Winemaker's Notes:

A deep, opaque cherry color, with strong purple hues. The nose has a very high fruit intensity of blackberries, raspberries, blackberries and black licorice, which are combined with roasted and spicy flavors typical of aging in French oak. On the palate, it is very fleshy and dense, very broad. It has balanced acidity, soft tannins and long, fruity and spicy finish. A treat to the palate and the senses... In short, a sip of Ribera del Duero.

Winemaker's Notes:

Intense Tempranillo character is apparent in an elegant and pure wine only lightly influenced by the oak. Intensively fruity on the palate with a lingering, slightly dusty finish that promises excellent development in the bottle. Aged 15 months in primarily American oak.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Condado de Haza:

About Condado de Haza:

In 1972, Alejandro Fernández and his wife Esperanza Rivera of Pesquera de Duero initiated the renaissance of Spain's Ribera del Duero appellation with the area's first modern wire-trained vineyard, their Viña Alta in Pesquera. In the mid-1980s as Tinto Pesquera was assuming its place among the most intriguing and powerful icons in the world of wine, Alejandro spied a neglected slope along the Duero River which had the appearance of being the most ideal vineyard site in the region, perhaps in all Spain: One full kilometer of southfacing mountain slope leading right to the river's edge. Ideal soils in the full range preferred by the Tempranillo variety, from gravel to clay with a chalky base, suggested the potential for a multitude of styles from this difficult grape, essential for creating the desired complexity and balance.

Abandoned for years, the slope consisted of hundreds of small parcels with separate and stubborn ownership. Three years of continuous negotiation beginning in late 1986 resulted in the first planting of just over 100 acres in 1989. Today the contiguous estate includes over 500 acres of prime Tempranillo vines. Encompassed within the historic county of the hilltop village Haza high above the opposite bank of the Duero, the estate was christened Condado de Haza.

Condado de Haza reflects the bold and brilliant winemaking style of Alejandro Fernández, unrivaled master of Spain's Tempranillo variety. Bottled after malolactic fermentation and 15 months in American oak, like Tinto Pesquera it can be enjoyed early yet will reward patient cellaring.

Winemaker's Notes:

Ruby red in color with an amaranthine halo, renowned winemaker Alvaro Palacios describes this wine as containing complex aromas of syrup-covered cherries, fresh nectarines, quince paste and delicate notes of wood, white pepper and flint. On the palate the wine is unctuous and voluminous with soft tannins that are presented over a foundation of mixed berries, hints of white pepper, blood oranges and dark chocolate. Meant to enjoy now or age up to 10 years, this wine is very versatile and pairs well with almost any type of cuisine.

Palacios Remondois committed to organic viticulture and natural winemaking practices, resulting in wines that express the true character of the estate's La MontesaVineyard.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Palacios Remondo:

About Palacios Remondo:

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is based in Alfaro in the Rioja Baja. This old family firm has been revitalized by the arrival of Alvaro Palacios who has already made his name, starting from scratch, with his extraordinary Priorato wines. He is now intent on bringing the family Rioja company into the front line. The wines are made from their own vineyards, a rarity in the Rioja region.

Palacios is deeply committed to organic viticulture and natural winemaking practices, such as use of organic fertilizers in the stone-covered, clay soils. All wines are unfiltered and clarified only with egg whites, no exogenous yeasts or commercial compounds are added to the wines and sulfites are kept to minimum levels. Total respect for his vineyard and its surrounding environment results in wines – La Montesa, Propiedad, Plácet Valtomelloso and La Vendimia – that express the true nature of the estate’s soils.

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2004 Pintia comes from a superior vintage. Similarly styled to its older sibling, it is simply more flamboyant and opulent. The temptation is to drink this heady effort now but those who can delay gratification for a few years will be amply rewarded."
-Wine Advocate

"Saturated ruby. Intensely perfumed, expansive aromas of dark berries, kirsch, oak spices and mocha, with a suave mineral undercurrent. Rich, focused dark berry and cherry flavors are framed by strong but harmonious tannins and complicated by notes of dark chocolate, candied violet and vanilla bean. Lush and sweet on the impressively sappy, long finish. Although I'm confident that this will age well, it's mighty delicious now."
-International Wine Cellar

My Notes:

Additional wines from Bodegas Vega Sicilia:

About Bodegas Vega Sicilia:

The foundations of Vega Sicilia's traditions may be found as far back as 1859, when Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves was gifted an estate by his wealthy father. The origins of the Vega Sicilia winery are officially regarded as 1864, which was when Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves returned from his travels in Bordeaux with vine cuttings, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Carmenere - all of which were found in Bordeaux at that time - and, curiously, some Pinot Noir. Regardless of how Pinot Noir arrived, the cuttings were duly propagated and planted at Vega Sicilia, although the Carmenere and Pinot Noir are no longer found in the Vega Sicilia vineyards.

Vega Sicilia's Tempranillo is trained in gobelet fashion, whereas the French varieties are trained in a Guyot system. Green harvesting is employed ruthlessly in order to control yields, and the harvest itself is meticulous. In the winery, such a massive wine will withstand many years in wood and Unico sees a complicated series of rackings from huge barrels to new oak, to used American oak, back to new oak again, and on it goes. Whatever these phases are called, Unico certainly receives very prolonged barrel ageing, with the 1970 seeing over sixteen years! And yet these are not washed out, stretched, overly oaky wines when mature, testimony to the quality of the raw materials on which they are based.

"The 2005 Venta Mazzarron is one of the finest values in Spanish wine. Made from 100% Tinta de Toro, it offers up a smoky, complex bouquet with notes of mineral and blackberry. Ripe, sweet, forward, and altogether pleasurable, it can be enjoyed over the next 6-8 years."

My Notes:

About Vinas del Cenit:

Tierra del Vino de Zamora is a historic region that goes back much further than other regions which posses DO status. No other wine-producing region in Spain has a similar title, and in fact some of the 56 towns that are located within the area include 'del vino' in their title: Morales del Vino, Corrales del Vino, El Cubo del vino...

The Tierra del Vino is dissected by the famous Vía de la Plata, which dates back to the Roman Empire. It originally ran through the cities of Mérida and Astorga, serving as a route used by Roman troops and merchants. The region's climate is unique within the northern plateau, its temperature being the highest on average in Castilla y León.

Viñas del Cénit's vineyards are organised in small parcels of land planted with a substantial amount of old Tempranillo vines, some of which are over a hundred years old and ungrafted. The soil is calcareous, gravel and sand-based, with a layer of red clay underneath.

The young oenologist Almudena Alberca from Salamanca has had ties to Viñas del Cénit since its inception in 2003. She is in charge of supervising the vineyards and also of the vinification processes.

Medium-high cherry red robe, with orange tinted tones on the edge of the glass, clear and brilliant. Intense and complex to the nose. Wild berry aromas predominate, blended with hints of coconut, cinnamon, tobacco and leather. Full-bodied and well structured to the palate, with silky and enveloping tannins. Long after-taste acquired from its lengthy time in bottle, where its elegant bouquet gains in intensity. This Viña Ardanza continues to evolve without losing its traditional qualities.
