Winemaker's Notes:

Simi 2009 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon follows up on its deep, dark garnet color with lifted, pretty aromas of clove, cinnamon, hints of cedar, mint chocolate, and toasty oak notes that beautifully frame dark fruit. Compelling flavors of cassis, blackberry, and plum along with black pepper, cedar, and clove keep this dark and somewhat brooding wine from being too serious. This medium-to full-bodied

Alexander Valley Cabernet will bring out the best in roasted mushroom and wild nettle pesto pizza, or charcoal-grilled beef carpaccio with asiago-onion salad.

Blend: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot

About Simi:

In 1876, brothers Giuseppe and Pietro Simi began making wine in San Francisco from Sonoma County grapes and eventually planted vineyards near Healdsburg. Simi's historic stone cellars were built in 1890 and are still used to age the wines. Today, Simi is recognized as a leader in innovation and experimentation with a history of over 125 years of cutting-edge winemaking.

Their Alexander Valley vineyards possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region. Years of geologic activity – from an ancient mudflow to the meandering Russian River and Mayacama Creek – has created numerous distinct soil types and a range of microclimates. Here they grow the red Bordeaux varietals for their Reserve Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for their Sendal.

Their Russian River Goldfields vineyard is planted to field selections chosen from the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California. The combination of diverse clones and the cool, Russian River Valley climate produce Simi’s distinct Reserve Chardonnay.

Simi's winemakers focus on site-specific winemaking and use the most modern advances in vineyard management, fermentation and blending to best express the personality and flavors of each vineyard site.

Winemaker's Notes:

Casablanca Valley's cool growing conditions are perfect for Pinot Noir. Using artisan winemaking techniques, Veramonte Pinot Noir becomes a soft, round, medium-bodied wine with complex flavors of red berries and spice balanced with soft, silky tannins.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Veramonte:

About Veramonte:

Veramonte represents a return to Agustin Huneeus' Chilean roots. When he spearheaded development of the Veramonte Estate in 1990, there were less than 100 acres of grapevines planted in the Casablanca Valley.

The coastal mountain ranges surrounding the Casablanca estate create a unique terroir with a diversity of microclimates. The valley floor's cool climate is reminiscent of Carneros and ideal for growing premium Chardonnay. The foothills are warmer, akin to the more Northern reaches of the Napa Valley. Here, the climate is more suited to varieties like Carmenëre, the lost Bordeaux grape that has become Chile's citizen and the basis of Primus, our racy, exotic Chilean blend.

Using the latest viticultural technology developed in California, rootstock has been matched to each vineyard block and clone. Vertical trellising and dense vine spacing balance growth and fruit production. Veramonte's Casablanca vineyard produces significantly lower yields than other grape growing regions in Chile, resulting in grapes with more intensity and concentration.

Recognizing that the region also had potential as a tourist destination for its proximity to Santiago, Huneeus began to plant the estate and in 1995, constructed the first Napa Valley style hospitality center in Chile. The first wines were released in 1996.

Winemaker's Notes:

This brilliantly clear, pale-straw-colored Sauvignon Blanc leads with fresh and appealing aromas of Meyer lemon, lime zest, stone fruit, grapefruit, tart apple, and hints of flowers followed by a lively palate which reprises the lemon, lime, and grapefruit themes of the nose. This refreshing, bright, and crisp wine has a long finish, and ends with a lingering impression of citrus and wet stone.

Try this wine with fresh Dungeness crab meat crumbled atop arugula tossed with ruby red grapefruit, golden beats, avocado, and Meyer lemon vinaigrette or pan roasted chicken breast fanned atop pappardelle pasta tossed with English peas and pea sprouts in a lemon and brown butter sauce, topped with gremolata crumble.

Blend: 97% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Semillon, 1% Viognier

Winemaker's Notes:

Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, lightly floral with hints of peach pit, honeydew rind, white pear, and tangerine. On the palate, it has beautiful structure and acidity similar to Sauvignon Blanc along with beguiling fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip and plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry, this wine has to be tasted to be believed.

Best enjoyed in its youth either by itself, or as a wonderful partner with smoked meats, mild to medium-strong cheeses, and seafood (especially sushi!). Keep one in the fridge at all times.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Crios de Susana Balbo:

About Crios de Susana Balbo:

After 22 years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios."

Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. These wines are produced under Dominio del Plata's code of sustainable agriculture.

Like Susana's own crios (a boy and a girl), they are extremely lovable and fun to be around. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The artifact illustrates the interconnectedness of every generation, and the irony that we will be both the parent and the offspring at different times in our lives.

Blend: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 16% Malbec, 16% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc

My Notes:

Additional wines from BV Century Cellars:

About BV Century Cellars:

Beaulieu Vineyard was named by Fernande de Latour, the wife of BV founder Georges de Latour. Georges purchased the property in 1900 and surprised Fernande by bringing her to the spot that would eventually be the birthplace of one of California's premiere wineries. One look and Fernande was in heaven - she exclaimed "Beaulieu!" which means "beautiful place" in French. That is how BV or Beaulieu Vineyard got its name.

Fernande's famous hospitality and Georges de Latour's entrepreneurial spirit are how the BV winery gained its reputation. Fernande would be sure that if she hosted anyone in her home, she would always greet the guest with a glass of wine at the door. Georges, on the other hand, was out and about town and was quickly becoming a highly respected figure in the California wine industry. In 1902, the opportunity to purchase more property was presented to him by his neighbor and he bought and planted 127 acres, conveniently located right next to his home.

By 1911, Georges was already garnering attention for his work. This is a quote from the St. Helena Star in May 1911, "When it comes to quality, California is greatly indebted to Mr. G. de Latour, of Rutherford, who for some years has imported hundreds of thousands of the choicest French grafted wines, which have been planted in all the important vineyards in the state."

My Notes:

Additional wines from Angove Family Winemakers:

About Angove Family Winemakers:

The Angove family company, Angove's Pty. Ltd., ranks among Australia's largest privately owned wine companies and stands as one of the few with strong interests in distilling as well as grape growing and winemaking.

His early experimentation with vines, winemaking and distilling, led to the establishment of a proud family business. Dr. Angove's initial plantings at the township of Tea Tree Gully in the Adelaide foothills were the forerunner of one of the largest vineyards in the southern hemisphere - the magnificent Nanya Vineyard at Renmark in South Australia's Murray Valley.

Since World War II, the company has steadily expanded its operations and structure. Their Renmark facility has grown to become a major winemaking and distilling enterprise, with storage capacity for more than15 million litres of wine and spirit. In 1947, Thomas William Carlyon Angove, grandson of the founder, took the helm as Managing Director, beginning a new era in development.

In 1983, the fourth generation of the family took control, when John Carlyon Angove succeeded his father as Managing Director of the company.

The success of the Angove's identity owes a great deal to a pioneering spirit. The same urge that drove Dr. Angove to leave his home in Cornwall and emigrate to Australia is evident in many of the developments the company has taken since.

Bright purple in color. The primary dark berry aromas are complemented by licorice and dark chocolate. The wine is straightforward and a bit youthfully grapey, with sweet blackberry and cassis flavors, supple texture and a late candied floral quality. This became firmer with air but is in no way hard. Very easy to drink.
My Notes:

About Campos Reales:

Located around 110 miles southeast of Madrid, Bodega Campos Reales is situated in La Mancha region, the largest wine producing region in the world.

The calcareous (lime) clay soils, with their surface san and shingle deposits, are ideal for maximum water retention, an essential element in an area of scarce rainfall. Extremes of cold in winter and heat in summer: climactic conditions that are ideal for producing excellent quality grapes.

A wide variety of grapes can be found in our vineyards. Amongst the reds are Tempranillo, Garnacha, Tintorera, Cabernet, Syrah, Monastrell, Moravia, Merlot, and Bobal. Whites that thrive here are: Airen, Macabeo, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Deep violet red. Powerful aromas of spices, wild herbs, and toasty vanilla. Ripe black and red fruit, full of soft tannins, give this wine a big structure with a creamy and round texture. Elegant and toasty notes from the ageing oak allow for a charming and lingering finish.

Best served with spicy entrées, steak, pork sliders, and hard cheeses.

Additional wines from Vina MontGras:

Winemaker's Notes:

2009 was a good vintage with plenty of season to reach peak ripeness. We cold-fermented our Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Blanc juice in stainless tanks and then stopped the fermentation to achieve a lower alcohol level with balanced residual sweetness.

Soft White is finished sweet but with enough acid to keep it in balance. The 2009 Soft White shows tropical notes, a hint of citrus and floral notes in leading to a clean and crisp finish.

Our Soft White is delightful on its own or serve well-chilled with fruit, cheese, and light desserts. The wine is also a perfect complement to marinated fish and poultry dishes.

About Ste. Chapelle Winery:

From high atop "Winery Hill", Ste. Chapelle Winery overlooks thousands of acres of fertile orchards and farmland in Southwestern Idaho. Ste. Chapelle was founded in 1976 and named after La Sainte-Chapelle Church in Paris, France.
