Winemaker's Notes:

This is a great example of Mendoza Malbec. Incredible color—could use it in an inkwell! Lavender, spice and black cherry cola aromas with notes of cocoa and wood smoke. The berry flavors really pop on the palate as the wine has both good depth and very lively acidity that leads to an incredibly long fruit-filled finish. A bottom note of freshly brewed espresso keeps the mouth watering too. This one is a teenager at the moment, and should age very well (and not talk back when you don't give it the car keys!). Pairs well with foods such as venison or wild game, steak, pork, quail, all types of lamb, and medium-strong cheeses. A very flexible wine due to its concentration and balance.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Luca:

About Luca:

Laura Catena is a fourth generation winemaker who grew up in a traditional Argentine-Italian winemaking family in Mendoza. Laura splits her time between Mendoza and San Francisco, California, where she is an emergency physician, university professor and occasional tango dancer. Laura had the vision of creating a new breed of Argentine wines: small quantities, artisan quality, and true to their individual terroirs. A pioneer of small-grower relations in Mendoza, Laura's incredible, limited production wines come from some of Argentina's best fruit from low-yield, high-elevation, family-owned vineyards. The wines are named after her children - Luca, Dante and Nicola - and the background of the label is the McDermott coat of arms of her American husband, Daniel McDermott.

Maroon cherry red color. Aromas of jam and wood, spicy notes. This is a wine with character and persistance. A blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.

Accompanying roast meat or meat in sauce, stews and cured cheese.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Campo Viejo:

About Campo Viejo:

The old Campo Viejo wine cellar, founded in 1967, has given way to the Juan Alcorta Bodega, named after its founder. Located in Logroño, on the old road to Fuenmayor, the bodega is built on a plateau planted with vines and has panoramic views of the Ebro Valley and the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. It is situated right in the heart of La Rioja, the most prestigious growing region in Spain.

Whole grape clusters are 100% gravity fed, without undergoing any type of pressure, which could adversely affect the quality of the wine. This gentle, painstaking winemaking process makes it possible to obtain smooth, harmonious wines, with lots of concentrated fruit aromas and flavors.

#75 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2012

Attractive, vivid ruby red color. Intense, fragrant bouquet with a depth of blackberries, blackcurants, blueberries and vanilla. Deliciously full and complex in the mouth with silky smooth tannins. This reserva highlights the character of a unique vintage that is rich and structured, whilst combining the elegance of a splendid wine that promises to develop superbly over the next few years.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Marques de Caceres:

About Marques de Caceres:

Founded in 1970, with its first release in 1975, Marqués de Cáceres the Rioja bodega was established by Henri Forner, whose family has been active in the wine business for generations. The winery is named for a Spanish peer who was also an investor in the winery and a friend of Henri Forner.

The Forner family fled Spain during the Spanish Civil War and settled in France. In the early 1960s, Henri Forner and his brother Elysée bought and restored two abandoned châteaux, Château Camensac and Château Larose-Trintaudon. These châteaux are now recognized as two of the finest properties in Bordeaux. When Henri decided to establish a bodega in his homeland, he selected what he considered the finest viticultural area in Spain: Cenicero in Rioja Alta.

Emile Peynaud, former professor and chief wine researcher at the University of Bordeaux, was initial consultant to the winery. Today, Michel Rolland is wine consultant at Marqués de Cáceres and Henri and his daughter, Christine, are at the helm. The vinification methods at Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres are similar to those used in Bordeaux. Thus, French winemaking techniques and expertise have been applied to native Spanish grapes to produce one of the finest modern Riojas.

Winemaker's Notes:

A Champagne House is eventually judged on the quality of its Brut Non Vintage. It is in the making of such a wine that the true Art of Champagne blending reveals itself.

This is an art in which the House of Veuve Clicquot excels. Our Brut Yellow Label reflects the superb vineyards we own and the consistent nature of our House style.

The predominance of Pinot Noir provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, while a touch of Pinot Meunier rounds out the blend. Chardonnay adds the elegance and finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Veuve Clicquot:

About Veuve Clicquot:

The House was founded by Philippe Clicquot in 1772. Since its inception, Veuve Clicquot has been a specialist in Champagnes based on Pinot Noir, especially Rosé. In 1803, François Clicquot was married to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. Madame Clicquot was widowed just two years later. Veuve Clicquot (Veuve means widow in French) took over her husband's business. In 1810, the house took the name Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. The way that she ran her company, from risky overseas ventures to startling technological innovations, changed Champagne forever. Her motto is still the guiding principle of our company – "Only one quality – the finest."

In 1816, Mme. Clicquot invented the process, called rémuage or riddling, that removes the yeast from the bottle. She used holes cut in her kitchen table to perfect the method of slowly tilting and turning the bottles to gather the spent yeast in the neck of the bottle. Once settled it could be removed by freezing the neck in a brine of salt and water, removing it, and recorking.

The company was taken public in 1963, and merged with Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey in 1986. Today, Jacques Peters is the chief winemaker at Veuve Clicquot, and was appointed cellar master in 1985. He has undertaken an ambitious program since this time to upgrade the grape sources, improve the vineyards, and improve the cellars and production facilities.

Winemaker's Notes:

Very dark purple with lots of black hues. Big sweet nose (some may call it candified) of dark plums, black cherries, sweet smoky oak, tobacco, and funky tree bark. Forward gush of dark fruit that also has some helpful tangy red currants along with tobacco, smoke, and earth. Medium-low acid, soft tannins.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Bodegas Volver:

About Bodegas Volver:

The Spanish enologist, Rafael Cañizares seeks to achieve the maximum expression of the Tempranillo grape grown in the environment. This winery is located in the best terroir of La Mancha found in the eastern region of the Denomination of Origin. The soil is the reason that the winery committed themselves to purchasing 228 acres of vineyards with an average age of 40 years. Winemaker's Notes:

Delight in a spectacle of plum-raspberry aromas, very spicy and with a fruity retro-nasal aroma. With all of the sharpness and brilliance of its cherry red tones, and then in the mouth, this wine has a smooth and balanced passage with the great intensity of the fruit provided by its youth. Its aftertaste is long and pleasing.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Borsao:

About Borsao:

Founded in 1958 in the town of Borja, called Borsao in the 4th century B.C., this winery represents what can be done with Garnacha, a grape that is not well appreciated by the Spanish press. Through meticulous selection, work in the fields and at reception time in the winery, modern winemaking produces this highly fruity wine. One of the best examples of the region known as "The Garnacha land of Spain", the lower part of the Ebro River.

It should have been included on the Priorat appellation but was excluded. Can Blau is composed of 60 acres of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The soils are similar to Priorat with Montsant being a bit more complex with a mixture of slate (llicorella), sandy clay and chalk.
