Winemaker's Notes:

John Duval, formerly of Australia's iconic Penfolds Grange, chose the Columbia Valley as his "Sequel" for the continuation of his life's work with Syrah.

Dark, lush and layered with blackberry, ripe plum and blueberry flavors complimented by aromas of black tea and incense. The wine offers great depth and richness with a silky texture and vibrant finish.

Blend: 98% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon

My Notes:

Additional wines from Sequel:

About Sequel:

John Duval, formerly of Australia’s iconic Penfolds Grange, chose the Columbia Valley as his “Sequel” for the continuation of his life’s work with Syrah. Sequel is one of six distinct red wines from the Long Shadows Vintners Collection.

A generous and concentrated wine of great character, Sequel is notable for its deep purple hue, rich aromatics and layers of flavor. Almond, dark chocolate and cherry notes fill the glass, complimented by hints of black licorice, blackberry, cocoa powder and a touch of smoke.

Carefully selected, hand-harvested grapes are fermented in two to four-ton tanks using a variety of fermentation methods including “rack and return,” a technique John Duval frequently uses in Australia. This allows for gentle handling of the berries while extracting optimal color and richness. The wine is aged an average of 18 months in 65 percent new French oak barrels.

Duval uses Syrah from The Benches at Wallula and Alder Ridge for their dark flavored fruits. Red Mountain grapes provide the structure of the wine and Boushey Vineyard in Yakima Valley brings the elegance to Sequel.

Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding dark ruby red wine with bell pepper, smoke and eucalyputus aromas. The wine is aged for 18 months in one-, two and three-year-old French oak barrels, and then aged a further 2 months after bottling. It is an appetizing, smooth, well-rounded and tasteful wine. Black currants flavors, well-balanced with a long finish. Enjoy this fine Cabernet Sauvignon with red meats, cheeses and pasta.

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose features plum and bright red fruits with a hint of roasted meats, earth, pepper and exotic spices. The palate has some wonderful delicate fruit with blackberry joining the party. A touch of dried herbs adds a savory edge with fine, lifted tannins providing a long finish. It's cracking wine with sophistication—but don't worry it's still a lot of fun.

Additional wines from d'Arenberg:

About d'Arenberg:

One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d'Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently. The original vineyards were established by Joseph Osborn in 1912 in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. A century on, the estate has grown to 345 acres, and the mantle now rests with fourth-generation winemaker, Chester Osborn. By maintaining a focus on traditional winemaking and nurturing their old-vine material, the Osborn clan has successfully established themselves as one of the country's leading producers of concentrated wines that are full of character.

Winemaker's Notes:

This 2009 vintage showcases fruit character and ripeness, while tannin and acidity takes a backseat in contrast to 2008. Merlot from the 1976 block predominates in this vintages blend by a small amount, lending an overall softer more fruit driven approach than 2008. The Petit Verdot percentage is relatively high, accentuating the rose petal, blackberry and coffee bean notes.

As for previous vintages, this bottling delivers that complex interplay of ripe red and black fruits, savory and floral character, and a well matched structure-fruit balance. Very lengthy, layered finish. Expect a solid 6-8 years of development in the cellar, and possibly longer.

Blend: 39% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Franc

My Notes:

Additional wines from Seven Hills Winery:

About Seven Hills Winery:

The McClellan family has farmed in Eastern Washington since 1880. One hundred years later, in 1980, Casey McClellan and his father Jim began planting the now famous Seven Hills Vineyard at the south end of the Walla Walla Valley. After then earning his Master’s degree in Enology from UC Davis, Casey returned to Walla Walla with his wife Vicky to found Seven Hills Winery, the fifth winery in the Walla Walla Valley, in 1988. Casey remains Seven Hills’ sole winemaker to this day.

Seven Hills Vineyard is now regarded as one of the “ten most important vineyards in the world” by Wine & Spirits Magazine. In addition to Seven Hills Vineyard, Casey crafts wines from several of the best, old vine vineyards in Walla Walla and on Red Mountain, including Ciel du Cheval, Klipsun, and McClellan Estate.

Casey’ focus has always been on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietal reds, complimented by limited production of Alsatian varietal white wines. His vision is to produce wines that reflect the terroir of these sites with intense structure and pure varietal fruit character capable of graceful ageing.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Syrah defines the 2008 vintage character beautifully -- revealing a nose of pomegranate, black raspberry, flowers, black pepper and minerals. Interesting notes of grilled meat and wet stones accompany the usual Syrah flavors of black plum, pomegranate, and fresh herbs. Demonstrating uncommon elegance, balance and power, the finish is focused and long. This wine continues the 2008 trend of interesting, elegant wines with classical structure and memorable longevity.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

My Notes:

About Feather:

Feather winemaker and longtime Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, has built a reputation over four decades for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignons. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim. Now partnering with Allen Shoup, Randy brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State's Columbia Valley to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the region's finest vineyards. Feather is one of six distinct red wines from the Long Shadows Vintners collection.

Concentrated and beautifully balanced, Feather might best be described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." This incredibly complex wine offers an array of fresh berry aromas, complimented by spicy, dark cherry and dried currant flavors that persist on the palate.

Randy checks his favorite vineyards for balance throughout the growing season and returns during harvest to inspect the grapes before making the call to pick. This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon is hand-harvested, fermented in small lots and aged for an average of 22 months in new Vicard French oak barrels (Randy’s cooper of choice at Dunn Vineyards as well).

Winemaker's Notes:

Aromas of dried figs and cocoa powder, along with hints of tamarind and toasty oak are followed by intense violet and blueberry jam flavors beautifully integrated around a spicy core.

Allen Shoup named this wine in honor of his grandfather, Charles Chester, and his grandmother, Maggie Kidder. He has a purpose in mind; a vision really, and that is to make a wine that says, "this is how good Washington wine can be." Allen selected Gilles Nicault, former winemaker for Woodward Canyon, to bring the vision to fruition.

My Notes:

About Chester-Kidder:

Gilles Nicault brings his French winemaking talents to this New World blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and other classic red Bordeaux varieties. Chester-Kidder is one of six distinct red wines from the Long Shadows Vintners collection.

Aromas of dried figs and cocoa powder, along with hints of tamarind and toasty oak are followed by intense violet and blueberry jam flavors beautifully integrated around a spicy core.

French-born and trained winemaker Gilles Nicault has been making wine in the Columbia Valley since 1994. He continues to marvel at the growing region’s remarkable ability to produce wines that are both approachable and beautifully age-worthy due to the fruit’s balance and intensity. Styled to capture the complexity of the growing region, Chester-Kidder is aged for an average of 30 months in tight-grained French oak which allows the fruit to fully integrate prior to bottling.

The back bone of this wine is Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain and nearby Candy Mountain. Its deepness and darkness is Syrah from our estate’s Benches Vineyards at Wallula in Horse Heaven Hills.
