Winemaker's Notes:

This classic Carneros region Pinot Noir offers a wide range of flavors and aromas, in the tradition of the finest red Burgundies of France. "Clonal diversity" is achieved by carefully blending several vineyard lots, each retaining its own unique clonal signature in the blend. The result is a complex wine with a rich bouquet of cherries, berries and hints of spicy new oak. It has flavors reminiscent of black cherry, currant and strawberry, followed by a rich, spicy texture and a long silky finish.

This wine pairs nicely with lamb, duck, even grilled fish, and will improve with additional cellaring for 2 to 5 years.

About Schug Estate Winery:

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards).

Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart.

Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is classic Dry Creek Valley Cabernet.

At first swirl, deep aromas of raspberry, sage and dried floral elements come forward. On the palate, these aromas combine with black cherry and chocolate creating a mouthful of silky, well-integrated tannins. With some airing, the wine fleshes out even more providing dimension, depth and length. The finish lingers on for more than a minute with fine tannins that are very elegant and structured. Truly a blockbuster wine from an incredible vintage!

Additional wines from Dry Creek Vineyard:

About Dry Creek Vineyard:

In 1972, when David S. Stare opened the doors to Dry Creek Vineyard, it was the first new winery to be built in the Valley since Prohibition. Dry Creek created the first Sonoma Fume Blanc, originated the Dry Creek Valley AVA, and was an early advocate for Bordeaux-style blending.

Today, Dry Creek Vineyard is committed to vineyard diversity, vinifying individual lots of fruit separately, and then blending carefully for each final cuvee. Dry Creek Vineyard is also a leader in the stewardship of pre-Prohibition Zinfandel vines and vineyards, and has isolated a clone, called the "Heritage Clone," which is bottled separately from their "Old Vines" Zinfandel (containing wine only from vines no younger than 50 years old), and which has made very promising wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

Hidden Ridge 2007 55% Slope Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months in French oak, 85% new, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. A very deep ruby black color with aromatics of cedar, blackberry and spices. The flavors are richly textured with traces of black tea, mocha and anise and a creamy core of dark cherry fruit.
My Notes:

About Hidden Ridge:

Comprised of 55 acres of Cabernet and broken into 21 blocks, Hidden Ridge Vineyards is located in rugged terrain, between Mount Hood and Diamond Mountain on Mayacamas mountain range between Santa Rosa and St. Helena. At elevations ranging from 1200-1700 feet, their terraced vineyards fall between the range's saddles creating some of the most dramatic vineyard sites in Sonoma. Their closest neighbors are Pride & Paloma Vineyards.

"That's some good grape dirt up there," Oklahoma native and owner Lynn Hofacket points out eyeing his property. Adds winemaker Marco Di Giulio, "A vineyard so steep, so well developed, so interesting in its planning scheme and with so much vision behind it that I could not help but be blown away. I bring my other winemaker friends out there because I like to see the awed expressions on their faces. Yeah, it's really that amazing."

#61 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010

The Watcher. It is an image steeped in legend and mystery. It implies transcendence and authority. The Watcher is a being of knowledge, of understanding, of concern, of influence.

At Fetish Wines, we value this level of attention to every step of the winemaking process, from the soil to the bottle. We do not want to manipulate wine, but to craft it by the subtle direction that can only be achieved through an intimate relationship with the land.

For this wine, Rolf Binder is The Watcher

My Notes:

About Fetish:

Fetish Wine was introduced with the release of the 2004 vintage "The Watcher," a Barossa Valley Shiraz made by Rolf Binder at his acclaimed Veritas Winery. The brand combined high-quality wine, a prestigious appellation and a celebrity winemaker all wrapped up in cutting edge packaging.

Shortly after this initial release a new project came together, this time partnering with Wayne Dutschke to produce the "Field of Dreams" Barossa Moscato. This wine brought a new, and very different, facet of Australian winemaking into the Fetish portfolio. The distinctive blue bottle and colorful label contributed to the Fetish Wines theme of being consistently different.

2007 saw the second release of "The Watcher" Shiraz, which received an even greater reception in the USA marketplace than its initial release, and the introduction of "Playmates." An additional wine made for Fetish by Rolf Binder, "Playmates" is a Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro with eye-catching black-and-white artwork. The second release of "Field of Dreams" Moscato will be available before the end of the year.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 Brookman Cabernet Sauvignon, highlights the quality of the fruit that is produced from sixty-six year old vines, planted on their own roots in ironstone gravel. An inky wine, crimson in color. A classy perfumed aristocratic nose of pure Cabernet Sauvignon. Extraordinary aromas of black currents and high quality French oak scented bouquet. Elegant flavors of black fruits, smoky herbs, eucalyptus and vanilla.

Brookman Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are from vines planted in 1940 on their original rootstock. The unusually dry growing season resulted in even smaller yields than normal, under two tons per acre. All of the vines are dry-farmed and hand pruned. Picking took place over several passes to ensure optimal ripeness of the fruit. Grapes were hand picked in order to allow for whole berry fermentation. This process allows us to better retain the grape's varietal essence and minimize bitter tannin extraction in the wine. The juice is fermented using wild yeast; temperatures were kept 32 degrees Celsius with an extended maceration. All of the pressings are returned to the barrel. No fining or filtration is allowed ensuring the purest expression of the grape and vineyard that will age well and complement the dining experience. Brookman Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in barrels that are hand selected by the winemaker. The French barrels used are 100% new, tight-grained oak from Nadalie. Barrels are seasoned for three years before being toasted to medium char over a cool flame for several hours to minimize blistering. Brookman Cabernet Sauvignon spent 18 months in barrel. The resulting wine is extremely balanced and integrated; when decanted it is ready to consume now or can age for 15 years.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage was particularly smooth from start to finish. Budbreak arrived on schedule in the spring, and we saw lower than average rainfall. Healthy flowering led to a very even set, with few heat spikes during the season. Timely veraison and cooler weather later in the season allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and spend additional time on the vine. The Pinot Noir in Monterey lasted a full 8 weeks, beginning in September and lasting all the way into October. By all accounts, 2009 appears to be an outstanding vintage.

In the glass, brooding, earthy aromas meld with juicy ripe plum, punctuated by lovely notes of black tea. The palate echoes the plum-filled nose, joined by black licorice and cocoa powder. A subtle earthiness leads to a generous, fleshy mid-palate and a smooth, mineral-laced finish.

Additional wines from La Crema:

About La Crema:

Since 1979, La Crema Winery has been a pioneer in producing Burgundian varietals from the cool Sonoma coast. They handcraft their wine, one barrel at a time, at their family-owned estate located in the Russian River Valley. Balance, finesse and great fruit intensity come through in every glass of La Crema wine.

La Crema's location in the Russian River Valley is ideal for producing wines of uncompromising elegance and balance. To achieve this goal, several unique steps take place in getting fruit from the vineyards to the bottle. It begins in the vineyard, where careful canopy management and hand harvesting assure fully ripe, undamaged grapes are brought to the winery. At the winery, Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse uses artisan winemaking techniques to handcraft wines of distinctive flavor, elegance and balance.

Additional wines from Quinta do Vallado:

About Quinta do Vallado:

In the heart of Portugal’s most famous wine region – the Douro Valley – near the historical center of Regua, the Quinta do Vallado vineyards, winery and guest house spread across both banks of the Corgo River at the very point where it meets the Douro. With winemaking references that date back to 1716, the Quinta belonged to the legendary Portuguese vintner D. Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, and has remained in the family through modern times.

The current owners, Joao Ferreria Alvares Ribeiro, Francisco Ferreira and Francisco Olazabal, are the sixth generation of this remarkable family, and the family’s mission to produce some of the best still wines of this fertile valley continues with the red blends and varietals that are exported worldwide. Of the 38-hectare Estate, 26 hectares are filled with vines 60 years and older. It is from these vines that Quinta do Vallado’s Red Reserve and Touriga Nacional wines are made, so it is no wonder that the wines are often found to be rated and reviewed among the best wines from the Douro.
