Winemaker's Notes:

The 2006 Merus is deep inky purple in color with intense aromas of black cherries, layered with exotic spice, hints of cinnamon, mocha, dark chocolate, cassis and blackberries. In the mouth, the entry possesses tremendous intensity and a massive palate impression. Mouth coating flavors with an abundance of dark cherry fruit on the opening followed by dark dense fruit, dark chocolate and exotic spices together with abundant velvety tannins, gives this wine its structure and rich multi-layered texture. This wine expands in the mouth for a long finish. Given its youthful character, the 2006 Merus will benefit from cellaring for at least five to fifteen years.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Merus:

About Merus:

Merus is a small, ultra luxury wine brand in the Napa Valley that creates highly-coveted wine in small quantities. Hand-made, using the finest techniques and processes, this wine has been rated as one of the country's top Cabernet Sauvignons.

Merus was started in 1998 with the mission of producing handcrafted wine of uncompromising quality and distinction. Their objective is to produce small amounts of age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena, Stags Leap, and Coombsville vineyards. Merus views winemaking in a conservationist light, whereby optimizing vineyard quality is the single most important factor in achieving superlative wine quality. Therefore, they have established long-term relationships with only those winegrowers willing to work within the parameters of their rigorous vineyard demands. Merus is a labor of love that truly expresses the definition of great wine in the bottle.

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Syrah.

Dark and densely concentrated, expressive aromas of blackberry, currants and subtle notes of thyme and cinnamon lead to flavors of blackberry, black plum and a bit of black olive. Knit together with big, mouth-coating tannins, this is an engagingly well-structured, bold-statement wine.

Additional wines from Robert Mondavi Winery:

About Robert Mondavi Winery:

For more than 40 years, Robert Mondavi Winery has been the symbol of Napa Valley. Founded in 1966, it was the first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades following the repeal of Prohibition (1933), and went on to establish the foundation for modern California winemaking. Robert Mondavi Winery's mission-styled architecture, with the expansive archway and bell tower designed by Cliff May, has become an enduring landmark that honors California's history. With the philosophy that great wines reflect their origins, Robert Mondavi Winery pursues the fullest expression of the terroir of its Napa Valley vineyards: the historic To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville American Viticultural Area (AVA), and the Wappo Hill Vineyard in the Stags Leap Vineyard AVA.

Additional wines from Terlato Family Vineyards:

About Terlato Family Vineyards:

When Anthony Terlato and his sons Bill and John became winery owners and vintners in 1996, they started with one goal in mind: excellence. The concept was to produce wines that were consistent in quality and as important as those the Terlato family imported and marketed during the last half century. The bar was already set high, because they are associated with the best. The Terlatos invested in vineyards, and state-of-the-art equipment at each of their four wineries in California. Through friendships cultivated over the past fifty years with numerous vineyard and winery owners, they were able to assemble a top notch management team and an elite wine-producing group. This investment resulted in quantum leaps of quality at each of their properties. Now, with the pieces in place, they challenged the winemakers to produce best in class wines for each of the most important grape varieties in the most important appellations in California. This is the vision brought to their namesake label, Terlato Family Vineyards.

Additional wines from Chateau Ste. Michelle:

About Chateau Ste. Michelle:

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery combines Old World winemaking with New World innovation and is best known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau Ste. Michelle receives some of the highest accolades in the industry, including "American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast for 2004 and "2005 Winery of the Year" by Restaurant Wine. In addition, the winery's Eroica Riesling, crafted from a partnership with German winemaker Ernst Loosen, has been named to Wine Spectator's prestigious "Top 100" wines list for five consecutive years.

Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the few premium wineries in the world with two state-of-the-art wineries, one devoted to whites and another to reds. This dedicated approach to winemaking allows winemaker Bob Bertheau to build winemaking programs to the unique specifications of red and white wines. While all of Chateau Ste. Michelle's vineyards are located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains where the climate is dry and sunny, Bob Bertheau makes the award winning white wines in Woodinville, 15 miles northeast of Seattle. The winery's expansive, 87-acre estate hosts more than 250,000 visitors annually for tours, tastings, dinners and outdoor summer concerts.

Winemaker's Notes:

Original Wine Note: The 2003 vintage got a late start because of a cool, wet spring. Overall, the weather conditions trended on the cool side, with a very damp April. A warm spell during flowering fueled a growth spurt, but as the season progressed and temperatures moderated, it looked as if harvest would be late. Eight-to-ten very warm days in September helped move development along. The grapes for the 2003 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon were handpicked between September 19 and October 28. 2007 Tasting Note:

Fresh fruit pops right now with blackberry, blueberry, cassis and fruit basket like characteristics.
Sweet oak, vanilla and brown spice with brown sugar notes.
Rich, ripe tannins.
Touch of orange zest off the top and hints of mint and cocoa.

Winemaker's Notes:

The diverse terroirs of four hallmark vineyards (Beckstoffer To Kalon, Hyde, Stagecoach and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane) harmonize in dense concentration for a multi-dimensional cabernet sauvignon of great depth and length. Aromas of lavender, anise and baker's cocoa are the prelude to a firmly-structured, deep garnet palate of black currant, cassis and fresh tobacco. Subtle floral accents and bolder graphite notes persist through the mid-palate, leading to an earthy, lengthy finish that finds tannins and subtle acidity in perfect balance.

Blend: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc

The 2008 Faust is a worthy successor to the highly lauded 2007 vintage in Napa Valley. The wine opens with aromas of red and black cherries, hints of violets and warm spices. A lush, full entry on the palate with blackberry, cassis, nutmeg and dark chocolate flavors leads to a plush, supple mouthfeel. A complex finish lingers with dark fruit and plenty of richness.

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot

My Notes:

Additional wines from Faust:

About Faust:

Faust, the wine, celebrates a legend which has inspired many great minds, among them the German poet Goethe, from whose masterpiece we draw our inspiration. In Goethe's most famous work, the aging scholar Dr. Faust barters his soul in the afterlife in exchange for another chance at youth. He gets his chance, yet ultimately his soul is saved by love.

Faust is the epitome of the style that has made Napa Cabernet Sauvignon world renowned: bold and powerful, yet elegant and concentrated. Top Cabernet Sauvignon lots are selected from vineyards Agustin Huneeus owns in Rutherford, a Napa Valley appellation synonymous with the best of Napa Valley Cabernet, as well as the up and coming, soon to be named Tulocay viticultural area south of Atlas Peak.

Both vineyards are carefully tended to produce low yields and great concentration. The grapes are double sorted and crushed at Quintessa, one of the Napa Valley's most technologically sophisticated wineries, featuring gravity-flow design, oak fermentation and naturally cooled caves.

Winemaker's Notes:

We fermented the grapes using only yeasts that naturally occur on the grapes and allowed the wine to gain flavors and color from extended skin contact. Each lot is aged separately for several months, and then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. After blending, the wine spent another year and half in barrel to completely harmonize before bottling. This is an elegant wine with aromas of black cherries and licorice and a long finish. Full bodied with smooth tannins, it's the perfect partner with filet mignon, grilled steak or lamb chops.

Additional wines from Grgich Hills Cellar:

About Grgich Hills Cellar:

Mike Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated "Paris Tasting" of 1976 in which a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When the results where in, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen Mike’s 1973 Montelena Chardonnay as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike Grgich a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.

Today, in Grgich Hills' 30th year, they remain committed to creating richly flavored, distinctive wines from certified organic Napa Valley vineyards that are farmed biodynamically. By all accounts they have succeeded. The new release of Cabernet Sauvignon just received a whopping 94 rating from Wine & Spirits and the Wine News awarded "Chardonnay of the Year" honors to their 2004 vintage. These world renowned Estate grown wines from prime Napa Valley vineyards are unique, delicious, and allocated.

Their flagship wine, Hillside Select, is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
