About Henriot:

In spite of the destruction of most of the archives during the war, the installation of the family Henriot with Champagne is situated towards 1550. In this time, the Henriot family was in the head of different activities of trade (wine, wool …). It is the XVIII ème century when the family specializes in The wine activity. Later, in 1905 , François Joseph, King and Emperor of the empire Austro-Hongrois, granted the supreme privilege to Alexandre Henriot To supply the Court of Hasbourg. Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 appears to show great promise in the grape growing world. It started as an average year with moderate rainfall and mild temperatures throughout the winter months. In March, we saw the onset of spring shoot up suddenly leading to temperatures well into the 80's for over a week. This rapid heat spike caused vines to suddenly awake from their winter dormancy and grow rapidly. Temperatures soon fell back to normal pace with more regular summer weather.

The fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested during the cool hours of early morning to maximize fresh flavors. Crush occurred in our cellar prior to fermentation and maceration on the skins, after which the wines were drained and pressed to barrels for maturation. Nineteen months later, the wines went through final evaluation to complete the blend.

This is a very elegant and balanced wine with nicely focused black cherry and currant flavors on the palate. Hints of cinnamon, decar, vanilla and mocha give the wine additional complexity and grace. While approachable now, this wine will age nicely over the next 10 to 15 years.

Winemaker's Notes:

Fresh, fragrant and seductively complex, the wine opens with vivid aromas of juicy berries mingled with the scent of violets and earthy black truffle. Sun-ripened black-fruit flavors of blackberry and plum are interwoven with subtle oak and a touch of chocolate on the long finish. Harmonious and generous, the wine has excellent density supported by big, velvety tannins.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 1999 vintage of this wine was ranked #1 on the Wine Spectator's Top 10 Wines of 2002

Deep dark red. A spicy nose with mature red fruits. Round tannins with powerful complexity. A rich unctuous wine with notes of mature plums, hazelnuts and red fruits. A very rich wine full of harmony and balance.

My Notes:

Additional wines from E. Guigal:

About E. Guigal:

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. In these vineyards that are over 2400 years old, you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine for over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment.

Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 when the latter was victim to a brutal illness rendering him blind. Marcel's hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis Grippat estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage, as well as the Domaine de Vallouit in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.

In the cellars of the Guigal estate in Ampuis, the northern appellations of the Rhône Valley are produced and aged. These are the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The great appellations of the Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Côtes-du-Rhône, are also aged in the Ampuis cellars.

Winemaker's Notes:

HARVEST NOTES: The 2003 vintage was fairly wet with more than 11 inches of rain during the growing season. Overall, spring and summer were mild and even though we had an early bud break we ended up picking our grapes fairly late. Long hang time is beneficial to the grapes to allow for ripeness (sugar maturity) as well as phenolic maturity (aromas, tannins and anthocyanins). The crop quantity was above average and the fruit was well-balanced in acidity.

L'Ermitage Rosé brings complexity and smoothness to a higher level. The delicate salmon colors enhance the tiny bubbles and creamy mouthfeel. Notes of bread crust, baked apples and caramelized hazelnut create an elegant and complex wine. The wine is crisp with great acid on notes of quince jelly and anise.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Roederer Estate:

About Roederer Estate:

The crisp, fresh and rich flavors of Roederer Estate sparkling wines reflect the cool, fog-shrouded Anderson Valley that is home to their family-owned estate's 600 acres of vineyards. This protected valley in Northern California provides the ideal ripening conditions for their 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Founded in 1982, Roederer Estate adds oak-aged reserve wines to all their blends to create complex, dry and harmonious sparkling wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Catena Alta Malbec is a dark, opaque violet color and presents ripe berry fruit and wild flower aromas on the nose as well as cinnamon spice and a touch of citrus. The mouthfeel is full and rich offering a coating sensation, with exceptional weight and concentration but with a soft, supple texture. Mid-palate flavors of cassis and black currant along with hints of chocolate, vanilla and black pepper dance nicely into the lingering finish full of finely grained tannins, minerality and lively acidity.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Catena:

About Catena:

Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina's high altitude Malbec pioneers. The Catena family began making wine in Mendoza in 1902. Nicolas Catena, third generation family vintner, was one of the first to see the potential of Mendoza's mountain vineyards for producing high quality Malbec. In 1994, he became the first Argentine to exprot a world-class bottling of Malbec under the Catena label. Nicolas is joined by his daughter, Dr. Laura Catena, in their relentless pursuit of world-class quality from the family's high altitude vineyards. Laura has done extensive work in introducing Malbec and other varietal plant selections, soil and climate analysis, and sustainable practices throughout Mendoza. Head winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, has been at Catena Zapata since 2002 and works with Laura and Nicolas to make wines that express the family's vineyards and palate.

For both the Napa Valley and Special Selection bottlings, the goal is a balanced wine that tastes delicious when bottled but can improve with age. Chuck Wagner attributes the quality of the wines to farming and winemaking techniques developed over the decades.

About Caymus:

As the Wagner family celebrated the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards in 2012, they thought back to 1972 which Charlie Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son, Chuck, built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, California - the center of the Napa Valley. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" (1984 and 1990 vintage).

Winemaker's Notes:

The mostly old vines that make up our Teldeschi are Zinfandel, Carignane, and Petite Sirah, a mélange typical of older vineyard plantings in California. The three varieties are fermented separately and blended to taste. Native yeast fermentation, small open-top fermenters, manual punching down of the cap, minimal processing, and aging in small French oak cooperage all contribute to a style that brings out the best of the vineyard—power and big flavors. Teldeschi Vineyard is always the highest quality of the Zinfandel vineyards that Ravenswood crushes from the Dry Creek Valley.

The 2007 Teldeschi Zinfandel is richly perfumed with scents of black raspberry, apricot, and aromatic spices. Subtle tobacco flavors mingle with flavors of plum and cherry. Red and dark berries dominate the flavor, where they are joined by the typical Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel characters of vanilla, cherry, and sweet plum-like fruit.

My Notes:

About Ravenswood:

Fueled initially by the inspiration and winemaking skills of Joel Peterson, aided and abetted by his business partner W. Reed Foster, Ravenswood winery has been dedicated to top quality, hand-crafted wine since the first crush in 1976. Every Ravenswood wine carries a unique vintage and vineyard identity in addition to the intense powerful – gothic – character with which the winery has come to be associated.

A key to Ravenswood’s success is our long-standing relationships with over 60 independent grape growers. Vineyards are chosen for their location, age, yield and special flavor characteristics. At Ravenswood, we are devoted to working with growers who share our philosophy about high quality.

Ravenswood Vineyard Designate wines are made employing what winemaker Joel Peterson refers to as “stubborn and impractical” Old World enological practices. Wines are fermented in small wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and punched down by hand three to five times per day. The wines are characterized by intense, spicy aromas supported by rich, berry flavors and long, clean finishes.

Gavi is a clear straw yellow, with green reflections. The bouquet is intense and ethereal, reminiscent of ripe fruit, green apples and moss. The palate is full and flavorful yet soft, with a daring hint of green fruit. It is a harmoniously balanced wine.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Pio Cesare:

About Pio Cesare:

Pio Cesare has been producing wine for more than 100 years and through generations. The tradition began in 1881, when Pio Cesare started gathering grapes in his vineyards and purchasing those of some selected and reliable farmers in the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco districts.

At Pio Cesare, there has always been a conviction that great wine can come only from the finest grapes and the winery's output has always been limited through adherence to the highest standards. Pio Cesare limits its production by using only the most mature and healthy grapes. The ripening of the grapes is carefully monitored and the harvest is rigidly controlled with each grape selected by hand.

Today, the estate is managed by Pio Boffa, great-grandson of Pio Cesare. Under his stewardship, the wines of Pio Cesare have become famous throughout the world. Great strides have been made in quality, and single vineyard offerings have dazzled the wine press.

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is big and lush with huge gobs of fruit in the aroma and flavor. The texture of the wine is soft and supple, typical of Cabernet Sauvignons grown in our area of the Oakville AVA. Patience during bottle aging will reward the "steward" with an outstanding bottle over the next 10 to 15 years.

Try this Cabernet with a lamb loin marinated in olive oil and garden herbs with lemon mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and Swiss chard.
