Winemaker's Notes:

#47 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010

The wine offers a brilliant ruby red color. As time passes, the hue is enriched with garnet tones that, as the years go by, lighten further toward orange with an ochre tint typical of Tuscan wines. The aroma is satisfyingly intense, fine and elegant, with light scents of ripe fruits and violets. As it evolves, the wine develops an appealing bouquet that is full and complex. It possesses a pleasant fullness and an outstanding balance of body and structure. Somewhat austere in its youth, the wine softens with age, becoming velvety and developing prolonged and appealing aromatic persistence.

Winemaker's Notes:

The color is a brilliant red. Aromas of red-berried fruit, and violets are present. On the palate excellent balance, freshness and pleasantness accompany notes of soft fruit and cherry, hints of violet. Iideal with pasta and pizza, it is recommended as an everyday wine.

About Fattoria Viticcio:

Founded in 1960 by Lucio and Franca Landini, the Viticcio Estate still stands above the picturesque town of Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Their focus is to produce high-quality wines worthy of an international clientele while at the same time respecting the traditions and viticulture of the region. This focus remains the same today under the direction of the second generation, Alessandro Landini.

The estate comprises more than 30 hectares of vines, all of which are farmed organically. Additionally, seven of those hectares are farmed biodynamically. Alessandro strongly believes that in order to produce high-quality wines you must first respect the land in which the vines are planted. To this end he uses no pesticides in his vineyards and fertilizes by planting things such as fava beans and barley between the rows of vines, allowing them to flower, and then plowing them back into the soil to add important nutrients. A handful of wines see some time in the smaller barriques, but the large majority is aged in large botti. The wines of Viticcio represent an important combination of traditional, time-honored techniques with modern-day technology and respect for the environment.

Winemaker's Notes:

The wine has a deep red color. It is aromatically, intense, with great complexity. Smoky, red fruits (red currant, strawberry) with tones of vanilla and spice. The texture is lush, soft tannins with long flavors of red fruits and vanilla. Great served with all-meat dishes marinated or coked, pasta dishes and perhaps best after a meal.

Additional wines from Castillo de Monseran:

About Castillo de Monseran:

Castillo de Monseran is located in Carineña in Spain. Cariñea is frequently cited as the birthplace of Grenache/Garnacha. Only later did the varietal migrate to southern France, where it gained fame as a Rhone varietal, especially in the big, peppery Chateauaneuf de Papes of the southern Rhône. The terroir in Carineña holds similarities of the southern Rhône.

Winemaker's Notes:

Authentic Chilean style. Dark almost purple core with deep sooty red at the fringes. A blend of concentrated blackberry and plum softened by some red fruit character. Distinctive dried herbal and white pepper spice character. A superb balance of full fruit, good acidity, sweet French oak, and full tannins on the long lingering finish. Cutting edge grape coming into its own a premiere producer.

Additional wines from Casa Silva:

About Casa Silva:

Founded in 1892 by French wine pioneer and ancestor Emilio Bouchon, Casa Silva is now owned by Mario Silva and family - the fifth generation of winemakers. Many of the vines planted are over 90 years old, carried over from Bordeaux, pre-phylloxera, by the first generation. Previously selling their juice to larger, bulk wineries, Casa Silva began a bold, estate bottling program in 1997. Now, the Silva Family are viewed as leaders of the new generation of premium wine producers, and their wines have received international acclaim.
