Winemaker's Notes:

The 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a complex and refined wine that develops beautifully in the glass to reveal multi-layered nuances of aromas. It has a dark ruby color and an enticing nose of cassis, black truffles and violets. On the palate, the wine has an elegant attack and bursts with flavors of fresh forest fruit, potpourri and Asian spices. It has a long finish with smooth well-integrated tannins. With proper cellaring it should give drinking pleasure through 2026.

Our 2006 Napa Valley, a blend of wine from vineyards throughout the appellation, is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2007 and transferred the wine to 100% new American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine's primary elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine was then aged in barrel for approximately 25 months and another 20 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release.

About Silver Oak Napa Valley:

Silver Oak Cellars was started in 1972 with a simple driving philosphy - to focus production on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. What's more, they resolved to create a wine with a style all its own: not another hard, tannic red wine requiring years of aging to enjoy, but a wine of fully developed flavors and a velvety soft texture on the day it is released for sale.

Silver Oak Cellars produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wine’s flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the wood’s delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the world's most elegant wines.

Sandalwood, hazelnut, and powdered cocoa spicy aromas waft around a core of plum and dark stone fruit. Lively black plum and blueberry flavors transition seamlessly to a walnut, toasted almond finish. This elegantly balanced will continue to bring pleasure for years to come.

Additional wines from Mazzoni:

About Mazzoni:

Two of the greatest winemaking families, two of the world's most prolific grapes, and one wine. The first release of Mazzoni - the fruit of a partnership between the Franceschi (Montalcino) and Terlato (Napa) families - marks a historic collaboration between two of the greatest names in winemaking today. The families' relationship began more than 30 years ago, when the Terlato family began importing Franceschi's historic Brunello di Montalcino from Italy - one of Italy's most coveted and collected wines, made from 100% Sangiovese, the quintessential Tuscan grape. Long considered one of the top producers of Napa Valley Merlot, Terlato has now joined with the iconic Franceschi family to produce a classic, elegant Super Tuscan - a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese grown in Montalcino, combining state-of-the-art winemaking technology with Old World terroir and tradition.

Passion for quality, respect for tradition, and a steadfast belief in innovation are the principles that led to the birth of this extraordinary Super Tuscan: a hand-crafted wine, blended using estate-grown Merlot and Sangiovese sourced from one of the Franceschi's oldest vineyards in Montalcino, and vinified using the same winemaking technology that has made Napa Valley one of the greatest producers of world-class Merlot. Mazzoni represents a supreme marriage of Old and New World winemaking, guided by shared family values and a desire to create a superior wine - to drink today and tommorrow.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Phoenix name recognizes the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Tolley in South Australia in 1888, the 'The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company.' The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Penley Estate:

About Penley Estate:

Established in 1988, by Kym Tolley, a direct descendant of the famous Penfold and Tolley winemaking families – the name Penley is an amalgam of the first three and last three letters from each title.

Tolley has over 25 years of winemaking experience, including being involved in the making of many vintages of the famous Penfolds Grange. The estate is located in the heart of Coonawarra, with the vines planted in the famed "terra rossa" soils – bright red top-soils overlaying soft free-draining limestone.

Critically acclaimed as one of Coonawarra's leading estates, and voted as one of the International Wineries of the Year 2001 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, while the Reserve Cabernet voted best wine of Coonawarra 2001, as judged by winemaking peers and critics.

The Penley Estate signature style comprises distinct, precise, terrior driven wines – not overly oaked or excessively alcoholic. They display ripe clean fruit with true regional character – the senior wines will age for many years.

Winemaker's Notes:

This Cabernet Sauvignon has a vivid ruby color with a dark purple tinge. The nose is rich, displaying aromas of blackberry and blueberry with hints of oak and cinnamon. This is a smooth wine with good structure and a long finish tasting of red fruit.
My Notes:

About Prelius:

Prelius is the name given by the Romans to the ancient costal lake of Prile. Already with the Etruscans the land surrounding the lake was a flourishing community dedicated to fishing and to the commerce of salt. The coastal lake used to lay from the Argentario peninsula to Castiglione della Pescaia, separated from the sea by a sandy strip that is now the marvelous pine-wood of Grosseto. Prile, where our vineyards are located, is 2 miles away from Castiglione della Pescaia along the slopes of the hilly amphitheater surrounding the ancient lake.

In this hilly amphitheater called Prelius, the vineyard is organically farmed by the Stianti Mascheroni family flourishes. This vineyard, also called Prelius, is the first venture outside of Chianti Classico for the Stianti Mascheroni family, leaders in Tuscany's organic viticultural movement.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, rich full-bodied wine with great tannic structure and mouth-feel. It has a garnet color and a nose of ripe boysenberries, cherry liqueur, dark chocolate, sandalwood and a hint of roasting meat. On the palate, it is mouth-coating and incredibly rich in umami. It has a very long, savory finish with the slight grip of fine-grained tannins. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2030.

About Silver Oak Alexander Valley:

Great wine is meant to be savored with family and friends. This belief is at the heart of Silver Oak Cellars, where we have crafted extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon for over 35 years. Designed to be deliciously drinkable from the day it is released, Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon grows more supple and luxurious over time.

Silver Oak's Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is produced at our picturesque Geyserville estate, set amid the rolling hills of northern Sonoma County.

The Tudor-style estate features a massive flagstone arch that leads to a central courtyard with a fountain. High, arched glass doors open on the tasting room with its rustic stone fireplace. Designed to resemble the American oak barrels that are a signature of Silver Oak, the oak tasting bar is accented with steel barrel hoops. Beautifully etched glass doors highlight the stone-lined wine library next door, which contains an enormous oak barrel carved with the Silver Oak logo.

Our 2007 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon combines elegance and depth in a balanced expression of this classic California vintage. It has a dark ruby color with a garnet edge and a complex nose of sandalwood, cedar, cassis, black cherry, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. On the palate, it is extremely rich and mouth-coating and has a long finish of concentrated fruit and spice with a slight tannic grip. This wine is remarkable in how it continues to evolve in the glass over the course of a meal. It has great maturity of aromas and tannins at moderate alcohol. With proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2033.

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine also available as part of the Trophy Reds

Our 2007 Twomey Merlot is a beautiful example of what this noble variety can achieve in an excellent vintage: suppleness, complexity and great expression of berry fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a nose of fresh, ripe black cherry and blackberry, dark chocolate and what the French call "torifaction," the alluring smell of roasting coffee. On the palate, it has an attack full of explosive fruit and violets prolonged by plenty of umami, the savory fifth taste. It has a long finish echoing berry fruit and chocolate and grainy well-integrated tannins that promise excellent cellaring potential. This Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure through 2022.

Additional wines from Twomey Cellars by Silver Oak:

About Twomey Cellars by Silver Oak:

Twomey Cellars originated with a remarkable vineyard, the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley, which the Duncan family – owners of Silver Oak Cellars – acquired in 1999. Planted with the finest French clones in well-drained volcanic soils, the Merlot that is grown there possesses such extraordinary complexity that it calls for a wine of its own. Silver Oak's winemaker, Daniel Baron, developed his passion for Merlot during the early 1980s while working in Pomerol and St. Emilion. He had always hoped to make a California Merlot with a French sensibility, but for many years lacked access to fruit with the characteristics he required. When the Duncan family acquired Soda Canyon Ranch and Daniel realized it was planted with top-flight French clones, Daniel’s long-held dream of producing a Napa Valley Merlot with depth and concentration became reality.

The Duncan Family’s spirit of innovation would lead them to discover new varietals when in 2000, they secured the nine-acre West Pin vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, legendary for its extraordinary Pinot Noirs. Several years later, they acquired a winery in Healdsburg where the Pinot Noirs are now produced. Twomey is dedicated to producing Pinot Noir that achieves the greatest balance & expression from four top California appellations, including Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Anderson Valley and Santa Maria Valley. Twomey’s newest offering is Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp, refreshing wine that originates at the family’s estate vineyard in Calistoga. Today, Twomey Cellars is run by Managing Partners and brothers David and Tim Duncan. Founding winemaker Daniel Baron and Winemaker Ben Cane carry out their vision of making wines that eloquently express their vineyard and vintage.
