Winemaker's Notes:

Ruby red with garnet hues. The impact of the Riserva Ducale Oro 2006 is intense. At a first approach, notes of cherry, plum and violet appear very powerful; subsequently it denotes strong aromas of tobacco, chocolate, cinnamon and black pepper. On the whole, this wine shows a very complex and powerful nose.

Full-bodied, very powerful in the fruity tastes, with tannins that are elegant and well linked to a good acidity. It is characterized by pleasant sensations of sweet tobacco. The finish is particularly long and shows powerful notes of plums and more light aromas of clove.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Ruffino:

About Ruffino:

In 1877, Illario and Leopoldo Ruffino laid the foundations of their dream to make the most known and loved Italian wines in the world from the heart of Tuscany. At their winery in Pontassieve, just outside of Florence, they began producing wines according to a strict quality standard and a rigorous technical research. Soon, Ruffino became an international symbol of the Chianti region, and won numerous awards, including the prestigious gold medal at the Bordeaux Wine Fair in 1895, affirming the quality of its wine.

In 1913, the Folonari family purchased Ruffino and brought new talent, energy and enthusiasm into the company. They started on a nearly century-long pursuit to develop a collection of estates in Tuscany, all of which matched the standard of quality and uniqueness which was the trademark of Ruffino wine.

Over the last sixty years, Ruffino has established seven prominent estates in Tuscany, all situated within the major DOCG production regions including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Today, Ruffino continues to meld century-long Tuscan traditions with new state-of-the-art cellar technology and modern winemaking for an ideal symbiosis with the energy of the contemporary Italian lifestyle.

Winemaker's Notes:

Chateau Paradis Casseuil Bordeaux Rouge is characterized by fresh, fruity flavors and floral aromas. In the mouth, the attack is rounded and hearty with prolonged red fruit and wild berries. This wine can be appreciated now or kept for a few years when it will have reached its peak and becomes more supple.
My Notes:

About Château Paradis Casseuil:

Château Paradis Casseuil gets its name from the combination of the cadastral name of the main parcel of vineyards called "Vines of Paradise" and the district of Casseuil.

Château Paradis Casseuil is a former dependence of Château Rieussec. It also underwent Rieussec’s troubled history in the 20th century. Taken under Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)’s wing in 1984, Château Paradis Casseuil’s cellars are located in the heart of the vineyard located in Sainte-Foy-la-Longue.

The Château Paradis Casseuil cellars, located in Sainte-Foy-la-Longue are used to vinify the red wines. White wines are vinified at Château Rieussec, benefiting from the same modern technical instruments used for the Grand Vin Château Rieussec.

The vineyard is located in the three districts of Casseuil, Caudrot, and Sainte-Foy-la-Longue in the appellation Entre-Deux-Mers. There are 23 hectares (57.5 acres) of vines including 17 hectares of red varietals on claylimestone soil at Caudrot and Ste-Foy, and clay and gravel soil at Casseuil. The red varietals are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% of Cabernet Franc. And the white varietals are 60% of Semillion, 20% of Muscadelle and 20% of Sauvignon blanc.

The wines of Château Paradis Casseuil are bottled in spring without ageing in oak barrels. This allows the wines to keep their freshness and the fruit. They can be enjoyed within 2 to 3 years after harvest.

Intense red garnet color with ocher hints. Intense and profound on the nose with fruity aromas such as cranberry and red curant. Slight touches of sweetness and cinnamon. Smooth and elegant in the mouth with a good balance between the red fruits and spices. Long finish. The perfect match for all types of red meats and cheeses.
My Notes:

About Bodegas Beronia:

Bodegas Beronia is found in the Rioja Alta area of the region which is situated to the west. In this area the soil is mainly calcareous clay soil and the vineyards are on average at an altitude of 600 metres. This area’s climatic infl uences are from the Atlantic however due to the Cantabria and Demanda mountain ranges it is sheltered from the worst Atlantic infl uences. It also boasts the Ebro river which creates a series of microclimates and provides much needed water for the vines. The situation of Bodegas beronia is considered to be a unique place for the creation of wines of high quality.

The grapes used at Beronia come from vineyards from within a tenmile radius of the cellars, ensuring that only the highest quality grapes enter the winery. A close relationship is maintained with the 150 vinegrowers who supply the grapes, guaranteeing that only the best quality grapes are selected and that the process is done so in the most natural way. Our technical experts frequently visit the estates to ensure that the use of fertilisers and chemicals are kept to a minimum. It is our priority to maintain healthy and high quality grapes.

Beronia, true to its tradition, produces a classic line of fi ne and well-balanced wines, crianza, reserva and gran reserva. In addition to these two white wines, a young Viura and a barrel fermented Viura. However they satisfy their innovative and avant-garde side with an interesting range of single variety wines, special production Tempranillo and Beronia Mazuelo reserva, making them the only winery in Rioja to produce a reserve wine from the Mazuelo grape.

Winemaker's Notes:

2011 Red Blend has dark berry fruit flavors, integrated with brown spice and vanilla oak characters that form a plush mouthfeel. The Tempranillo and Syrah grapes contribute bold, spicy flavors of blackberry and black pepper which marry well with the juicy dark cherry flavors of Bonarda and the deep plum flavors of the Malbec base. The addition of Cabernet Franc helps to balance the blend, as it melds with notes of warm brown spice to create a long, supple finish.

Blend: 53% Malbec, 15% Bonarda, 14% Tempranillo, 13% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc

My Notes:

Additional wines from Alamos:

About Alamos:

From the vineyard to the winery, the Alamos wines are made to emphasize varietal fruit character. The cool evening temperatures in Catena's high altitude vineyards allow for prolonged hang time, preserving the fruit's full spectrum of aromas and flavors.

At the winery, the grapes are gently destemmed, fermentation temperatures are carefully controlled and two to four year old barrels are used to age the wines.

Additional wines from Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

About Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

Las Rocas de San Alejandro is located in the region of Calatayud, about 150 miles northeast of Madrid, and is centered around the rivers of Jiloca and Jalon. Although there are still few wineries in the zone, the ones which are beginning to show with their wines why this region is so special.

Although the D.O. is quite young, vines have been grown in the zone for some time. About one eighth of the vineyard land’s production has been bottled at one of Spain’s best and most progressive cooperatives, San Alejandro. With an abundance of amazing raw material, Eric Solomon was able to commission several bottlings of very old vine fruit into what has become one of the most sought-after estates in the portfolio. Calatayud benefits from a continental climate with vast temperature differences between night and day. Harvests are much later than in other parts of Aragon, and the acidity/maturity/alcohol ratios tend to be more balanced.

As most of the vineyards lie on what was (thousands of years ago) an old river basin, the soil is comprised of brown limestone and loam over slate and gypsum. This particular soil is also ideal for production of olives, cherries, and other fruits. Jean-Marc Lafage (of Domaine Lafage in France’s Roussillon) is responsible for the Las Rocas cuvees.

Black cherry and ripe plum aromas followed by eucalyptus and fresh herbs announce this earthy Pinot Noir. On the palate, you will find caramelized layers of Santa Rosa plum with youthful acidity leading to a perfectly balanced and dry finish.

Salmon, pork tenderloin and mushroom based pasta dishes would be a superb match with this flavorful Pinot Noir. For the cheese course, try Fontina or Manchego with dried fruit and almonds.

This is a wine that displays more of the spicy, racy and mineral aspects of syrah with a strong savory component and less of that jammy fruit.
