Winemaker's Notes:

Initial aromas offer earthy elements of tea, tobacco and herbs. In the mouth, Benziger 2005 Syrah has dark fruit flavors of black cherry and ripe plum. This wine boasts a long finish with notes of vanilla and toast from the oak barrel aging.

This Syrah makes an excellent match for barbecued steak, pizza with mushrooms, or smoked duck.

Cline Los Carneros Syrah is grown on a hillside in their Sonoma Carneros estate vineyard. The combination of foggy mornings, warm afternoons and cool evenings make this region one of the most highly regarded in California.

Winemaker's Notes:

#83 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

Dark cherry color with purple tones. In the nose it has powerful aromas of red berries, toast, leather and smoke from aging in oak barrels. Good structure with ripe blackberry and blueberry notes and sweet tannins. The palate is very rich with an elegant balance between fruit, alcohol and oak. Pair with roasted or braised meat, lamb, pork or game, braised vegetables, mushrooms, poultry and baked or grilled fish with hearty sauces, smoked seafood, blue cheese and cured meats.

Aged in French oak for 12 months. 100% Monastrell from 45 year old vines in Jumilla where a harsh, arid climate and shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock, combine to produce very low yields.

"The 2006 Juan Gil is also 100% Monastrell but aged for 12 months in French and American oak. It was sourced from an estate vineyard with 45 years of age. This purple-colored wine offers superb aromatics of wood smoke, damp earth, violets, and blueberry pie. Layered, succulent, and long, it will evolve for another 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2018."
-Wine Advocate

"Dark purple. Spicy blackberry and cassis on the nose. Refreshingly bitter cherry and dark berry skin flavors are brightened by zesty minerality and firmed by dusty tannins, picking up subtle iron and graphite qualities with air. Finishes with very good focus and youthful grip, the cherry note repeating. I like this wine's energy."
-International Wine Cellar

My Notes:

About Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil:

This winery originated in 1916, when Juan Gil Giménez, great-grandfather of the present generation, started getting involved in the world of wine, building a winery in the heart of Jumilla. His son, Juan Gil Guerrero, dedicated his life to this world. But the ones who really consolidated the project were Juan Gil González and his brother Paco, the founder's grandsons. They forged an image of quality, efficiency and reliability which the present generation is trying to maintain and improve as much as possible.

At present, the Gil Vera family, Juan Gil Lencina's great-grandchildren, are the owners of Bodegas Juan Gil. They decided to start a new cellar on the property that the family owns in Jumilla, in order to get it adapted to the market. This new cellar is situated in "Término de Arriba" in the northwest of the city. It is so called because it is the highest point in Jumilla. It has been a winegrowing area for centuries and yields grapes of extraordinary quality.

Winemaker's Notes:

Brilliant straw yellow in color, the nose is delicately floral and fruity with notes of citrus. Light and crisp with bright lemon/lime flavors. A slight flinty accompanies notes of green apple. Harmonious, pleasantly complex in flavor with a soft mouthfeel.

Best served lightly chilled. Delicious with all types of seafood, white meats and carpaccio.

My Notes:

About Teruzzi & Puthod:

The life of restless Enrico Teruzzi is as unique as his wine. Born in one of Italy's most industralized, urban areas, near Milan, he found himself, at forty, in one of the most beautiful, historical, unpolluted regions, producing a superb, historical wine.

Eclectic and versatile, Enrico's interests have ranged from electromechanics to professional skiing. At twenty-eight, he married French born Carmen Puthod, prima donna of Milan's celebrated La Scala; at thirty, he was a father; at forty, a country gentleman in Tuscany; at forty-four, a hit.

In a way, being a newcomer in the wine world was instrumental to his success: Enrico started from square one, unburdened by prejudice and past mistakes; supported by expert advice at first, and by such classics as Gayon and Peynaud. He was actually one of the very first to introduce temperature control in Vernaccia di San Gimignano production, and his state-of-the-art technology soon set the pace in the appellation.

Today, he has achieved a perfect balance of depth and cleanliness; of fruit, complexity and barrique; of tradition and international appeal - and, thanks to his revolutionary, minimal temperature treatment of musts, exceptional continuity in quality, whatever the vintage.

Winemaker's Notes:

High-density, low-yield vineyard plots in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeast Italy. The soil is well-drained and rich in clay and limestone. From the Cordignano Estate.

Pale gold with copper tones. Fruity, with a pronounced hint of acacia flowers and apple. Elegant and fruity in the mouth becoming full- bodied and well-structured. It has a very persistent finish.

Excellent with all fish-based dishes. Terrific accompaniment to herb risottos, first course dishes and cheeses.

My Notes:

About Conte Brandolini:

Count Brandino Brandolini's true passion is revealed in his role as owner and winemaker at his family's historic Vistorta estate in northeast Italy's Friuli region, just 25 miles north of Venice. This down-to-earth, Venetian-born graduate of Texas A&M and the University of Bordeaux took the helm at Vistorta in the 1980s. Influenced by his experience in Bordeaux and recognizing the outstanding potential of his family's estate vineyards (planted with Merlot for over a century), Brandolini set out to produce a world-class red wine from Vistorta.

Working with his close friend and colleague Georges Pauli, winemaker at Chateau Gruaud-Larose and consultant to a number of leading Bordeaux properties, Brandolini implemented a series of radical improvements at the estate. Using select Merlot clones from Bordeaux alongside his existing Merlot vines, Brandolini implemented a system of high-density planting in Vistorta's well-drained, limestone-rich vineyards. Here, protective mountain ranges to the north and west combine with the moderating influence of the Adriatic Sea to create a superb microclimate for the cultivation of outstanding Merlot grapes. Now, 20 years later, Vistorta enjoys a reputation as one of northeast Italy's most sought-after red wines.

A delicious red blend from low yielding Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Grenache vineyards in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. A dark red wine with rich flavors of fruit, spice and meaty characters with a firm structure. Perfect alongside a meal of grilled lamb and sausage.
My Notes:

About Chateau de Jau:

The Dauré family has long been acknowledged as the premier winemaking family of Côtes du Roussillon. Their holdings are comprised of two estates: Château de Jau and Les Clos de Paulilles.

Built in 1792, Château de Jau is located in the southernmost foothills of the Roussillon slopes of the Corbières Mountains in French Catalonia. Today, the estate produces Côtes du Roussillon Villages Rouge, Côtes du Roussillon Blanc, Muscat de Rivesaltes, along with the lovely wines known as "le Jaja de Jau."

The estate spans the villages of Cases de Pêne, Estagel, and Tautavel, occupying 134 cultivated hectares planted in eleven classic Mediterranean varietals.

The magnificent hillside vineyards were completely revitalized by removing neglected vines and cumbersome stone. The magnificent hillside vineyards of the Château de Jau were painstakingly revitalized by ripping up the old neglected vineyards and crushing the stone upturned in the process.

The rebuilding of the vineyards at Château de Jau, overseen by winemaker Estelle Dauré, represents some of the most ambitious and exciting work undertaken in the Roussillon in the last twenty years. This revitalization has allowed the Dauré family to create the incredible wines produced today.

Additional wines from Innocent Bystander:

About Innocent Bystander:

The idea behind Innocent Bystander is to produce great value, food friendly wines that are not your run of the mill varietal blends. Taking fruit from various sources in Central Victoria (in particular Sangiovese, Shiraz, Pinot Gris and Viognier) the team at Innocent Bystander is inspired to utilize and showcase the natural qualities of each region in their unique blends.

As a group of winemakers and viticulturalists who eschew the bland direction and market dominance increasingly exerted by the large corporate winemaking groups, the folks behind these wines see themselves as innocent bystanders. They remain accountable to their craft, not shareholders.
