Winemaker's Notes:

Beautiful deep purple color. The nose is like walking into a gentlemen's poker parlor: aromas of cigar, leather, and smoked meat fill the nose with hints of toasty oak, forest floor and baking spice. Well-structured tannins support big fruit flavors of blackberry jam, black spiced cherries, ground black pepper and just a hint of rhubarb. Nice, lingering finish. L3—lush, long and loveable.

Pairs well with grilled or smoked meats such as beef, pork and lamb, and dishes prepared with mild cheese or wild mushrooms.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Luca:

About Luca:

Laura Catena is a fourth generation winemaker who grew up in a traditional Argentine-Italian winemaking family in Mendoza. Laura splits her time between Mendoza and San Francisco, California, where she is an emergency physician, university professor and occasional tango dancer. Laura had the vision of creating a new breed of Argentine wines: small quantities, artisan quality, and true to their individual terroirs. A pioneer of small-grower relations in Mendoza, Laura's incredible, limited production wines come from some of Argentina's best fruit from low-yield, high-elevation, family-owned vineyards. The wines are named after her children - Luca, Dante and Nicola - and the background of the label is the McDermott coat of arms of her American husband, Daniel McDermott.

Winemaker's Notes:

Brilliant ruby-red in color with loads of ripe blackberry, strawberry and currant on the nose. The plush fruit flavors are deliciously integrated with subtle hints of mocha, tobacco and oak spice. Full and rich with soft tannins, the lush layers of fruit and spice are backed by lively acidity. This everyday Sangiovese is the perfect choice for barbecues, pastas, pizza and sausages.
My Notes:

Additional wines from La Carraia:

About La Carraia:

La Carraia was founded in 1976 by the Gialetti and Cotarella families. Riccardo Cotarella, respected throughout Italy and abroad as a leading authority in the production and marketing of Italian wines, is the winemaker at this estate. La Carraia began as a producer of bulk wines for top of the line estates such as Ruffino and Rocca delle Macie.

Today, the winery owns a total of 200 acres and is bottling its own wines in the heart of the Orvieto Classico, and a small amount of the excellent single vineyard Orvieto: Poggio Calvelli. The remaining property is planted to Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. La Carraia is the leading estate in the new emerging production of excellent red wines from the Orvieto zone.

Additional wines from Tenuta di Nozzole:

About Tenuta di Nozzole:

The Nozzole estate produces a Chianti Classico Riserva and a single-vineyard wine from the superb "La Forra" parcel. Cabernet Sauvignon, cultivated principally in another parcel of the estate planted in 1981 called "Il Pareto," yields a pure Cabernet wine first produced in the 1987 vintage. The principal white vineyards of the Nozzole estate, the "Le Bruniche" and "Casa Vecchia" vineyards, once planted in Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia, were replanted to Chardonnay in the early 1980s. These vineyards now produce Nozzole Le Bruniche, a distinctive, pure varietal Chardonnay.

Brilliant medium garnet color. This wine shows bright, assertive aromas of plum and black cherry with solid Pinot Noir character. Notes of violets, anise, and allspice are as harmonious in the wine's flavor profile as its light overlay of fine French oak.

Dark ruby color, with purple reflections. Intense nose of macerated cherries and licorice. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with a generous attack, a pleasant freshness and elegant tannins. This well-balanced wine shows a typical expression of southern Rhône wine with thyme and rosemary aftertaste.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep purple robe. A seducing bouquet which evokes blackberries, liquorice and mocha. A mouth which explodes with a mixture of black cherries and blackcurrant liqueur.

This very sensual wine would be ideal accompanying spicy dishes, a filet steak with ginger or a tajine "aux 5 épices".

My Notes:

About Domaine de Cristia:

Created by Etienne Grangeon 70 years ago, the property originally comprised 2 hectares of Grenache. It was developed further by the driving force of his son Alain, who joined the domaine in 1963. Passionate about viticulture, he notably contributed to the expansion of the domaine and planted improved grape varieties such as Syrah and Mourvèdre and created the identity of Cristia, based on the knowledge and respect of his soils.

Then, in 1999, Baptiste, Dominique and more recently Florent joined their father. Their priorities were to concentrate on selecting the best parcels in order to produce a wine of a great quality with a good ageing potential.

Made from 100% hand-selected Cabernet Sauvignon from the best parcels of the estate. The grapes are carefully chosen and fermented in small lots to preserve the vineyard identity.

A ripe, fleshy style, with blackberry and fig sauce notes laced with bittersweet Grenache. Powerful and layered, with classic Cabernet aromatics. Dark and ripe, with a nice loamy edge lurking on the finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Maipe:

About Maipe:

Produced in the Luján de Cuyo subregion of Mendoza by the Pelizzatti family, Maipe wines are an expression of the deep rich soils and a commitment to excellence by the young winemaker, Liliana Iannizzotto, and consultant Alberto Antonini.

"Alberto Antonini (think Altos Las Hormigas) is a consultant at Maipe which in and of itself is an indicator that the winery is focused on quality." - Wine Advocate (Dec 08)

The wines are produced from grapes grown in Agrelo and Luján de Cuyo, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. Agrelo is a cool climate region in Argentina’s premier grape growing area. Each bottle captures the expression of the grape variety, showing its adaptation to the local soils and climate. The vineyard is planted with 18 hectares of Malbec and 32 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils are deep and textured, which facilitates plant development and confers great body and structure to the wines. Classified among the best areas within the province of Mendoza, year-long sunny and dry conditions permit almost organic viticulture practices. Its outstanding feature is a great daily thermal amplitude, with mild days and cold nights that allow a particular richness of polyphenols that improve the wines’ flavors and color.

Maipe was the Lord of the Winds for the ancient Andean people. Argentineans still invoke his name to clear the skies after a heavy rain or to temper the summer heat. These wines, children of the Sun and the Winds, are produced from grapes grown at the foothills of the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. The intense color and aromas capture the expression of the soils that gave them birth.

Pair with grilled or roasted red meats, light game, poultry and mild cheeses.

Additional wines from Bouchard Aine & Fils:

About Bouchard Aine & Fils:

When Michel Bouchard founded his wine merchant business in Beaune in 1750 with his elder son, he wanted to settle in the heart of Burgundy and its vines. Being close to the vine-growers, he created a unique expertise in selection, wine making and aging with one mission:

Always search for perfection in quality, authenticity in style and prestige in the name.

For over two centuries, this has been the vision of the House of Bouchard Ainé & Fils.
