PRICE ON 7/26/2014: $12.99

ratings pedigree (past vintages):
2000 Wine Spectator rating: 86 points
1999 International Wine Cellar rating: 86 points

Winemaker's Notes:

NO WIMPY WINES! has been the rally cry for Ravenswood for decades, and the 2008 Vintners Blend Zinfandel fully embodies this uniquely Ravenswood mandate. It's a robust yet accessible wine with aromas of red raspberry and toasty oak that give way to seriously mouth-watering flavors of cherry and boysenberry. Notes of warm spice and layers of fruit are perfectly balanced with good acidity and soft, supple tannins.

Fruit for the 2008 Vintners Blend Zinfandel was sourced from premium lots in multiple regions of California. Imminently drinkable, this Zinfandel is a go-to bottling for impromptu entertaining. Pair with bold foods like spiced ribs, barbequed chicken, and juicy burgers off the grill — because Ravenswood Zinfandel is anything but wimpy.

Blend: 77% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignane

About Ravenswood:

Fueled initially by the inspiration and winemaking skills of Joel Peterson, aided and abetted by his business partner W. Reed Foster, Ravenswood winery has been dedicated to top quality, hand-crafted wine since the first crush in 1976. Every Ravenswood wine carries a unique vintage and vineyard identity in addition to the intense powerful – gothic – character with which the winery has come to be associated.

A key to Ravenswood’s success is our long-standing relationships with over 60 independent grape growers. Vineyards are chosen for their location, age, yield and special flavor characteristics. At Ravenswood, we are devoted to working with growers who share our philosophy about high quality.

Ravenswood Vineyard Designate wines are made employing what winemaker Joel Peterson refers to as “stubborn and impractical” Old World enological practices. Wines are fermented in small wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and punched down by hand three to five times per day. The wines are characterized by intense, spicy aromas supported by rich, berry flavors and long, clean finishes.

Additional wines from Parducci:

About Parducci:

Sixteen year-old Adolph Parducci arrived in Northern California with his parents in 1912. The new immigrant family settled in Mendocino County an area that resembled their native Tuscany. Even today, the geography and climate of Mendocino County are similar to Northern Italy. The County's hillside vineyards provide plenty of exposure to ripen hearty red grape varieties, while deep river valleys with good drainage support flavor-packed white grapes. Adolph purchased his first vineyard in 1921, just one-year after Prohibition. To survive, Parducci created a market for his grapes with home winemakers from as far away as New York. Adolph and his four sons built their full-scale winery in 1932 on the site of their original Home Ranch just above the Ukiah Valley.

In 1944, Parducci produced one of the first varietal bottling of California Zinfandel. This wine signaled the arrival of California as a premium winegrowing area and of Parducci Wine Cellars as the producer of quality wines. Two years later, we made the first varietal bottling of California Petite Sirah and today we are still the largest producer of Petite Sirah with just over 20,000 cases.

Parducci is "Family Farmed," locally owned and operated in California's Mendocino County. We are committed to sustainable winegrowing practices that yield top quality grapes and wines while protecting the environment and supporting our community and local farmers.

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright raspberry and cranberry fruit aromas mingle with earthy anise characters. Orange peel and tobacco accent flavors of blueberry and dark cherry. Notes of chocolate and vanilla compliment the fruit and interact nicely with the soft tannins and natural acidity of the wine.

Try pairing with an earthy Portobello Mushroom ravioli.

About Vine Hill Winery:

There is something really satisfying about seeing a long-held dream unfolding before your eyes. Such is the circumstance in which Nick Guerrero, Managing Partner of Vine Hill Winery finds himself. Nick and his team have embarked on a journey that continues a long tradition of winemaking in the historic Vine Hill Wine District. Established in 1867 by George and John Jarvis the wine district housed the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company of which John Jarvis was the president until his death in 1892. Jarvis also founded Union Vineyard in 1877. It is this historic site that is today's Vine Hill Winery.

Nick sees himself as the team's "coach." He lets each individual create their own template for success and is always there to lend a guiding hand as needed. "Putting other's first" was not always Nick's mantra, but as he has evolved, so has his opinion on managing people. He believes that the winery environment engenders an individual's reach for excellence and the ability to collaborate for the common good. Nick understands that this opportunity cannot always be seized in larger, corporate environments, or on the manufacturing room floor. That is why he feels extremely lucky to be surrounded by such outstanding individuals in an environment where their greatest success is celebrating great winemaking and all the efforts that support this goal.

The uniqueness of Passo Doble starts with the distinctive blend of Malbec and Corvina that has undergone 'appassimento', or drying of the grapes. A full bodied wine with layers of plum and spice and a finish of cherry, Passo Doble pairs well with grilled or roasted meats and strong flavored cheeses.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Masi:

About Masi:

Masi's production strategy aims to emphasize the personality of each single product, while maintaining a recognizable Venetian style. In 1958, Masi was in the forefront of the work to identify the historic "cru" vineyard sites for Amarone. In 1964, Campofiorin was the first in a new category of wines, reinventing the technique of double fermentation and continually updating it. Masi has also updated the style of Amarone, using new appassimento and vinification technologies.

Masi wines are modern, attractive, well-balanced and easily identifiable; characteristics which have earned Masi recognition for having "revolutionized the art of wine-making in the Venetian region." Hugh Johnson defines Masi as "a touchstone for Veronese wines."

Mary's Vineyard is a warm place to grow aromatic whites and I have been pleased with the balance of ripe fruit and acidity in the grapes from this vineyard. The wine is fermented entirely in stainless steel, with no oak—I like my white wines clean and refreshing. It is unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc with hints of minerality, yet also boasts warm Napa Valley floral and tropical aromas with white peach and orange blossom flavors complimented by a round mouthfeel and touch of citrus on the finish.

Bold and rich flavors fill the mouth with ripe wild berries and mocha; another great example of the complexity and unique flavors and aromas that can only come from field blending.

Additional wines from Mitolo:

About Mitolo:

In a short period of time Mitolo has become recognized as one of the finest producers in McLaren Vale. Mitolo is a family owned business, started by and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo's vision to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with a zealous passion that spares no effort to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of purity, elegance and power.

Italian family roots inspired Frank's early interest and enthusiasm for good food and great wine. With three earlier generations of his family working as agriculturists and entrepreneurs, it is not surprising that (while heading an international horticultural business), Frank found the energy and passion to pursue his dream of creating world-class wines. The business was established in 1999 and a year later the first Mitolo wine was launched. It was called G.A.M.; named after Frank’s three children and the next generation of Mitolo’s, Gemma, Alexander and Marco.

Acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer is a partner in the business and the combination of his winemaking skills and Frank’s vision have led Mitolo to international recognition and acclaim. What started out as a dream is becoming an exciting reality, and Mitolo Wines has only just begun on its journey.
