Winemaker's Notes:

45% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Syrah.

Dark ruby color. A hint of sweetness, medium plus body with well integrated tannins that linger on the long finish. A nicely balanced wine, with enough acid and tannin to make this an excellent compliment to many foods.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Hedges Family Estate:

About Hedges Family Estate:

It was 1986 when Washington native Tom Hedges found his first employment in the wine industry marketing American wines in Taiwan. From that humble beginning, Hedges Cellars, then a "virtual" winery, found its first customer: the government of Sweden. Tom and his wife Anne-Marie marketed their Cabernet/Merlot blend to foreign buyers exclusively for two years before going domestic and opening up North American distribution. Still without their own winery, they took a chance buying acreage on an obscure little hill called Red Mountain.

The Hedges have concentrated their efforts on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the concept of terroir since their first vintage in 1987. With Anne-Marie Hedges' roots and childhood in the Champagne region of France, it was only natural that a French-style chateau would be built on the slopes of Red Mountain amongst their vines.

Brother Pete Hedges joined the winery as General Manager, becoming head Winemaker in 2002. Son Christophe and his wife Maggie began working for the winery soon thereafter and Hedges Cellars became Hedges Family Estate.

Our future direction is clear: we will continue to work as a family to unite farming, winemaking, and the promotion of our wines and the Red Mountain AVA.

Winemaker's Notes:

Vintage dated each year, the Domaine Carneros Brut Cuvée represents the best of Carneros pinot noir and chardonnay made into a classic sparkling wine. The appellation is 100% Carneros. The Brut was aged in the bottle for three years before release. It will continue to develop further depth and complexity as it ages.

This cuvée has aromas of meadow flowers, pears and citrus peel enhanced with notes of toast, vanilla and spice. The wine is elegantly structured, rich, round and flavorful with the long creamy finish that is the hallmark of Domaine Carneros wines.

Lovely served with double or triple cream cheeses, it also matches especially well with oysters, shellfish, fish, poultry, Asian and California cuisine.

Additional wines from Domaine Carneros:

About Domaine Carneros:

A joint venture between Champagne Taittinger and Kobrand Corporation, partners who are perfectionists in their fields, Domaine Carneros has established itself since its inception in 1987 as one of California's finest producers of premium quality, methode traditionelle sparkling wines. The inspiration for Domaine Carneros belongs to Champagne Taittinger; the first glimmerings of the concept were shaped in the mind of Claude Taittinger in 1947. The 138 acre estate is situated in the Carneros appellation of Northern California, a 36,900 acre viticultural area which straddles the border between the Napa and Sonoma counties at their southern extremity. The estate's vineyards extend up a slope rising to a crest overlooking San Francisco and San Pablo Bay, with an elevation of 120 to 260 feet above sea level.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 growing season was in a word - perfect. The weather was dry, warm with lots of sunshine. We started the season a week late in blooming, but caught up as the perfect ripening weather lasted through September. The "tale of two vintages" has to do with the freeze that many vineyards experienced on the night of October 10th. The good news about this event is that most of our grapes were either already picked or had already reached a good level of maturity. It was at that point where we had to get in the rest of the fruit in short order, which we did.

The Indian Wells Cabernet is our warm climate, ripe, jammy "New World" style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyards in the area are more than a decade old now and showing character and complexity. This lush wine reveals fruit-forward blackberry and cherry flavors and dark fruit aromas.

Pair with stuffed peppers, blue cheese, duck, beef, veal, lamb, dark chocolate.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Chateau Ste. Michelle:

About Chateau Ste. Michelle:

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery combines Old World winemaking with New World innovation and is best known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau Ste. Michelle receives some of the highest accolades in the industry, including "American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast for 2004 and "2005 Winery of the Year" by Restaurant Wine. In addition, the winery's Eroica Riesling, crafted from a partnership with German winemaker Ernst Loosen, has been named to Wine Spectator's prestigious "Top 100" wines list for five consecutive years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the few premium wineries in the world with two state-of-the-art wineries, one devoted to whites and another to reds. This dedicated approach to winemaking allows winemaker Bob Bertheau to build winemaking programs to the unique specifications of red and white wines. While all of Chateau Ste. Michelle's vineyards are located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains where the climate is dry and sunny, Bob Bertheau makes the award winning white wines in Woodinville, 15 miles northeast of Seattle. The winery's expansive, 87-acre estate hosts more than 250,000 visitors annually for tours, tastings, dinners and outdoor summer concerts.

Yet another stellar vintage in a string of odd-year dandies. This primary wine of our production offers a merge of red and black fruits, delicate spiciness from carefully selected American oak barrels, and deep brooding opaque color. There is a generous back palate of supple but not shy tannins, a graceful flow across the palate, and a fine, debonaire finish.

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon were selected from a collection of vineyards in highly prized regions of the Napa Valley including St. Helena, Oak Knoll, and Rutherford. With each vineyard imparting their own characteristics, the final blend captures a beautiful display of signature Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

This Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautiful nose with layers of berries, cocoa powder, with hints of clove and spice. The tannins build a nice core structure with a round mouthfeel. Dark fruit, wild berries and cocoa flavors lead to a finish with well-integrated oak.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Chardonnay vineyards for this blend span the entire cool climate Carneros appellation, where temperatures are moderated by persistent morning fog, cool afternoon breezes and the adjoining San Pablo Bay. During growing season the sun burns off fog by late morning and the temperatures rise quickly. At the same time, hot air rising above the Central Valley is replaced by cool air funneling through the Petaluma Wind Gap off the Pacific Ocean. The combination of sunshine and cool temperatures results in gradual maturation of the grapes, allowing them to develop great natural acidity and deep fruit flavor.

A brilliant straw yellow, this Chardonnay opens with heady aromas of lime, apple, apricot and pineapple, spiked with appealing hints of honeysuckle, oregano and tarragon. Its lively entry – from the wine's natural acidity -- is accompanied by layers of citrus and tropical fruit flavors. An underlying mineral component, along with the subtle influence of French oak, adds intrigue. This is a classic Carneros Chardonnay, finishing crisply and beckoning for another taste.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Artesa Vineyards and Winery:

Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999.

The Codorníu Group actually consists of six spectacular wineries whose wines are enjoyed daily in over 100 countries around the globe. So, while Artesa is a relative newcomer to Napa, their heritage is rich. They share five centuries of history with 15 generations of a remarkable winemaking family.

The Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a deep garnet color with intense aromas of ripe cherry, cassis, and pipe tobacco. Concentrated flavors of ripe plums, and dark bing cherries marry perfectly with the oak nuances.
