Winemaker's Notes:

This Shiraz is produced at Charles Cimicky. Charles Cimicky produces rich, voluptuous, generous wines with superb balance. Apart from minor drip irrigation in January and February, the vines are dry grown, cover-cropped and organically fertilized. Now in his late forties Charles Cimicky is one of the most quality-driven, meticulous winemakers in South Australia. Piping Shrike Shiraz is named after for the Australian Magpie whose territorial diligence ensures the protection of the Barossa Shiraz grapes from thieving Blackbirds.

Winemaker's Notes:

It was once customary for a small group of zealous Barossa pioneers to regularly seek the cellar retreat of an old vineyard cottage. Within the cool stone depths of this hidden refuge, these normally hard working men whiled away many a contented hour with both cards and wine. Now a lingering part of Barossa history, the crumbling remains of this cottage still stand amidst venerable old vines that constantly produce this excellent, flavorful and aromatic Shiraz that always, "comes up trumps." 100% Shiraz.

About Cimicky:

Czech immigrant Karl Cimicky founded Karlsburg Winery in 1973. In the early 90’s Karl's son Charles began to take a keen interest in winemaking and the ‘good’ wines started turning into awesome wines. In addition to top of the line fermenters and barrels, Cimicky also has an estate bottling line, something of a rarity in Australia, allowing him to personally control all facets of production.

Winemaker's Notes:

Medium depth, crimson in color with purple hues. Satsuma plum, mulberry and musk lolly aromas jump out of the glass with savoury hints of rosemary, black olive and roasty adding to the complexity. Luscious black fruits flow onto the palate which is medium bodied, yet well rounded and mouth filling. Firm but fine, velvety tannins add a lovely structure and texture to the wine with sweet and briary spice balancing the juicy fruit through to the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Langmeil:

About Langmeil:

The land on which Langmeil Winery now stands was purchased by a 36 year old German blacksmith, Christian Auricht. He and his family arrived in South Australia in 1838 after emigrating from eastern-central Europe (Silesia) to escape religious persecution.

Christian planted his first acre of vines on the estate. The variety was Shiraz and the vines are still producing fruit today. Auricht's old vineyard is the source of Langmeil Winery's single vineyard Shiraz. This rare wine commemorates the pioneering spirit of the first settlers and, because of their willingness to endure so much hardship for the right to keep their faith, it has been named The Freedom 1843 Shiraz. The vineyard is believed to be one of the oldest known surviving Shiraz vineyards in the world (pictured here).

The property was purchased in 1996 by three local mates whose families have lived in the Barossa Valley for several generations: Richard Lindner, Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter. They restored the remaining old buildings and the village well and beautified the gardens. As a tribute to the early pioneers, the new owners refurbished the old winery and named it Langmeil, after the original village.

Langmeil's award winning premium range is internationally recognized and has contributed towards the winery being regarded as one of the top premium wine producers in Australia

The color displays a deep crimson red. On the nose intense aromas of rich dark berry and plums, layered with underlying notes of fragrant spice and chocolate, while on the palate, rich and round, with a full palate of bright berry fruit and plums flavors along with well-integrated oak, fine acidity, balanced tannins and a long seamless finish.

This wine is enjoyable now but will benefit from four to six years cellaring.

#61 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010

The Watcher. It is an image steeped in legend and mystery. It implies transcendence and authority. The Watcher is a being of knowledge, of understanding, of concern, of influence.

At Fetish Wines, we value this level of attention to every step of the winemaking process, from the soil to the bottle. We do not want to manipulate wine, but to craft it by the subtle direction that can only be achieved through an intimate relationship with the land.

For this wine, Rolf Binder is The Watcher

My Notes:

About Fetish:

Fetish Wine was introduced with the release of the 2004 vintage "The Watcher," a Barossa Valley Shiraz made by Rolf Binder at his acclaimed Veritas Winery. The brand combined high-quality wine, a prestigious appellation and a celebrity winemaker all wrapped up in cutting edge packaging.

Shortly after this initial release a new project came together, this time partnering with Wayne Dutschke to produce the "Field of Dreams" Barossa Moscato. This wine brought a new, and very different, facet of Australian winemaking into the Fetish portfolio. The distinctive blue bottle and colorful label contributed to the Fetish Wines theme of being consistently different.

2007 saw the second release of "The Watcher" Shiraz, which received an even greater reception in the USA marketplace than its initial release, and the introduction of "Playmates." An additional wine made for Fetish by Rolf Binder, "Playmates" is a Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro with eye-catching black-and-white artwork. The second release of "Field of Dreams" Moscato will be available before the end of the year.

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright straw yellow, inviting and open on the nose with aromas of white pepper, gooseberry and hints of yellow apple. Medium bodied with a crisp acidity, very balanced and spicy finish. A typical Grüner Veltliner at Federspiel level, subtle and very racy.

Serve chilled, directly from the fridge at 8°C. Drink young or store to mature for 2-3 years. A very versatile food wine! Perfectly accompanies poultry, fish, sea foods and a variety of cheeses.

Additional wines from Domane Wachau:

About Domane Wachau:

2005 brought a new, young, enthusiastic team to this historic property on the banks of the Danube river. Headed by general manager Roman Horvath and enologist Heinz Frischengruber, this team brings fresh ideas, personality and a new energy to the historic cooperative formerly known as Freie Weingartner Wachau. This dynamic duo produces wines which showcase the fruit character and mineral finesse provided by the Wachau valley's unique diversity. Domäne Wachau is the largest cooperative in the Wachau valley, and is made up of 600 contributing members farming slightly less than 500 hectares, or a full one third of the total region's vineyards. Each individual member is challenged to produce the best wines possible, and paid for the quality of their production first, the quantity second. The showplace of the winery is the baroque cellar palace depicted on the label.

Blend: 39% Shiraz, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot

Winemaker's Notes:

With Finca Mirador our goal is to allow the vineyard to express its "terroir". Malbec is the flagship red variety from Argentina. It has found in Mendoza its true home. We work as hard as necessary during eleven months in the vineyard, to produce grapes that will need very little intervention during the winemaking process. The climate, the viticulturural program, the irrigation management: Everything is thought as a step towards the goal of true expression of the vineyard. Finca Mirador's personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature. Fermentation took place in a small tank. At dryness, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it was then aged for 15 months.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Achával-Ferrer :

About Achával-Ferrer :

Founded in 1998, Achaval-Ferrer is a team of friends who dream about great wines. Achaval-Ferrer is also a collection of old vineyards in beautiful places. They are committed to the production of wines that are expressive of their terroir. They are a small winery because this is the key to top quality. Low yields allow the vineyards to express their personality in the grapes. Low intervention winemaking allows the grapes to fully express their vineyard in the bottle. Each of their wines is a different expresson of Malbec: The Mendoza Malbec is about varietal tipicity. Their Quimera blend is about Malbec as the key to complexity and balance. And their Fincas (Single Vineyards) are about how Malbec expresses different soils and microclimates.

Marie de Beauregard Vouvray is a very well balanced wine. The mouth is semi dry with delicate wooded overtones typical of the Pineau de la Loire (chenin blanc) varietal. Linden and honeysuckle fragrances are finely shaded by mineral overtones. A good balanced mouth is highlighted on the finish with a wonderful nose of white fruits.

Additional wines from Guy Saget:

About Guy Saget:

Guy Saget, the leading premium Loire Valley winery, is 9th Generation Family owned and managed. They are continuously exploring the best expression of Sauvignon Blanc both Sancerre and Pouilly Fume. Quality and respect of nature have always been the philosophy of Vignobles Guy Saget.
