Winemaker's Notes:

Black cherry and vibrant dark berry fruits provide a lifted perfume, combined with the peppery notes, toasted spice and hints of cedar. Complimentary musk and earthiness add to the complexity of the aromas in this wine. The palate shows opulent ripe, yet fresh blackberries with plum fruit, dark choco-late and licorice characters; as well as a hint of spearmint. The wine is rich and full bodied, but has an elegant soft texture throughout and fine tannins that carry the fruit into a lingering finish.

Blend: 68% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot

My Notes:

Additional wines from Pillar Box:

About Pillar Box:

Named after the proprietor of the 19th century mail coach service which once ran through their property, the Longbottom family has created a new family tradition of winemaking with wines such as: Henry's Drive, Parson's Flat and Pillar Box.

During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of Southeastern Australia, horse-drawn coaches provided the only transportation of mail and passengers. The coach drivers reigned supreme on top of their coaches, and won the respect and admiration of their passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state, was a certain Mr. Henry John Hill. His operation drove directly through a property owned more recently by three generations of the Longbottom family of Padthaway. Routes were known as Drives, thus the family's wine business is today known as Henry's Drive.

Additional wines from St. Francis Winery:

About St. Francis Winery:

For more than four decades, the wines of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards have reflected the finest mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma County. Our founder, Joe Martin, fell in love with Sonoma Valley and established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971, planting 22 acres of Chardonnay and the first 60 acres of Merlot in Sonoma Valley. After achieving great success as a grower, Joe opened his own winery in 1979 with his business partner Lloyd Canton.

Today, a new generation of winemakers, Katie Madigan and Chris Louton, continues our long tradition of luscious, elegant, fruit-driven wines from Sonoma County grapes. We farm more than 400 acres of Certified Sustainable estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley, each with varying compositions of loam, clay and volcanic soils. We also nurture long-term relationships with top Sonoma County grape growers, giving the Winery access to some of the region's most coveted old vines Zinfandel and other varietals from acclaimed vineyards.

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale straw green in color, the 2011 Yalumba Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay offers enticing aromas of white peach, grapefruit and nougat – a complex interplay showing balance between ripe fruit and complexity from lees aging. The palate is distinctly medium-bodied with layers of white peach and nougat flavors, racy acidity and a persistent finish.

Chardonnay like this should be enjoyed with tempura vegetables.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Concannon:

About Concannon:

A historic and once-famous Livermore winery, Concannon was bought and sold several times in the 1980's by large conglomerates that were purchasing each other. Each sale resulted in a loss of focus, and the brand suffered. In 1992 Eric Wente of Wente Vineyards saved it from the jaws of destruction by assembling a group of eight investors to buy the winery. However, Concannon Vineyard is a totally separate company in both ownership and operation from Wente Vineyards.

Nestled amidst the vineyards and rolling hills along the Livermore Valley, Concannon has been widely recognized for crafting full-flavored, complex and award-winning wines. Ocean air pours through the Golden Gate each afternoon cooling the influence of the sun, and enabling the grapes to develop both the ripe sugars and firm acids that fine wine demands.

Concannon is perfectly positioned geologically, atop a 600-foot-deep bed of gravelly soil. These rocks require the vines to drive their roots deep into mineral-rich deposits, and it also keeps the grape and cluster size in moderation.

More than 140 of Concannon's 200 Livermore estate acres are Petite Sirah plantings grafted onto improved rootstocks. Over the decades, they have carefully tuned their planting and trellising to take full advantage of the unique terroir. The result: intensely flavored, memorable wines vintage after vintage.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep crimson purple in color, the 2010 Y Series Shiraz Viognier has aromas that are both wild and exotic. Blueberries, violets and cherry ripe notes from the Shiraz are elevated by the subtle influence of Viognier, which brings an alluring Turkish delight character. The well rounded palate is medium- to full-bodied and shows Turkish delight and cherry ripe flavors that are in harmony with the silky tannins.

Vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage was an excellent year for red wines in South Australia. Good rainfall was recorded during July and August 2008, proving invaluable as the following spring and early summer were extremely dry. A good rainfall in December was critical for the survival of the vineyards during the heat of late January and early February. The Shiraz vines weathered the heat well and were able to ripen in ideal conditions throughout February and March.

A deep crimson with violet hues, the Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier 2009 has an exotic nose with crushed raspberries, violets and Turkish delight, complemented by cinnamon, tea smoke and nuances of allspice. Succulent and layered, the palate has flavours of raspberries and violets. Cocoa powder tannins balance the juiciness of the palate and enhance the lingering finish.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee du Vatican has always been considered as the "younger brother" of the famous Chateauneuf du Pape. It is well worth questioning this assuption, however. This is a wine that has long since proved its credentials and which continues to astound us by its vitality. A true vintage wine, it reveals its attractions for the greatest pleasure of one and all. This endearing wine will always be present at table wherever good living and good humor are the rule.
My Notes:

About Cuvee du Vatican:

Jean-Marc Diffonty is the 4th generation at the domain and has been responsible, since his father Félician Diffonty left the charge in 1993. Félician Diffonty was the mayor of Chateauneuf du Pape 1965-1995 and it was him who in 1958 named the domaine Cuvée du Vatican - with blessings by the pope! In 1996 Jean Marc was made president of the Young Winemakers of Châteauneuf du Pape.

Winemaker's Notes:

This 2006 Nobility is the winery's premier wine, made from single berry selection in vineyard and winery, barrel fermented and aged in French oak cooperage. Fermentation is very slow and steady, lasting almost a month. The wine is then aged in French oak for 19 months till bottling.

"After several decades of working with botrytis, I have very distinct ideas about winemaking," explains Roger Harrison, the winemaker. "Balance is essential. How would I describe this wine? Layers of apricot jam, sweet fig, vanilla and honey, a balanced acidity with Asian spices, crème brulee and a rich honeyed finish."

My Notes:

About R.A. Harrison:

Roger Harrison for many in the wine industry has been known as Mr. Botrytis. Since 1983 he has worked at Beringer on the Nightingale wines made from highly concentrated grapes blessed with botrytis cinera (noble rot). These are very rare and hard to make wines. They require special winemaking expertise to maximize the rare weather conditions that produce these rare and noble wines. With the right winemaker and special weather conditions highly concentrated sweet wines such as Chateau Y'Quem in Sauterne, France, can be made.

After 25 years perfecting these rare dessert wines at Beringer, Roger launched his own winery, R.A. Harrison Family Cellars, dedicated to special botrytised wines. The winemaking and grapes selected for these wines are very similar to those used at Chateau Y'Quem.

The 2008 is like midnight in a glass. With abundant aromas and flavors of juicy purple fruit, smoked meat, spice, smoke, black plums and berry, it hugs the line between extract and elegance. In the mouth it's full and seamless from first taste through the long finish.

About Shafer Vineyards:

John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon, their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select, is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five (Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.
