Winemaker's Notes:

Our Reserve uses fruit primarily from Ridgecrest Vineyards, our oldest estate vineyard, a 55-acre vineyard on a 176-acre property. Beginning in 1980, this site pioneered grapegrowing on Ribbon Ridge, a small ridge on the western end of the Chehalem Mountains. Soils are a Willakenzie soil called Wellsdale, a transition soil series exhibiting characteristics of both volcanic and ocean sedimentary underlying structures. The rich, supple black cherry and blackberry fruits are characteristic of Ridgecrest Vineyards and the Willakenzie soil type. Excellent acidity, silky texture, and a long finish are hallmarks of the vineyard site, being relatively high in elevation, mature in vine age, and deeply rooted.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Chehalem:

About Chehalem:

With two vineyards on either end of Chehalem Ridge and one in the Dundee Hills, Chehalem is dedicated to reflecting as purely as possible what the vineyard has produced. With minimal processing and without compromising great fruit, Chehalem wines promise good ageing but are very drinkable young. Production quantities of all Chehalem wines are limited, to assure ultimate winemaking control.

Winemaker's Notes:

Kuyen, which means "moon" in the Chilean native language Mapuche, is made by Espinoza and his wife Marina on their small estate in the Maipo Valley. It is a wine made to honor "the ancient traditions and cosmic vision of the people of the earth." This is a 49% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Carmenere blend made with grapes from the Maipo Valley. Kuyen's grapes are biodynamically grown, which Espinoza believes gives his fruit a superior expression of terroir.

The Kuyen blend is aged in French oak barrels, then bottled and aged an additional six months in the cellar prior to release. This vintage shows deep color with intense aromas of dark fruit, spice and minerals. The palate has good texture with volume, body and a long finish.

My Notes:

About Antiyal:

Álvaro Espinoza is one of the finest winemakers in South America today, as well as one of the foremost biodynamic winemakers in the world. His celebrated wine Antiyal is often referred to as Chile's first "garage wine." Antiyal produces fewer than 400 cases of wine a year in the sleepy Maipo Valley town of Alta Jahuel.

About Kofererhof:

"Gunter Kerschbaumer is an unusually talented young man who makes some of Italy's best white wines. Unbelievably good sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau and kerner arise from splendidly situated vineyards at close to 700 meters above sea level. These are wines that will put to rest any preconceived notions you may have on those grapes. His riesling is quickly becoming one of the best Italian examples of this variety as well." - International Wine Cellar

Acquired and managed by the Kerschbaumer family since 1940, the Kofererhof estate has existed in southern Tyrol, a region that is as Austrian in spirit as it is Italian, for over 850 years. In 1995, the winery started to bottle its own wines after having sold its fruit to local wineries for years. Kofererhof’s tiny 5 hectares of vines are located at the base of the Dolomite mountains between 700 and 800 meters above sea level. At this high altitude, the variation in temperatures from day to night is ideal, and the carefully tended, high-density vineyards yield intensely fragrant, concentrated and well-balanced wines. All grapes are harvested by hand, and attention to detail is paramount in this limited production winery. Farming practices are currently of low environmental impact but will become fully organic in the near future. Indigenous yeasts are used, except in the rare instance of a particularly challenging vintage. All wines are fermented and aged in temperature-controlled tanks with the exception of the Pinot Grigio, which is partially aged in large casks of Acacia wood. Total production for the estate is only around 3,500 cases of wine per year! The quality of these wines raises the bar for all whites from Alto Adige.

Kofererhof is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed. The Alto Adige region supports the growers with consultants and technical staff for the monitoring of insects and diseases. The region frowns on the use of harmful products as the vineyards are located near villages and towns. To curb fungus, growers use sulfur and copper-based products. Only organic fertilizers and manure are used and cover crops between the rows of vines add additional nutrients (in the new vineyards low growing crops are sown). When needed, the soil is tilled with manure and cut up plant substance. Very low doses of added SO2 in the wines help preserve them.

About Vina Sastre:

Hermanos Sastre is a family-run winery located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, in the town of La Horra. The DO of Ribera del Duero is located in the mountainous northern-central Spain. It's high alpine valleys of the Duero River provide respite from the hot Spanish climate and provide a long ripening season from the cool nights. Pedro Sastre is the winemaker in charge of overseeing all operations of the winery. The winery produces a range of wines -- from a "Tinto", with 7 months barrel age to Gran Reservas, all from Tinto del Pais (Tempranillo) grape. They also own a unique vineyard site called Pago Santa Cruz. Pago Santa Cruz has vineyards over sixty years old planted by Pedro's grandfather. In exceptional vintages, Pago Santa Cruz appears under its own label.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon is mid to full depth in color, showing a purple-crimson hue. The nose displays fully ripened fruit with red berries, curry leaf, cassis and oak barrel spiciness. This wine is generous and inviting, opening to plush red fruits building to a full mid palate fleshiness then leading to a complex meld of fruit, briar and edgy tannins. This modern styled Cabernet and, though the palate sensations are long, they are refreshing. Enjoy with Tapas!
My Notes:

Additional wines from Ringbolt:

About Ringbolt:

Western Australia's rugged southwest coastline is littered with shipwrecks – the wreck of the Ringbolt being one of them. Sunk in the late 1800s in what is now known as Ringbolt Bay, located on the southern tip of the Margaret River wine region, adjacent to Cape Leeuwin.

Defined by the oceans, the Margaret River region enjoys a temperate, maritime climate with high winter rainfall and pristine, robust sea breezes to cool the precious fruit – wonderful conditions for growing superior Cabernet Sauvignon. The name Ringbolt honors the heritage of the Margaret River wine region.

Senior Red Winemaker Peter Gambetta has over 20 vintages of winemaking experience which have seen him working in some of the world's premium wine-growing regions, most recently spending the 2005 European vintage in Bordeaux. This international perspective is part of what makes him an invaluable asset to Ringbolt. Working extensively in Coonawarra and Wrattonbully vineyards has given him an intimate understanding of premium Cabernet Sauvignon and outstanding red winemaking experience and skills.

Having always taken a meticulous approach to his winemaking, Peter believes in attention to detail at every stage. From harvesting at optimal ripeness and fruit flavor, barrel maturation and to continuing to monitor the wine once in bottle - ensuring they are released only at their most enjoyable.

Additional wines from Ridge Vineyards:

About Ridge Vineyards:

Ridge's history begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor and prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He planted vineyards and constructed a winery of redwood and native limestone in time to produce the first vintage of Monte Bello in 1892. The historic building now serves as the Ridge production facility.

Though Ridge began as a Cabernet winery, by the mid-60s it had produced several Zinfandels including the Geyserville. In 1972, Lytton Springs joined the line-up and the two came to represent an important part of Ridge production. Known primarily for its red wines, Ridge has also made limited amounts of Chardonnay since 1962.

The Ridge approach is straightforward: find the most intense and flavorful grapes, guide the natural process, draw all the fruit's richness into the wine. Decisions on when to pick, when to press, when to rack, what varietals and what parcels to include and when to bottle, are based on taste. To retain the nuances that increase complexity, Ridge winemakers handle the grapes and wine as gently as possible. There are no recipes, only attention and sensitivity.

Additional wines from Ricasoli:

About Ricasoli:

The House of Ricasoli has had an indelible impact on the history and quality of Chianti. According to Burton Anderson, "it is the world's oldest winery," having produced wines since 1141. Not only did an early Baron help create the appellation system, but in 1874, Baron Bettino Ricasoli (The "Iron Baron") developed the Sangiovese-based formula that came to be known as the official blend for Chianti.

After a few years of foreign ownership in the 60s and 70s, the Ricasoli winery is back in Italian hands -in fact, Francesco Ricasoli, the 32nd Baron of the original family, gained control in 1993. He has replanted several vineyards with improved clones, has improved the vinification technology, and has invested in new cooperage.

Barone Ricasoli is a commercial group that owns several estates throughout Tuscany. At its winery, it vinifies its own and other estates' wines, including those of Castello di Brolio. The Ricasoli family continues to show its commitment to quality and innovation. It was a leader of the Super Tuscan movement, with the production of its award-winning Casalferro. It produces a full range of Tuscan wines, ranging from Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG to the newest addition to the line, Formulae, a 100% Sangiovese aged in American oak casks.
