Winemaker's Notes:

Ripe raspberries lift from the glass and mingle with tempting aromas of strawberry-rhubarb tart and cola. Delicate notes of anise, cardamom and gingerbread spice lace the fruit to unfold a rich palate of black cherries supported by medium-fine-grained tannins. The finish lingers with attractive, subtle, toasty undertones, fine acid, and excellent balance.

Pairs beautifully with barbequed leg of lamb or braised pork tenderloin.

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for the Kings Ridge 2009 Oregon Pinot Noir come from vineyards in the renowned Willamette Valley and the Umpqua Valley. The combination of cool and warm climates found in these regions produces wine stacked with intense flavors and aromas. The nose on the 2009 Pinot Noir is loaded with rich dark cherry, plum and toasted hazelnuts. These inviting aromas seamlessly connect to the smooth, rich mouth feel, filled with freshly picked blackberry and plum flavors. The wine is loaded with fruit, which extends into a long finish with fine tannins that give complexity and structure to this wine.

The Wolftrap is a red blend including Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier.

Spicy profile with ripe black fruit and cherries. Hints of violet flavours from the Viognier. Smooth and rich on the palate with soft tannins and good density. Made for easy drinking.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Boekenhoutskloof:

About Boekenhoutskloof:

The name "Boekenhoutskloof" comes from the Cape beech, or Kaapse boekenhout, a tree indigenous to Franschhoek and once used by the Cape Dutch for furniture making. It is pronounced, not easily, bok-un-hoatscloof. The winery's white-washed, Dutch-style farmhouse, dated 1771, once stood in an orchard; pears still plump up in the trees around it. Kent and his partners, including South Africa's consummate ad-men John Hunt and Reg Lascaris, have never advertised the wine. And still the bottles - each with a sleek hand-torn label picturing seven different Capestyle chairs, one for each partner - keep selling out.

Kent is now studying to be a master of wine, one of three in South Africa taking the seriously competitive international course rather than the regional one. He's not got hubris enough to presume the post himself; he's already saturated in the business of making Boekenhoutskloof, as well as the winery's second label, Porcupine Ridge.

While he sounds casual about his craft ("It's a series of decisions, and when you make them"), small details give away his obsessive streak. His dogs are called Petrus and Gaja.

Winemaker's Notes:

Evodia is an exciting new project in the Denominacion de Origen Calatayud, hailed as one of Spain's most progressive and promising wine growing regions. It is here, in the vineyards of Atea, that Altovinum sources their Garnacha grapes for Evodia. In addition to the remarkable climate due to elevation, the property is comprised of pure schiste soils, known as pisara in the local area. Aficionados familiar with the wines of the Priorat and the Roussillon are well acquainted to this soil type and its extraordinary influence on the wines.

Blend: 100% Garnacha

Altovinum is a new project - a joint partnership between Eric Solomon, Jean Marc Lafage and Yolanda Diaz. Sourcing fruit from high elevation vineyards in the village of Atea, the debut wine is EVODIA, from the Greek word for aroma.

Produced from 100% Tempranillo grapes, which are hand harvested from the Montebuena vineyard.

Brilliant deep ruby red color, fruity aromas. Montebuena Red has a spicy vanilla bouquet and is smooth and fruity in the mouth with some well-integrated secondary nuances, full-flavored and a persistent pleasant finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Montebuena:

About Montebuena:

Montebuena is produced by Bodegas Burgo Viejo that were founded in 1987 by six families of farmers. Burgo Viejo's main asset has always been the exquisite winemaking process of grapes collected from its own vineyards throughout the years, back to the times when they were just a wine cellar selling in bulk (they started as a cooperative in the 1950's). Young Gorka Etxebarria is the leading winemaker and has been working with Burgo Viejo since December 2003.

2003 Australian Wine Companion rating: 89 points

Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit from our oldest vines close to the homestead was selected to go into the Koonowla Cabernet Sauvignon. These mature vines are grown on terra rossa soil and are traditionally pruned and allowed to sprawl to provide shade from the warm to hot afternoon sun. The fruit was destemmed and crushed before fermenting in 2 tonne open fermenters, they were then hand plunged twice a day for 2 weeks this helped extract maximum colour and flavour. Then the skins were pressed at sugar dryness in a tank press before being transferred to barrel. Once the pressure of vintage was over the wine was racked out of barrel and malolactic fermentation was induced in tank. The wine was then sulphered and returned to oak for 24 months then minimally filtered at bottling.
My Notes:

About Koonowla:

South Australia was founded in 1836 and the pioneering families of these early settlers quickly spread north to create Clare Valley, which remains one of Australia’s most productive regions for wool, grain, and wine production. Koonowla was established there shortly after by Colonel Barker, who began a farming/grazing enterprise but sold in 1892 to John Tothill who, with great vision, planted the first vines, built a fine winery for commercial wine making, and produced wines with a thriving export trade to England. Koonowla became one of the six original wineries in the Clare Valley and continued to develop until a tragic fire in 1926 destroyed much of the stock and cellars. It continued with vitaculture as a major business activity for another twenty years, but slowly reduced the area under vines to make way for the economic boom developing from grain and wool production. Finally, in 1985, 8 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon was planted, heralding the recommencement of Koonowla wines as a bottle label. Koonowla's current owners are Andrew and Booie Michael, who purchased in 1991 to expand their interests in the district. They immediately set to restoring the homestead and establishing new plantings – many of which are now in full production – to cover the same area that was originally planted in 1896, plus another 120 acres. This makes Koonowla one of the largest and most technologically current privately-owned enterprises in the district.

Over the years, the winery has remained committed to delivery handcrafted, small-lot wines, as well as affordable, superior quality everyday wines. In 2009, the winery reached a milestone when Wine Spectator named their 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Year," the first time a wine from Washington state has received the ranking. Winemaker's Notes:

The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc has a great range of aromas and flavors that seem to change and evolve in the glass. We get citrus, crushed herbs and a distinctive gooseberry lift with green notes reminiscent of fresh pea pods but also a sweet leafy boxwood aroma. On the palate there are flavors of grapefruit and red capsicum where mid palate fruit sweetness is balanced by a fresh, lively citrus acidity.

Sauvignon Blanc is a very food-friendly wine and terrific for appetizers such as artichoke dip, veggie dishes or dips, garlic or Italian seasonings in creamy sauces, fragrant salads, like Greek, caesar or garden, Thai food, fish (sushi), poultry and so much more.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Giesen Wine Estate:

About Giesen Wine Estate:

Established in 1981, the Giesen Wine Estate comprises some 75 acres at Burnham, just south of Christchurch. In Marlborough 360 acres are now in production. The Giesen Wine Estate is a family affair. The three brothers, Theo, Alex and Marcel run the winery that has grown into an export oriented business.

Low yielding grape vines grown in a cool climate is what makes Giesen wine unique. Complex fruit aromas make them enjoyable young, but refreshing acidity gives the wines backbone for long aging in the bottle. Wines with "vintage character" - something found only in the traditional viticultural areas of Europe - give a great variety of unique wines, year after year.
