About Bodegas y Vinedos Ilurce:

Bodegas y Viñedos Ilurce is a family company founded by Grandfather Amador Escudero in 1940, after the Spanish Civil War. The most characteristic thing about this company is the hard work of its owners: Amador Escudero: Agriculturist engineer and farmer. He takes care of the vineyard, where he spends most of his time, although during the harvest he works mostly in the cellar (he does the punch down, pump power, racking and pressing).

Inmaculada Escudero has a degree in Economics and is export manager of the company. She uses to work mainly in the office, taking care of the economic aspects of the business. Ana Escudero, with a degree in Chemistry, used to work as a proffessor at the University of Zaragoza, but in this company she is the main winemaker.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard 2010 has a bright ruby red colour and an expressive nose that showcases fresh red fruit and a hint of mint, all nicely complemented by notes of dried fruit and a subtle touch of sweet spices. Light balsamic touches enhance the complexity even more. Velvety on the palate, this wine starts out friendly but firm, with fine tannins and flavours that reiterate the wine's aromatic profile of dominant fresh red and black fruit accompanied by hazelnuts and sweet spices. The wine's excellent acidity foretells its great cellaring potential.

Additional wines from Errazuriz:

About Errazuriz:

Don Maximiano Errazuriz founded Viña Errazuriz in 1870 in the Aconcagua Valley, north of Santiago. This valley has cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes--ideal for growing grapes. Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano's descendant, Eduardo Chadwick--the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Eduardo has overseen the modernization of the winemaking technology at this historic estate while maintaining a distinct identity for its wines, dedicated to producing estate grown wines of superior quality.

Winemaker's Notes:

The intensely floral bouquet offers aromas of strawberry, raspberry, rose, magnolia and Asian spices; similar to a rustic Pinot Noir, but the body an weight is very much old vine Grenache. Eighty year old vines offer fresh and energetic fruit in the mouth, with sweet red berry flavors unfettered by tannins. The spiciness is mirrored on the finish, which is long and very pure.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep ruby colored with a gorgeous nose. Attractive aromas of kirsch, raspberries, pepper and melted liquorice. Full flavored wine with a supple texture and no hard edges. Medium to full bodied, fruit driven sumptuously-textured and long aftertaste.

Pair with various roast dishes, Spanish stew, mushrooms and grilled meats. Also, blue fish, rice, short- and medium-cured cheeses.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

About Las Rocas de San Alejandro:

Las Rocas de San Alejandro is located in the region of Calatayud, about 150 miles northeast of Madrid, and is centered around the rivers of Jiloca and Jalon. Although there are still few wineries in the zone, the ones which are beginning to show with their wines why this region is so special.

Although the D.O. is quite young, vines have been grown in the zone for some time. About one eighth of the vineyard land’s production has been bottled at one of Spain’s best and most progressive cooperatives, San Alejandro. With an abundance of amazing raw material, Eric Solomon was able to commission several bottlings of very old vine fruit into what has become one of the most sought-after estates in the portfolio. Calatayud benefits from a continental climate with vast temperature differences between night and day. Harvests are much later than in other parts of Aragon, and the acidity/maturity/alcohol ratios tend to be more balanced.

As most of the vineyards lie on what was (thousands of years ago) an old river basin, the soil is comprised of brown limestone and loam over slate and gypsum. This particular soil is also ideal for production of olives, cherries, and other fruits. Jean-Marc Lafage (of Domaine Lafage in France’s Roussillon) is responsible for the Las Rocas cuvees.

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for this wine were harvested from old-vine Garnacha vineyards that cling to rugged terrain on the slopes of the famous Moncayo Mountain with low yields of less than 2 t/acre.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Borsao:

About Borsao:

Founded in 1958 in the town of Borja, called Borsao in the 4th century B.C., this winery represents what can be done with Garnacha, a grape that is not well appreciated by the Spanish press. Through meticulous selection, work in the fields and at reception time in the winery, modern winemaking produces this highly fruity wine. One of the best examples of the region known as "The Garnacha land of Spain", the lower part of the Ebro River.
