Additional wines from S.A. Prum:

About S.A. Prum:

Founded in 1911 by Sebastian Alois Prüm, family-owned S.A. Prüm has been in the hands of Raimund Prüm, head winemaker and Sebastian's grandson, since 1971 when he assumed full management of the estate. The property has earned a reputation as one of Germany's most successful wineries, internationally acclaimed for its production of superb quality Riesling. The Prüm family has a rich and ancient history in the mid-Mosel, where they have owned vineyards in the towns of Bernkastel, Graach, Wehlen and Zeltingen.

Today, the estate comprises 40 acres of vineyards planted principally with Riesling. Over 15 acres of S.A. Prüm's holdings are located within the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr ("sundial of Wehlen") domain. Named for the historic and well-recognized sundial painted on an outcrop of slate by a Prüm ancestor back in 1842, the incredibly steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is a globally renowned source of what is arguably Germany's finest Riesling. As the name suggests, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where vines average 80 years and older, benefits from plentiful sunshine – a critical factor in the world's northernmost wine producing country. The soil is comprised of layers of finely decomposed, mineral-rich blue slate that date back approximately 400 million years. Underneath, deep-lying aquifers provide the vines with adequate water during dry periods.

Winemaker's Notes:

Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding dark ruby red wine with bell pepper, smoke and eucalyputus aromas. The wine is aged for 18 months in one-, two and three-year-old French oak barrels, and then aged a further 2 months after bottling. It is an appetizing, smooth, well-rounded and tasteful wine. Black currants flavors, well-balanced with a long finish. Enjoy this fine Cabernet Sauvignon with red meats, cheeses and pasta.

Winemaker's Notes:

Good rosé is like a carnival in your mouth—and not one of your low rent carnivals. We're talking about your really classy, country fair kind of carnival. Our 2009 Ménage à Trois is the epitome of a good rosé. No pretension, no pretense. Just a fruit-laden roller coaster ride of raspberries, strawberries, lychee nuts and flowers with a silky smooth finish.

About Menage a Trois:

Given the choice, would you rather be a party of one…or a Ménage à Trois? In a blended wine, the different varietals each bring something to the table, making for a more complex, delicious wine. As a master chef uses different ingredients to achieve the perfect recipe, a winemaker skillfully selects and blends different grape varieties to create harmonious and intriguing wines. With each of our playful blends of three, there's no doubt that the whole is greater (and more fun) than the sum of its parts.

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of 87% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Sauvignon Musque.

Mother Nature was very kind in 2007. Not too warm, yet warm enough for the grape to flourish. These perfect growing conditions allowed for a long growing season resulting in optimal ripeness. Preserving the aromatics of this grape throughout the winemaking process is challenging, but we are able to continue to craft a truly refined Sauvignon Blanc rich with character.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Matanzas Creek:

About Matanzas Creek:

Founded in 1977, Matanzas Creek Winery is located on the site of a retired dairy farm in Sonoma County's Bennett Valley. In 1985, the original winery, a converted dairy barn, gave way to a modern winemaking facility and since that time the Estate's Bennett Valley vineyards have grown to include over 280-acres of Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. Vineyard acquisitions in Sonoma Valley, Carneros, Russian River Valley and Knights Valley provide the vineyard management and winemaking teams with an enviable selection of fruit. Sourced from Estate-owned vineyards, the Matanzas Creek wine portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot, as well as a limited amount of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

As important as the history of the winery itself is its location in Sonoma County's newest American Viticultural Area (AVA), Bennett Valley. Although only formally recognized as an AVA in December 2003, Bennett Valley has a rich history of grape growing dating back to the mid-1800s. Once defined as part of Sonoma County's Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain AVA's, Bennett Valley overlaps with these winegrowing regions but carves out 8,150 acres to call its own (of which 850 acres are planted with grapevines). Three mountains define Bennett Valley and also serve to capture a cool maritime air stream which promotes a cooler, longer growing season that results in more complex wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

This 2007 is a madcap blend of Merlot, Syrah and Gewürztraminer. The two red grapes received as 24-hour cold soak on the skins to give the wine its suggestive pinkness and luscious body. The Gewürztraminer was cold fermented to preserve the exotic spice and naked fruit. No malolactic fermentation here-just crisp acidity.

Good rosé is like a carnival in your mouth—and not one of your low rent carnivals. Winemaker's Notes:

The wine is a bright, pale yellow green color. With expressive spring flower aromas, the wine shows a clean, lively, refreshing character on the palate that is very easy to drink. This youthful wine should be served chilled at 8°C to appreciate its refreshing, dry and attractive character, as a fine aperitif or with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish or hors d'oeuvres.
My Notes:

About Hugel:

In the cellars, the oldest of which dates back to 1551, can be seen rows of oak wine casks, over one hundred years old, crafted by the forefathers of the present generation of Hugels now running the company. Near them is the oldest cask in the world still in use: the Sainte Caterine, which has a capacity of 8,800 litres. It was built in 1715, the year in which Louis XIV died.

The company has always maintained its family character and is determined to keep it that way. The vineyards are owned and farmed by individual members of the family whereas the company owns the buildings and machinery.

Intensely ruby-red in color with supple aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry, followed by spicy notes of charcoal, vanilla and black pepper. On the palate, bursting flavors of ripe fruit and exotic spice are balanced by pleasant acidity and silky tannins.

Delicious with roasted meats, eggplant parmigiana, pasta, grilled pork chops and veal casseroles.

My Notes:

About Morgante:

The Morgante winery is located in the pristine countryside of southern Sicily. The winery represents one family's initiative to employ five generations of viticultural experience and for the first time, make their own wine from the fruit of their vineyards. In 1994, Antonio Morgante and his sons, Carmelo and Giovanni, decided to vinify their own grapes. This decision represented the beginning of a strong commitment to achieve the best results with indigenous grapes while keeping an eye towards innovation.

In 1997, the family hired Riccardo Cotarella as their winemaker. Cotarella, widely recognized for his work crafting compelling wines from Italy's native varietals, shares the Morgante passion for producing great red wines from Nero d'Avola. In Sicily, Nero d'Avola is indisputably the red grape for wines of excellence. And it is the vine that the Morgante family has always cultivated. All aspects of production from vineyard to cellar are rigorously controlled by every member of the family, each one dedicated to making wines of the highest possible quality.
