Winemaker's Notes:

Deep ruby red with a violet hue on the edge, Artezin Zinfandel has a brambly red fruit profile with aromas of red boysenberries, raspberries and black pepper alongside spicy notes of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors fill the palate, dominated by raspberry jam, fresh boysenberry and pomegranate with a black pepper note. The finish is soft, with supple tannins creating a firm, yet lush mouthfeel. Though this wine is created for immediate enjoyment, it will age gracefully for several years.

Winemaker's Notes:

Background: A wild grass, the Love Grass, often grows in the vineyards surrounding the d‘Arenberg winery. During vintage, the sticky, Velcro-like, long stemmed flowers of the Love Grass affectionately attach themselves to the vineyard workers' socks. This Shiraz will also linger with you and, as such, the family thought it fitting to name this wine 'The Love Grass'.

The aromas are complex and intriguing. Each time you put the glass to your nose there is something new to discover. For what was a ripe year the red and dark fruits are fresh and lifted with cinnamon spice and cured meat adding complexity.

The palate is equally complex with plum, boysenberry and raspberry alongside more savoury characters of charred meat, black olive and dark chocolate. There is a lot to take in with no shortage of characters to uncover but chalky dusty tannins pull the wine into focus nicely and provide for a long finish.

This wine is drinking well on release and could also be cellared for up to ten years.

Additional wines from d'Arenberg:

About d'Arenberg:

One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d'Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently. The original vineyards were established by Joseph Osborn in 1912 in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. A century on, the estate has grown to 345 acres, and the mantle now rests with fourth-generation winemaker, Chester Osborn. By maintaining a focus on traditional winemaking and nurturing their old-vine material, the Osborn clan has successfully established themselves as one of the country's leading producers of concentrated wines that are full of character.

The palate is awash with flavors of boysenberry, cassis, star anise and menthol. The structural tannins are supple and fine grained. Overall, the wine displays excellent line and length of flavor. An outstanding, youthful, fresh and vibrant Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from a tenanious vintage.

The domaine's « Flagship » wines, evoking the Mediterranean in aroma and taste.

Possessing a beautiful garnet dress, this wine develops a bouquet of mature blueberry, spices and the scents of Garrigue evoking the Mediterranean in its perfumes and its flavors. Fresh in mouth, the wine then evolves with volume and roundness in a very beautiful balance. The finish is long, ending with a silky structure of perfectly ripe tannins. Ready to drink this wine will be, however, reach its height in 5 years.

Composed of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache Noir.

The color is deep purple with aromas of blueberry, plum and blackberry fruit, anise, allspice and mushroom. It has bright raspberry and deeper plum flavors with cinnamon, vanilla and toast notes on the long, silky finish. Pair this rich Pinot Noir with beef tenderloin and sautéed spinach.

Bold enough to pair with a roasted rosemary rack of lamb along with new spring red potatoes.

My Notes:

About Fattoria Viticcio:

Founded in 1960 by Lucio and Franca Landini, the Viticcio Estate still stands above the picturesque town of Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Their focus is to produce high-quality wines worthy of an international clientele while at the same time respecting the traditions and viticulture of the region. This focus remains the same today under the direction of the second generation, Alessandro Landini.

The estate comprises more than 30 hectares of vines, all of which are farmed organically. Additionally, seven of those hectares are farmed biodynamically. Alessandro strongly believes that in order to produce high-quality wines you must first respect the land in which the vines are planted. To this end he uses no pesticides in his vineyards and fertilizes by planting things such as fava beans and barley between the rows of vines, allowing them to flower, and then plowing them back into the soil to add important nutrients. A handful of wines see some time in the smaller barriques, but the large majority is aged in large botti. The wines of Viticcio represent an important combination of traditional, time-honored techniques with modern-day technology and respect for the environment.

Hints of black olive and licorice are balanced with nuances of cedar and vanilla from fine grain French oak. The palate exudes generous ripe cassis flavours with tobacco leaf, supported by subtle integration of oak leading to a rich, smooth finish.

About Jacob's Creek:

With over 150 years of making wine in the Barossa Valley, Jacob's Creek's winemaking philosophy is to make high quality wines in a contemporary Australian style, which are fresh, elegant, great tasting and show true varietal character.
