Winemaker's Notes:

This first-class Morgon shows perfect balance and a sumptuous bouquet of black currant, plum, violets and old fashioned roses. Elegantly smooth on the palate, revealing several layers of fresh red berries, especially cherries. The silky, prolonged finish signals completely ripened fruit.

The story behind a wine often mirrors very closely to that of an individual. For example, Jean Ernest Descombes, an immensely engaging and historical figure of our Beaujolais region, devoted thirty years of his life to creating one of the finest estates and wines in Morgon. High-spirited and known for never turning down a good time, he welcomed wine reviewers and wine-tasting professionals to come and savor some of his fantastic wines. Those who met the unusual man never forgot the intense passion he had for his craft.

An extraordinary grower, he deployed his talents in the vineyard as well as in wine making. Three-fourths of his vines are more than 50 years old, planted in the best locations, such as the favored climates of La Py, La Roche, La Pillée, Les Pillets and Bellvue. The amazing wines produced at this estate have garnered an impressive list of awards.

After Jean Ernest's departure to the "vineyard of paradise" in October 1993, his daughter, Nicole, took over with an enthusiasm that would have warmed her father's heart. In tribute, she likes to say that the personality of a wine always conjures up the person who made it. Her father's wine is anything but an exception to this axiom. Such blissful encounters with Morgon reflect flashes of eternity to those fortunate enough to taste it.

My Notes:

About Georges Duboeuf:

For over 40 years Georges Duboeuf has been the Beaujolais region's most renowned négociant and is today regarded in the wine world as the "King of Beaujolais." Born in 1933 in Pouilly-Fuissé, the son of a winegrower, Georges began selling his family's wines from the back of his bicycle to now-legendary local chefs such as Paul Bocuse and Paul Blanc. In 1964, Georges realized his dream and founded his own company: Les Vins Georges Duboeuf.

Over the years, Georges has developed long-standing relationships with the region's top growers and winemakers. Georges is involved in every aspect of his enterprise and is known for his passion and his legendary palate. In 2003, the Duboeuf family opened a new, modern winery in Romanéche-Thorins. The following year, the Duboeuf and Deutsch families jointly purchased Château des Capitans in Juliénas. With annual sales of 30 million bottles, Georges Duboeuf is one of the world's best-known French brands.

Winemaker's Notes:

With a single holding of more than 330 acres at Guebwiller, Domaines Schlumberger is the largest Grands Crus producer in Alsace. All Schlumberger wines are estate-grown. Seventy five percent of the vines are planted on very steep, terraced slopes, requiring horses be used for field work. The outstanding quality of the wines is due largely to Schlumberger's superior vineyards, but also because yields are deliberately kept low.

With a base of red sandstone, the Kitterle's permeable soil also includes plenty of quartz mixed with sand and gravel. This combination results in extremely rich wines and a very low yield.

The Pinot Gris, previously called Tokay d'Alsace, is one of the oldest Alsace grapes. The varietal is characterized by buttery, smoky aromas and powerfully intense flavors.

A fruity wine offering a subtle, complex bouquet with honey aromas. Luscious fruit flavors accented with cream, vanilla and almond. Good natural acidity. An elegant and supple wine, it is suitable for all occasions. Enjoyable now, but can easily be kept 6-8 years.

Additional wines from Domaines Schlumberger:

About Domaines Schlumberger:

Domaines Schlumberger only harvests grapes from their own vineyards and are entirely dedicated to quality, which is achieved through deliberately producing very restricted yields per hectare.

The planting and judicious choice of grape varieties, pruning the vines, constantly surveying the grapes as they ripen, and the precious care that they are given enable a strict selection to be made during harvesting. Each plot, or even each bunch of grapes, will only be picked if it is completely ripe.

Winemaker's Notes:

With floral and crushed red cherry aromas, the wine shows full-bodied, ripe, mineral-driven fruit on the palate, with tangy undertones and a note of white pepper. The wine has a fresh, lip-smacking fruit character and an easygoing, uncomplicated nature that makes it pair well with a variety of dishes. The wine has acidity and tannins that are ripe but firm; this is no wimpy rosé. This hearty rosé is a winner.

Pairs best with salads, quiche, grilled vegetables, fish, chicken and Asian cuisine.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Paul Jaboulet and Aine:

About Paul Jaboulet and Aine:

Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been a trend-setting grower and shipper in the Rhône since 1834. The Jaboulet company was founded by Antoine Jaboulet, and his twin sons, Paul and Henri continued to expand the family business. The elder son ("aîné" in French), Paul, established the company in its present form and gave it his own name. Since then, the company has been run by successive generations of sons from that side of the Jaboulet family.

The House of Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the Rhône’s most recognizable wineries. The reputation of Jaboulet wines rests on the quality of the well-situated and well-tended vineyards, on low yields, careful vinification, and diligent aging in oak casks. The Jaboulet family prefers carefully integrated oak aging, in which the influence of wood is never allowed to become excessive. Since this is an important point, they have their own cooper who makes and maintains their stock of barrels.

Jaboulet wines symbolize robustness and elegance, essential qualities of great wines. Their crown jewel is their Hermitage "La Chapelle" which Clive Coates states "is one of the great red wines of the world." Thomas Matthews of Wine Spectator has singled out Jaboulet as a producer which "offers reliable wines across the entire range of appellations (in the northern and southern Rhône)."
