it taste quite dry for its Residual Sugar. The wine has the potential to age for 30 years (if you are patient enough).

Try this wine with some dry fruits, some cheeses (goat cheeses are best), ice cream would also work wonders. This would also make a great aperitif.

The alcohol is 8.8%, acid is 0.84%, pH is 2.81 and Residual Sugar 5.2%

My Notes:

Additional wines from Pacific Rim:

About Pacific Rim:

Riesling, simply, is the most versatile, complex and food-friendly of all the noble grapes. if you enjoy inspiring your palate, then Riesling is your ideal wine. No other varietal so purely expresses terroir. Washington's Columbia Valley - home of Pacific Rim - provies the ideal soils and climate for growing Riesling. Purity is at the core of Pacific Rim's winemaking philosophy. They exclusively use stainless steel tanks, allowing the true character of Riesling to speak for itself, they do not use malolactic fermentation and their wines are fermented only with native yeasts. Winemaker's Notes:

Staete Landt Estate is situated in the heart of the famous Rapaura area of Marlborough, New Zealand. The 52 acre Estate is made up of many individual parcels, including 6 Sauvignon Blanc. Each provides its own unique expression, delivering a range of intense and vibrant flavours. Vintage 2009 began with a warm and settled spring, although rain in December did impact on the flowering of the Sauvignon Blanc. As a result, the crop levels were ideal and well balanced. A lot of work on canopies was undertaken in January which paid off when we experienced rain during February. The open canopies and well balanced vines meant the fruit stayed clean and free from any disease threat. In March the temperatures were higher than average, although we experienced some very cool nights. The end result of these conditions meant the fruit was harvested at perfect physiological ripeness, with superb crisp, fresh acidity.

The 2009 Staete Landt sauvignon blanc is intensely aromatic with rose petals, orangeblossom and tropical fruit characters. In the mouth a soft velvety texture with abundant nectarines and crisp granny smiths, chalky/slaty characters and a round and elegant mineral finish. This wine is drinking well from now onwards but will increase in complexity and reward cellaring for up to 5 years.

My Notes:

About Staete Landt:

At Staete Landt they produce wine for the top end of the market, which is the segment of exclusive and (super) premium wines. With a team of passionate wine people they are highly committed to their land, its soils, their vines and their wines. They look after their vines and resources with great dedication in order to make wines that truly represent our unique terroir on the ‘Golden Mile’.

The ‘Golden Mile’ is the name given to a special strip of land in Marlborough located on the old riverbed soils in the sub region of Rapaura. This relatively small area of land has the most optimum wine growing conditions due to its unique microclimate. Some of the oldest and most famous Marlborough vineyards are planted in this area.

The intense ‘Rapaura’ flavors are nurtured in the winery, as they practice minimal winemakers intervention. This means they use the very best of traditional winemaking methods with the latest technology and their own passion for. The results are honest character wines with an old world texture and elegance.

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for this Pinot Noir were selected from Rochioli's many different vineyard sites. The wine possesses the typical Rochioli character and classic Russian River Valley charm. It displays full body and a silky texture finish with a firm and balanced structure. The blend is 70% Sweetwater vineyard, 8% Little Hill vineyard and 22% from different vineyards on Rochioli's property.

Deep red in color.

There is a black cherry jam nose intermixed with earth, smoke, violets and vanilla.

The wine is full-bodied, long and silky with flavors of black cherry and vanilla.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Castle Rock Pinot Noir is produced from grapes grown in Monterey County along the Central Coast of California, where the climate and soil quality provide excellent growing conditions for this Burgundian varietal. Here, the cooling air from Monterey Bay helps to produce a longer growing season for grapes, with extra grape-time on the vines leading to a characteristic depth of flavor in the wine. Our Pinot Noir is elegant and medium-bodied, offering aromas of cherry, tea and herbal spice. On the palate, the wine gives flavors of black cherry, plum and spice. It is smooth with a silky texture and mild tannins. This versatile food wine pairs well with lamb, chicken, veal, salmon and light

Winemaker's Notes:

Light garnet in color, fresh crushed raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries are all in the aroma of this bright, fruit-driven Pinot Noir, with a hint of cinnamon stick and spice in the background. On the palate, pomegranate and cranberry fruit have a zesty appeal, paired with the subtle, classic underbrush character that distinguishes Pinot Noir. Moderately light bodied, the soft tannins and fresh acidity strike a nice balance, creating a light fnish with red fruit and a touch of spice. Overall, this red wine shows genuine Californian winemaking at its best, with flavors that are approachable yet entertainingly complex.

Our 2009 Smoking Loon Pinot Noir gets its fresh character from a number of cool climate California growing regions, including Monterey, Anderson Valley, Santa Barbara, and pairs nicely with pork and savory sandwiches. Complex aromas of ripe cherries, violets and cedar are followed by flavors of perfectly ripe, firm black cherries and mixed red and black berries. Allspice and coffee notes complement a long, multi-faceted finish in this "True Sonoma Coast" Pinot Noir.
My Notes:

About Hartford Court:

Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast.

Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both.

The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of high-personality single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express the distinctive qualities inherent in each vineyard's terroir - the interplay of soil, slope, exposure and climate. The fruit is sourced from the Russian River Valley, Green Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.
