Winemaker's Notes:

Like the dark red ruby the color of this wine resembles, Nita is a rare gem from the Spanish appellation of Priorat. From a region typically known for its concentrated barrel-aged reds, this wine is one of only a few jovens, or non-barrel aged wines, made within this celebrated appellation. Uneffectedby the toasted notes and wood tannins that barrel aging can produce, the 2009 Nita is perfect for those who want to taste the fruit and terroir of a wine in its purest form. Brain child of young female winemaker Meritxell Pallejà, this wine retains all of the characteristic mineralityof Priorat, while better preserving the complex fruit flavors of the old-vine Garnachaand Cariñena. Containing a primary bouquet of ripe red berries, violets and flint, this wine also has beautiful notes of tobacco, chocolate and fresh cream. As the wine also has lower alcohol thanmost Priorat wines, the 2009 Nita is fresh and easy to drink, with good acidity and juicy tannins that support a long finish.

About Nita:

Nita is a rare gem from Priorat, a region typically known for its concentrated barrel-aged reds, because it is one of the only unoaked "vino jovens," or young wines, made in this famous appellation. The creation of young winemaker Maritxell Palleja, Nita retains all the characteristic minerality of a Priorat wine, while showcasing the dense fruit flavors of old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena.

Maritxell Palleja is the third generation of her family to have been raised in Priorat, where her great-grandmother Anita built their first family home, “Cal Nita,” the namesake of this wine. After finishing her undergraduate degree in agricultural engineering, Palleja spent a harvest and crush in the Napa Valley and in Bordeaux. She then returned to Priorat and became assistant enologist for Alvaro Palacios, before obtaining her graduate degree in enology and creating her own label, Nita. Palleja carefully selects old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena grapes from the steep, slate-covered vineyards, where low yields produce wines of great expression and complexity. A biodynamic producer, Palleja aligns her vineyard management with lunar and seasonal cycles.

Additional wines from The Crossings:

About The Crossings:

We have arrived at The Crossings in 2002 after a seven year development journey. This began in 1995 when an exceptional site in the upper reaches of the Awatere Valley was identified. The site, with its massive clay cliffs acting to trap heat, its low frost incidence and the devigorating outwash gravel soils, was just perfect to produce classic Awatere wines of outstanding quality. The first vineyard development was made possible by the investment from a group of New Zealanders each sharing an interest in wine and the desire to invest in this unique opportunity. Interest was sufficient to allow for the development of a further two Awatere vineyards to compliment the initial vineyard in terms of terroir and flavour coming from the grapes grown on each site. By 2000 there were over 400 enthusiastic investors taking a keen interest in the vineyards and wine making developments, each calling The Crossings "our wine". From the beginning The Crossings had outstanding land, great vineyards, tremendous support and a dedicated team to bring together the crucial ingredients to produce wines of stand-out quality. The first wines made in 2001 show the character of the vineyards and The Crossings philosophy of wine and viticulture. See what we mean; open a bottle and quietly explore corners of this magnificent valley in your own time.

Additional wines from Cusumano:

About Cusumano:

Cusumano's wines come from premium sites all over Sicily, and are produced at the Partinico (straight west of Palermo) based family winery by third generation winemakers and brothers Diego and Alberto Cusumano. They craft wines of the 'new' Sicily typified by outstanding varietal expression, rich flavors, and a sensuality that could only be born under the Sicilian sun. Wine insiders have long predicted that Sicily would one day become Europe's dominant wine region. The sheer number of prime vineyard sites available, the diversity of microclimates and soils throughout the island, make it possible for Sicilian winemakers to work not only with exciting native varietals, but also with many international grapes. Cusumano is the pre-eminent producer turning that prediction into reality.

Winemaker's Notes:

The fortuitous discovery of a nest in a wild bush on the slopes of Apalta Vineyard inspired the unique shape of Clos Apalta Winery, designed vertically, with a naturally cool location underground. Our red blend, Canto de Apalta, born from the harmonious relationship between Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah also represents the melodious song of the unique community of birds that live in our vineyards.

Canto de Apalta originates from Chile's central semi-arid Rapel Valley. Here, the Pacific's Humboldt Current keeps the days warm and dry, and the nights pleasantly cool, allowing the grapes to slowly ripen. Slow maturation guarantees that our wine is able to have an expressive nose and a pleasant structure. The grapes are hand-harvested and transported to the winery in temperature-controlled containers. Strict quality control continues at the winery through a state of the art optical berry selector, Vistalys, which chooses only the freshest, cleanest and purest grapes for our wine. No clarification and very light filtration create natural wines that are true expressions of their origin. Enjoy now as a perfect pairing for meats and elaborate dishes, or cellar for a few years.

The mouth-watering acidity is beautifully balanced by flavorful Washington Riesling fruit. After more than a decade, the winery has truly found the "Eroica style," striving for beautiful bright fruit with crisp acidity and enhanced mineralilty.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Eroica:

About Eroica:

Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world's great Riesling producers. One from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and technique enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.

The first five vintages of Eroica Riesling (1999-2003) were named to Wine Spectator's "Top 100" list.

"I have long believed that a Riesling revival would have to start with a prominent New World winery like Chateau Ste. Michelle."
- Ernst Loosen, Dr. Loosen estate
