Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 Traditions Cabernet Sauvignon features grapes from Milbrandt's estate vineyards in the Wahluke Slope AVA of Eastern Washington. Established in 2006, the Wahluke Slope is a sub-region within the Columbia Valley appellation. Located midway between Seattle and Spokane it is bordered by the Columbia River to the southwest and Hanford Reach National Monument to the east. The climate here is warm enough during the day to fully ripen grapes, yet cool enough at night to ensure bright acids and firm tannins.

2008 Traditions epitomizes Eastern Washington Cabernet. It is dark, harmonious and complex with black cherry, plum, cassis, vanilla, spicy oak, chocolate, dried herbs and a whiff of mint. While it is soft on the palate there are enough fine-grained tannins to lend an approachable, velvety structure. Open a bottle with roasted meats, stews, lamb kebabs, cassoulet, hamburgers, barbecue, ribs, sloppy joes, tacos or pizza.

About Milbrandt:

Butch and Jerry Milbrandt planted their first vineyard in 1997. In the ensuing decade, Milbrandt Vineyards earned a reputation for growing some of Washington State's finest grapes. In 2006, under the talented direction of winemaker Gordon Hill, they began crafting signature wines using selected grapes from their reputable vineyards. Milbrandt's first wines were released in June 2007. The tradition for excellence established in their vineyards is inherent in every bottle of Milbrandt Vineyards wine.

Winemaker's Notes:

"If a blast of thick but classy oak doesn't bother you, then this single-vineyard wine comes highly recommended. It gets better with every minute of air, and along the way you get aromas of charcoal, mint, licorice and berries, which are followed by flavors of blackberry, prune cake and molasses. This modern, ripe, eminently drinkable Syrah weighs in at 14.5% alcohol."

Winemaker's Notes:

Fasten your seat belts. This wine is going to take your senses for a ride. Big, bold aromas of rich black fruit and mocha mingle with hints of spice and soft vanilla. A core of intense, dard plum and cocoa rock the palate of this daring Zinfandel, while balanced acidity and lingering tannins add complexity, concentration and depth to the finish.

Additional wines from Brazin:

About Brazin:

Brazin is where old and new worlds collide. Lodi, one of the oldest California wine growing regions, is now home to some of the newest wine making technology. The result is a Zinfandel that is so bold, so intense, that it is dangerously good.

This blend is dark red, with crimson highlights and an intense, mature red fruit nose, with hints of violets and "esteva" (a local Portuguese herb). The palate shows great structure and a full-bodied elegance, with mature, round tannins, leading to a long, persistent finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Quinta do Vallado:

About Quinta do Vallado:

In the heart of Portugal’s most famous wine region – the Douro Valley – near the historical center of Regua, the Quinta do Vallado vineyards, winery and guest house spread across both banks of the Corgo River at the very point where it meets the Douro. With winemaking references that date back to 1716, the Quinta belonged to the legendary Portuguese vintner D. Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, and has remained in the family through modern times.

The current owners, Joao Ferreria Alvares Ribeiro, Francisco Ferreira and Francisco Olazabal, are the sixth generation of this remarkable family, and the family’s mission to produce some of the best still wines of this fertile valley continues with the red blends and varietals that are exported worldwide. Of the 38-hectare Estate, 26 hectares are filled with vines 60 years and older. It is from these vines that Quinta do Vallado’s Red Reserve and Touriga Nacional wines are made, so it is no wonder that the wines are often found to be rated and reviewed among the best wines from the Douro.

The wine shows a deep, luminous ruby. On the nose, sweet, toasty notes of oak enhance the fruit, with marked nuances of ripe cherry refined by elegant scents of violets. On entry, the wine immediately demonstrates its superb, full-structured character, with a harmonious, judicious balance between tannins and alcohol. An intensely savoury finish.

Additional wines from Valley of the Moon Winery:

About Valley of the Moon Winery:

Valley of the Moon Winery encompasses both the rich history and the innovative spirit of California wine.

Situated in the Sonoma Valley on land first planted to grapes in 1863, Valley of the Moon Winery is housed in a beautifully restored stone and redwood winery built in 1887. Blessed with rich volcanic soils and a distinctive “banana belt” microclimate, the estate vineyard has been a revered source of grapes for well over a century. A block of “old vine” Zinfandel planted in the 1940s is complemented by more recent plantings of Barbera, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah; all farmed sustainably with natural soil amendments and natural pest controls.

Yet Valley of the Moon Winery is a thoroughly modern - even cutting-edge - producer. The state-of-the-art production facility features a full complement of temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters, and small French and American oak barrels; ideal for Valley of the Moon’s artisan winemaking. In addition to making superb Sonoma County Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, Valley of the Moon Winery is a leader among California wineries in the production of several exciting up-and-coming wines: Syrah, Sangiovese, Pinot Blanc, Rosato di Sangiovese and Cuvée de la Luna, a proprietary Bordeaux-inspired blend. Sometimes hard to find, Valley of the Moon wines are definitely worth the search.

The 2007 Ancient Vines Zinfandel shows wonderful dusty raspberry, blackberry, white pepper and spice, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Aging in new and used wood has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes.

Additional wines from Cline:

About Cline:

Fred Cline founded Cline Cellars in 1982, in Oakley, California. In 1991, the winery facilities relocated to the Sonoma Valley on a 350 acre estate in the Carneros District. The Cline Brothers, Fred and Matt, are Zinfandel and Rhone varietal specialists. Their holdings include some of the oldest and rarest vines in California. Winemaker's Notes:

Perched on the top of a steep hillside in the East Barossa Ranges, the Steingarten (garden of stones) vineyard looks back down on Rowland Flat. Established in 1962, the vineyard has survived despite the harsh conditions and lack of any irrigation to support the vines during often long, hot summers.

This small Steingarten vineyard, which was gouged out of an exposed, rocky hillside with it's vines close-planted in classic Mosel fashion, is noted for it's seasonal variation and the outstanding varietal character of its Riesling grapes.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Jacob's Creek:

About Jacob's Creek:

With over 150 years of making wine in the Barossa Valley, Jacob's Creek's winemaking philosophy is to make high quality wines in a contemporary Australian style, which are fresh, elegant, great tasting and show true varietal character. From its beginnings in 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant named Johann Gramp planted the Barossa Valley's first commercial vineyard on the banks of Jacob's Creek. His first vineyard was in a small ironstone winery and visitors can still walk the historic vineyard, inspect the original cellar and feel a true sense of place for Jacob's Creek. Today, Jacob's Creek is one of the leading forces of Australian wine, creating wines with true character with a variety of different offerings from its portfolio.

Winemaker's Notes:

Owned and farmed by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel fame, this Vinsobres Les Hauts de Julien comes from a single plot of very old vines - 90 years - which, quite unusually, was co-planted with Syrah and Grenache. The Hauts de Julien is 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache.

Deep purple in color. Red licorice and blueberry - thick, multilayered fruit. Lots of meaty tannins and a very, very long juicy blueberry finish.

Quite a good match with Mediterranean dishes, especially those with black olives.

Crisp lemon aromas combine with gentle oak notes to provide an alluring complexity. It is medium-bodied and has vibrant acidity with hints of lemon and green apple that lead to a dry, crisp finish. There is just the lightest kiss of oak flavor that frames the fresh fruit flavors. It is a bright, crisp and captivating young wine to enjoy by itself or paired with chicken, pork and seafood.
