Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit-laden 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers a luscious bouquet of dark fruit including blackcurrant, black cherry, and blackberry layered over aromas of sweet vanilla and baking spices. Approachable cherry and cocoa notes lead to a wine of intense concentration, with flavors of dried plums and cola laced with hints of tobacco. Generous weight and mouth-filling velvet tannins frame a finish that lingers with flavors of dark cherry and cassis.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Franciscan Oakville Estate:

About Franciscan Oakville Estate:

Franciscan is one of Napa Valley's most venerable wineries, reaching back more than three decades. Franciscan wines take their signature style - rich, vibrant flavors framed by supple tannins - from the ideal climate offered by Napa Valley's cool, southern half and from the time-honored tradition of small-lot winemaking, blending from hundreds of barrels to craft fine wines that fully express the classic Bordeaux varieties.

Franciscan was founded in 1972 by a group of lawyers and doctors from San Francisco who decided to try turning their passion for wine into a business. In 1985, Agustin Huneeus, a Chilean exile who had built Concha y Toro in his native country, took over the helm at Franciscan. Huneeus refocused the winery on using the superlative grapes growing in its own vineyards, rather than sourcing from outside.

Today, Franciscan's wines are crafted under the exacting eye of Janet Myers, who came to Franciscan in August 2003 as associate winemaker after working in the Margaret River region and Beaulieu Vineyard, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Louis Martini. The winery remains committed to its tradition of small-lot winemaking, with small batches averaging just 150 to 1,500 cases. The image of a hand-operated wine press on Franciscan's logo and wine labels reflects this small lot approach to winemaking.

Pale lemon with green tints, the wine has a floral aroma with distinctive lime notes. The refreshing lime flavors carry through on the palate which has a zesty freshness, a steely minerality and a strikingly clean finish. With careful cellaring, it will continue to develop and honey in the bottle for a further five to ten years.

Winemaker's Notes:

2008 in the Barossa will be remembered as a difficult year due to a heat spike during vintage. Daily monitoring of fruit quality and flavor development was extremely important. Smart canopy management resulted in good, albeit extremely limited, quality.

It was once the tradition of a small group of Barossa pioneers to retreat to the cool stone depths of an old vineyard cottage. Here they would while away many hours playing cards and drinking wine away from the critical eyes of puritanical souls. The cottage still stands among the vines that produce this wine, a flavorful, aromatic drink that always 'comes up trumps!'

My Notes:

Additional wines from Cimicky:

About Cimicky:

Czech immigrant Karl Cimicky founded Karlsburg Winery in 1973. In the early 90’s Karl's son Charles began to take a keen interest in winemaking and the ‘good’ wines started turning into awesome wines. In addition to top of the line fermenters and barrels, Cimicky also has an estate bottling line, something of a rarity in Australia, allowing him to personally control all facets of production. Charles Cimicky produces rich, voluptuous, generous wines with superb balance. Apart from minor drip irrigation in January and February, the vines are dry grown, cover-cropped and organically fertilized. Now in his late forties Charles Cimicky is one of the most quality-driven, meticulous winemakers in South Australia.

Winemaker's Notes:

A deep crimson red, The Scribbler 2009 shows excellent concentration and lift on the nose, with redcurrant fruits, spices and licorice complementing fresh floral aromatics of herbs and mints. This is a densely weighted wine with blackcurrant fruit and dark berries. The Shiraz is again nicely layered within a tightly integrated and beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon palate. Perfect to drink now, but will certainly cellar well over the next five to 10 years.

Pair with Beef Wellington. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Winemaker's Notes:

Made with full extraction and long skin contact, this wine is made to maximize body and weight while having long silky tannins. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of ripe dark cherry and blackberry notes with mocha, clove and a hint of vanilla. This wine offers lush, juicy cherry and blueberry flavors. On the palate, sweet vanilla, clove, and a hint of cinnamon are brought forth by the nuances of French oak aging. Seamless with a nice long finish, this wine is very elegant with a fine structure.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Atlas Peak Winery:

About Atlas Peak Winery:

Atlas Peak was established in 1987. Over time it became clear that Atlas Peak's most valuable hidden resource was literally underfoot: the elevation of its vineyards. The grapes growing at high elevation, and above the natural fog line, experience much lower daytime temperatures than those on the valley floor, allowing the grapes to stay cool while gaining maximum sun exposure. As a result, growers up on the mountain can afford to harvest later and pick for flavor with less worry about over ripening and excessive alcohol. No grape develops as well in mountain conditions as Cabernet Sauvignon.

Atlas Peak crafts Napa Valley mountain appellation Cabernet Sauvignon from such prestigious areas as Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain District and Mount Veeder, in addition to Atlas Peak. Atlas Peak’s Cabernet Sauvignon wines are driven by an appreciation of mountain-grown fruit and winemaking techniques that capture the distinct flavors derived from the mountain appellations in which they are grown.

Albamar pays homage to the Casablanca Valley's foggy sunrise ("alba" means sunrise) and the cooling breezes of the ocean ("mar" means ocean).

This wine shows excellent fresh fruit character and flavors of meyer lemon and crisp apple. It is bone dry and very food friendly.

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose is full of blackcurrant and blueberry characters with a lovely mint leaf lift and a spicy undertone. The characters are ripe, yet remain balanced with touches of florals adding elegance.

Dark plum and red fruits are added to the mix before a savoury mid palate emerges with soil characters, hints of coffee, black olive and more spice framed well by fine gravelly tannins and just a hint of oak. Considering the vintage conditions the generous fruit flavor is surprisingly well balanced by soil characters, flowers and leafy lift along with good tannin structure.

Like all d'Arenberg wines decanting will help this wine show its true colours and it will age gracefully in the cellar for up to seven years.

My Notes:

Additional wines from d'Arenberg:

About d'Arenberg:

One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d'Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently. The original vineyards were established by Joseph Osborn in 1912 in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. A century on, the estate has grown to 345 acres, and the mantle now rests with fourth-generation winemaker, Chester Osborn. By maintaining a focus on traditional winemaking and nurturing their old-vine material, the Osborn clan has successfully established themselves as one of the country's leading producers of concentrated wines that are full of character.

Additional wines from Mitolo:

About Mitolo:

In a short period of time Mitolo has become recognized as one of the finest producers in McLaren Vale. Mitolo is a family owned business, started by and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo's vision to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with a zealous passion that spares no effort to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of purity, elegance and power.

Italian family roots inspired Frank's early interest and enthusiasm for good food and great wine. With three earlier generations of his family working as agriculturists and entrepreneurs, it is not surprising that (while heading an international horticultural business), Frank found the energy and passion to pursue his dream of creating world-class wines. The business was established in 1999 and a year later the first Mitolo wine was launched. It was called G.A.M.; named after Frank’s three children and the next generation of Mitolo’s, Gemma, Alexander and Marco.

Acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer is a partner in the business and the combination of his winemaking skills and Frank’s vision have led Mitolo to international recognition and acclaim. What started out as a dream is becoming an exciting reality, and Mitolo Wines has only just begun on its journey.
