Winemaker's Notes:

Deep red. The nose has some complex developed notes with roasted meats, aniseed and red capsicum. The palate is rich, full bodied and enticing with plums, roasted capsicum and vegemite notes. The maturation in French oak has led to some subtle spice lift and a lovely roundness and richness on the palate. There are some fleshy tannins which will make this wine an ideal match to rich dishes, especially red meats or game. The flavors linger in the mouth.

52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Malbec, 18% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Thorn-Clarke:

About Thorn-Clarke:

The Thorn-Clarke family already has a long history in the Barossa - six generations of involvement in the region's world famous wine industry. The name Thorn-Clarke derives literally from the relationship between two long time Barossa families. The winery owners are David and Cheryl Clarke (nee Thorn) and their son Sam is manager of the winery. Cheryl's brother, David Thorn manages the Mount Crawford and Kabininge vineyards for Thorn-Clarke Wines. Her father Ron Thorn has one of the oldest Shiraz vineyards in Australia and possibly the world on the Thorn family property 'Clifton' outside of Angaston. Earliest records show this old vineyard was in existence in 1854.

Husband and wife, David and Cheryl Clarke both have deep family roots in the Barossa. Cheryl Clarke's family, the Thorn's, have been grape growers in the Barossa since the 1870's.

David Clarke's family were pioneers in the Barossa as well but most famously in the mining of gold from the Barossa Goldfields. One of his ancestors was James Goddard who was the responsible for opening the Lady Alice gold mine in the Barossa goldfields and which was the largest gold mine in South Australia at the time. It has been David's love of the wine industry that saw the planting of the Kabininge vineyard outside of Tanunda in 1987. The planting of the Kabininge vineyard represented the start of a deeper involvement by the family in the Barossa wine industry.

#46 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

Non Confunditur is a wine that shows definite character, it is full-bodied with soft-tannins and has a long lasting finish. This blend made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese shows exciting power, with the inherent sweetness of the Merlot acting as a bridge between the firm earthiness of the Sangiovese grape, the spicy blackcurrant of the Cabernet and the warm red fruit of the Syrah. The result is a generous, round red wine for early to mid-term drinking with nice aromas of currant and generous fruit flavors, which are versatile enough to develop more depth over several months in bottle.

Additional wines from Tenuta di Argiano:

About Tenuta di Argiano:

After this estate was acquired by Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano, the philosophy changed whereby quality and personality became the dominant priorities. In order to achieve these goals, Sebastiano Rosa was appointed as General Manager of the Estate. Having spent six years at the University of California at Davis, a two year tenure at Chateau Lafite Rothschild and three years at Sassacaia, he brings a strong mix of experience. In addition, Dr. Giacomo Tachis, probably the most well known winemaker in Italy today, became the oenologist. His legacy includes Sassacaia, Tignanello and Solaia, to name a few. Argiano's vineyards are located in the Montalicino area where a perfect microclimate assures a super ecological system. Varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese are planted. These grapes have not traditionally been part of the Montalcino area.

Dark opaque violet with deep crimson hue, this wine bursts from the glass a dense melange of berry fruits, dark plum, licorice, and fragrant spice. The palate displays layers of sweet fruit with creamy mocha oak, black pepper hints and superbly balanced tannins, seeming to last for an eternity.

This is an Old Vine Zinfandel at its essence. The sophisticated Toreador captures the true varietal character of Monte Rosso Zinfandel with expressive flavors and intense aromas of black raspberry, plum jam and dark black cherry, surrounded by rich tannins and a peppery, clove spice that are supple on the palate. Hints of dark chocolate and nuances of vanilla from the oak influence linger in a long and lasting finish. This elegantly concentrated Zinfandel can be enjoyed now, but will also age well over the next ten years.

This vintage of Old Vine Zinfandel displays wonderful aromas of white pepper, cardamom and black cherries. After a few minutes in the glass, additional elements of tobacco, espresso and chocolate begin to shine through. The essence of these old vine vineyards are fully displayed on the palate with succulent fruits such as plum, blueberries, and strawberries. The tannins are smooth and well integrated creating a silky experience, leading to a long and lingering finish.

Additional wines from Dry Creek Vineyard:

About Dry Creek Vineyard:

In 1972, when David S. Stare opened the doors to Dry Creek Vineyard, it was the first new winery to be built in the Valley since Prohibition. Dry Creek created the first Sonoma Fume Blanc, originated the Dry Creek Valley AVA, and was an early advocate for Bordeaux-style blending.

Today, Dry Creek Vineyard is committed to vineyard diversity, vinifying individual lots of fruit separately, and then blending carefully for each final cuvee. Dry Creek Vineyard is also a leader in the stewardship of pre-Prohibition Zinfandel vines and vineyards, and has isolated a clone, called the "Heritage Clone," which is bottled separately from their "Old Vines" Zinfandel (containing wine only from vines no younger than 50 years old), and which has made very promising wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

The "Biker" came from the west side of Paso Robles with a vengeance. Riding off the hills of Westside Paso from the Dusi and Preston Zin vineryards, where rocky, calcareous soils result in low yield vines, producing fruit of intense concentration. A splash of Mourvedre lends an extra kick in the mid-palate. The Biker has blackberry, anise spice and vanilla on the nose. Rich, black fruit and spice, long in the mouth lingering to a silky vanilla oak finish. A massive in-your-face Zin- taking no prisoners. Biker rocks!
My Notes:

Additional wines from Four Vines:

About Four Vines:

In 1994 Four Vines Winery kicked into gear featuring eclectic, appellation-specific Zins, and one kick-ass no-oak "Naked" Chardonnay. They named their Zins Biker, The Sophisticate and Maverick. Rich, succulent, fruit-generous wines that pair incredibly well with food. The winery relocated to Paso Robles where they began experimenting with Rhone varietals; bigger, headier wines that are positively explosive in flavor and form. No matter the wine, Four Vines has always brought a refreshing, irreverent attitude to the industry. Today, the winery sources fruit from all over the state of California and crushes mainly on the Central Coast and in Sonoma County. This allows grapes to arrive at their peak of cool morning temperatures to the crush pad. It all starts in the vineyard…don't let anyone tell you anything else. In late 2010, Derek Benham acquired Four Vines from its founders and moved the winery operations back up north to Sonoma County where it originally started. Four Vines is now in a position to reach its full potential as a category leader in Unoaked Chardonnay and Zinfandel. The story continues...

Jammy fruit from beginning to end—starting with aromas of blueberry pie, nutmeg and pepper. In the mouth, flavors expand to include boysenberry, plum, blueberry and spice. This full bodied wine has a bold tannin structure and balanced acidity that lead to a long finish. This big wine is anything but "petite."

Additional wines from HandCraft:

About HandCraft:

Cheryl Indelicato’s life reflects a joyful meeting of her inspiring, bounteous California home and her cherished Italian heritage.

As part of one of California’s oldest winemaking families, Cheryl has been in the wine industry since she was a little girl, doing odd jobs at the winery and in the vineyards with her siblings and cousins. Today, that group of hard working kids represents the current leadership of DFV Wines: the third generation of the family owned and operated vineyards and wineries.

Originally built on the hard work of patriarch Gasparé Indelicato, the company went from farming grapes to making its first vintage of wine in 1935 after Prohibition ended. “We have such a strong family tradition with wine, and that’s important to me,” Cheryl explains. “My grandfather, Gasparé, learned winemaking from his father. And my Dad and his brothers learned it from Gasparé. I knew I would work toward continuing that legacy.”

Although Cheryl grew up working at the winery, her parents insisted that all of “Generation Three” graduate from college and gather outside experience by working elsewhere for at least three years before coming back to the family business. Taking this sage advice, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business in 1989 from California State University, Stanislaus and a Registered Nursing degree in 1985.

It did not take long for Cheryl to return to the winery. Launching her official career in 1990, she worked in various facets of the business; from sales and marketing to human resources to public relations and is now proprietor for HandCraft wines.

HandCraft wines provide Cheryl with the opportunity to recreate the fruit forward, delicious wines that she remembered on the family table when she was growing up. A dash of Italian varietals are added to the final wine blends and the result is simply delicious. It’s what makes HandCraft wines easy to enjoy, distinctive and memorable.

About Fattoria del Cerro:

Fattoria del Cerro is not only Montepulciano's largest private estate, it is also the one with the finest and most complete line of wines, fruit of years of work on the part of its directors, first Guido Guardigli and now Guido Sodano, and most of all to the inspired winemaking of Lorenzo Landi, who first revealed his formidable talent with their wines.
