Winemaker's Notes:

The Jansz Premium NV Cuvée is based upon Jansz wines of several vintages. Specially selected and crafted individual batches from cool climate locations in Tasmania form this wine. Every site used to source grapes is specifically designated to growing fruit for sparkling wine.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Jansz:

About Jansz:

Jansz vineyards lie in the Tamar Valley along the Northern Tasmanian route at the heart of Tasmania's Pipers River region, an area known worldwide as "Sparkling Tasmania." With a mantle of red basalt soils and a cool climate moderated by its close proximity to the ocean, it is ideal for the slow ripening of fruit and lingering acidity so essential to the production of premium sparkling wine. In fact, the area's climate so resembled Champagne and Burgundy that several leading French Champagne houses considered basing new operations there.

ratings pedigree (past vintages):

1990 Wine Spectator rating: 91 points

Winemaker's Notes:

With a single holding of more than 330 acres at Guebwiller, Domaines Schlumberger is the largest Grands Crus producer in Alsace. All Schlumberger wines are estate-grown. Seventy five percent of the vines are planted on very steep, terraced slopes, requiring horses be used for field work. The outstanding quality of the wines is due largely to Schlumberger's superior vineyards, but also because yields are deliberately kept low.

With a base of red sandstone, the Kitterle's permeable soil also includes plenty of quartz mixed with sand and gravel. This combination results in extremely rich wines and a very low yield.

The Pinot Gris, previously called Tokay d'Alsace, is one of the oldest Alsace grapes. The varietal is characterized by buttery, smoky aromas and powerfully intense flavors.

A fruity wine offering a subtle, complex bouquet with honey aromas. Luscious fruit flavors accented with cream, vanilla and almond. Good natural acidity. An elegant and supple wine, it is suitable for all occasions. Enjoyable now, but can easily be kept 6-8 years.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Domaines Schlumberger:

About Domaines Schlumberger:

Domaines Schlumberger only harvests grapes from their own vineyards and are entirely dedicated to quality, which is achieved through deliberately producing very restricted yields per hectare.

The planting and judicious choice of grape varieties, pruning the vines, constantly surveying the grapes as they ripen, and the precious care that they are given enable a strict selection to be made during harvesting. Each plot, or even each bunch of grapes, will only be picked if it is completely ripe.

Wine & Spirits rating: 91 points

PRICE ON 9/22/2014: $15.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Covey Run Semillon Ice wine shows intense aromas of ripe mango and pineapple, with floral notes of honeysuckle, and honey. These aromas are balanced with zippy acid (think lemon vanilla cream sandwich cookies) and a long, lingering finish.

Imagine a cool, crisp winter night. Fresh snow is on the ground and the grapes are frozen on the vines. That's when these grapes are harvested. Pressed while still frozen, the grapes grudgingly yield a rich, concentrated juice that is fermented both in-tank and in new barrels.

The Covey Run Reserve wines are an expression of winemaker Kate Michaud's passion for Washington State's best-loved wines – Chardonnay, Merlot and Ice Wine. Handcrafted from the best of the best grapes from top vineyard sites in Washington's famed Columbia and Yakima valleys, these limited-production wines are rich and elegant with great intensity of flavor.

My Notes:

About Covey Run:

Since the release of the 1982 vintage, Covey Run has crafted high quality, price worthy wines from Washington’s Columbia River Valley, wines that have been embraced by consumers and journalists alike earning over 20 Wine Spectator Best Values awards. Led by winemaker Kate Michaud, Covey Run's portfolio includes delicious wines for every occasion, from stylish entertaining, to casual gatherings and picnics with family and friends.

Covey Run wines benefit from the long, sunny days and cool nights of eastern Washington vineyards. The whites are distinguished by crisp acidity and fresh fruit flavors, while the reds are aged in oak that never masks, but rather complements, the bold fruit flavors.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Spy Valley:

About Spy Valley:

The brand name Spy Valley is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station within a few kilometers of the winery. Situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka River are the vineyards of Johnson Estate. Established in 1993 by the Johnson family, Johnson Estate was one of the pioneering vineyard companies in the Marlborough sub-region and remains family-owned. Eight varieties of grapes grow over 380 acres of free-draining, stony soils producing exceptional fruit for Spy Valley Wines. In ten years, production has risen to place Spy Valley as one of Marlborough's leading family-owned companies. Youthful and exuberant wines are crafted using modern winemaking techniques by winemaker Paul Bougeois and his team.

Winemaker's Notes:

This deep red-purple colored wine has a rich nose with aromas of black fruits such as blackberries. Additional notes of cloves, dried plums, almonds, tobacco leaves, a touch of vanilla and liquorice, traditional to Odfjell's terroir, add complexity. Full bodied, juicy, with firm, ripe, velvety tannins and a long finish.
My Notes:

About Odfjell:

Our unique gravity flow winery, designed by Laurence Odfjell, the son of the founder, allows for extremely gentle handling of the grapes and the fine wines. The winery is situated on a slope above the vineyards. Carved into the slope, over 60% of the winery is under ground.

This subterranean environment achieves naturally low and stable temperatures for storage. The design incorporates a number of passive cooling strategies such as, optimizing solar orientation and using 30cm thick concrete walls as thermal mass.

Gravitational wineries ensure that during the winemaking pumping is reduced to an absolute minimum, thus avoiding unnecessary agitation of the wine. This gentle handling allows us to preserve all the subtle fruit characteristics from our vineyards to the final bottle.

Big House White is a crisp yet round wine with a floral nose, accentuated by honeysuckle, litchi, and a bit of a tropical fruit cocktail.  A virtual potpourri of fruits including cantaloupe, peach, apricot, and lychee.  The finish is fairly long with a nice apricot character.

About Big House:

The Big House wines were born of the notion that the California climate is quite hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy and Spain. Big House has found that by blending, rather than relying upon a single variety, they can create far more complex, rich wines that elegantly match a very wide variety of cuisine, from pizza, to BBQ ribs to roast chicken.

A blend of 56% Malvasia Bianca, 22% Muscat Canelli, 18% Viognierand 4% Rousanne.

Big House wines are a rebellious mix of nontraditional grape varieties destined to give the imbiber a new experience. This year's tipple is reminiscent of the Franco-Italian battle for the '06 FIFA World Cup. The flamboyant Italians represented by Malvasia and Muscat Canelli and the much more austere and serious French led by Viognier and Rousanne.
