Winemaker's Notes:

Color: Dark red to black, with great intensity. Nose: An intense, rich bouquet led by ripe cassis and berry fruits. Behind the primary fruit are distinctive vineyard characters of dark chocolate and mint.

Palate: This vineyard consistently produces intense, fleshy and full mid-palate Cabernet with massive fruit weight displaying dark cherry and blackcurrant flavors. This is a big full wine with ample flavor and concentration. Aging: Medium to long term cellaring possible.

My Notes:

About Hay Shed Hill:

Michael Kerrigan, formally the Chief Winemaker of Howard Park and MadFish Wines for the previous 12 years and a small group of partners took over the Hay Shed Hill vineyard and brands just before Christmas 2006.

"I knew the Hay Shed Hill vineyard and its potential could not pass up an opportunity to be part of such an exciting winery that is producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon wines as good as or better than any wine producer in Margaret River – and that means world class wine.

I believe that small, old, hands-on vineyards and wineries like Hay Shed Hill need to be owned and run by winemakers and grape growers; people who are attached to the land and the place and wish to express its character through the wine."

In a highly corporatized wine world we've seen highly visual wine companies 'huff & puff' with huge volume expectations with more press in the business news than favorable reviews in the wine columns. In the end corporations shouldn't run boutique wine businesses.

Winemaker's Notes:

The aroma of this beautiful bright Pinot Noir offering has cherry blossom floral with ripe red cherry, raspberry jam, and spice laden vanilla bean complexities. The color is a cheerful ruby red and is extremely inviting. The flavors are red fruited, red cherry folded into Vosges forest oak spice of nutmeg and earth. The facula for this refreshing Pinot Noir is red currant, a first for my 23 years of Oregon winemaking! The cellar was chock full of wonderful, red raspberry aromas during fermentation in 2007. This wine is one to enjoy but seriously cellar, as it is red fruit freshness that lends age-ability.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to highlight the best qualities of our five estate vineyards. Dark rich and extracted this wine has aromas of cassis, black cherry and currants. Balanced oak nuances add both a 'sweetness' and roundness to this aromatic and powerful wine. Extraordinarily complex, while amazingly rich and smooth in the mouth, offers superb richness and balance. Builds in intensity. The huge finishing fruit coats the entire palate.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Dominus:

About Dominus:

In the late 1960s, while attending the University of California at Davis, Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines. Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the famed wine merchant and producer from Libourne, France, Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards, including Chateaux Petrus, La Fleur-Petrus, Trotanoy in Pomerol and Magdelaine in Saint Emilion.

His love of Napa Valley lingered and in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership to develop the vineyard and, in 1995, became its sole owner. He chose the name 'Dominus' or 'Lord of the Estate' in Latin to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land.

Complex aromas of ripe cherries, violets and cedar are followed by flavors of perfectly ripe, firm black cherries and mixed red and black berries. Allspice and coffee notes complement a long, multi-faceted finish in this "True Sonoma Coast" Pinot Noir.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Hartford Court:

About Hartford Court:

Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast.

Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both.

The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of high-personality single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express the distinctive qualities inherent in each vineyard's terroir - the interplay of soil, slope, exposure and climate. The fruit is sourced from the Russian River Valley, Green Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.

Winemaker's Notes:

#42 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010

Deep blackish red. Dark brooding fruit aromas of black cherry, boysenberry with florals, truffle and tar. The palate is silkily structured, with layered fine tannins giving a texture of silk and rose petals. Flavors of the same black fruits and florals, backed with mushroom, bark, fennel and other spices. Dense yet elegant and poised. The finish gradually unwinds revealing bright red berry and violets.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Craggy Range Winery:

About Craggy Range Winery:

From the beginning, Craggy Range Winery has some great land and vineyards and a wonderful home in which to weave the strands together. The first wines made in the 1999 vintage are from small parcels of mature vineyards in Marlborough and Hawkes Bay. The wines show the character of the vineyards and the Craggy Range philosophy of wine both inside and outside the bottle. In time, as the vines mature on their own estates, the wines of Craggy Range Winery will without doubt express their origin and the commitment and skill of their people.

Deep garnet color. Luxurious and dynamic aromas of ripe strawberry, bright cherry and faint notes of spicy oak and vanilla. The complexity of the palate smoothly layers rich red currant notes and baking spice flavors with light smoke, earth and leather. A balanced, velvety texture and supple tannins carry the wine through to a lingering, succulent finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Meiomi:

About Meiomi:

The name Meiomi means "coast" in the language of the native, coastal dwelling Wappo and Yuki tribes, and best pays tribute to and symbolizes the origin of this Pinot Noir. Meiomi is a high style Pinot Noir that is shaped, more than anything else, by the fruit sources that lay the foundation of the blend. A pure bred enjoyment wine, built to accommodate any pairing from food to friends. Unifying California’s most noteworthy coastal areas opens the door for a dynamic and opulent wine that is ready to enjoy whenever you are.

Joseph J. Wagner is a fifth-generation winemaker from a family with farming and winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since the 1880's. In his youth, he worked many spring and summer days in the vineyard and cellar of Caymus, learning the basics from pulling leaves, to dragging hoses. Then he began to focus his efforts on what was to become his passion and career in the wine business. He is the owner of Belle Glos and Meiomi wines and has been overseeing vineyard operations and winemaking since 2002. Joseph has a perpetual goal of crafting Pinot Noirs that exude their origins and represent the best of their class in any vintage. Along with his passion for Pinot Noir, he continues his role at Caymus in viticulture and winemaking alongside his father, Chuck. When not at work, he spends time with his wife and 5 children constantly grooming the next generation in farming philosophy and practices, winemaking and the enjoyment of nature's bounty and the outdoors.

Winemaker's Notes:

At less than six miles from the Pacific Ocean and subject to sometimes ruthless fog and winds, the Taylor Lane Vineyard can make growing grapes an act of faith.

To achieve full maturity at this coastal site, we paired the early-ripening Dijon clones with an adapted traditional Italian trellis system that carries the vine shoots across a nearly horizontal canopy. The trellis acts as a solar panel for maximum ripening and permits dappled sunlight throughout the day and excellent air circulation to the fruit; its height also lets us graze sheep for weed control.

Dense, dark ruby color. The aromas of dense berry pie filling, bright cherry and light smoke notes saturate the nose. The flavors are abundant yet extremely focused and refined...cherries, chocolate, caramel… this is an excellent food wine with a full mouth feel and balanced acidity leading to a long finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Belle Glos:

About Belle Glos:

Belle Glos showcases distinctive Pinot Noirs produced from top growing areas along the California coast: the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County; the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County; and the Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County. Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner is a fourth-generation winemaker from a family with farming and winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since 1906. The name Belle Glos (pronounced BELL GLOSS), honors Joseph’s grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, a co-founder of Caymus Vineyards.

Winemaker's Notes:

Clark & Telephone Vineyard, located near the corner of Clark Avenue and Telephone Road in the Santa Maria Valley, is cooled by wind and fog that snakes in from the Pacific Ocean along a channel of the Santa Maria River.

Established in 1972, the Clark & Telephone Vineyard was planted "own root" to the Martini clone. This heirloom clone of Pinot Noir, one of the first to grace the California coastlands, has become something of a lost treasure.

Scarlet in color; bursting with aromas of cinnamon, caramel and hints of ginger-spiced tea. On the palate, the plush weight coats the mouth with more brown spice and sweet oak flavors, layered into the deep blueberry and strawberry base. The viscosity paired with the flavors and lively acidity lead into a long finish with supple tannins.
