Additional wines from Placido:

About Placido:

Placido wines owe their phenomenal popularity to choice grapes grown in some of the world's premier wine regions, renowned winemaking expertise and a quality-price ratio difficult to match. The brand inherited its name from a famous Sienese family, the Placidi, on whose vast Tuscan estate some of the Placido vines grow today. Now a worldwide brand, Placido has also brought centuries of European winemaking experience to Chile's grape growing region.

Consisting of eight noble wine types, their wines include: Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Chianti and a fruity Pinot Grigio all from grapes grown in choice Tuscany vineyards. Chile's Maipo Valley offers an ideal micro-climate for cultivating the noblest of French stock, such as Placido's Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Kendall-Jackson:

About Kendall-Jackson:

Back in 1974, Jess Jackson saw in the fine vineyards of California's cool coastal regions fruit with a variety of outstanding flavors. What if there was a way to produce from this abundance, a single outstanding "cuvée" that offered both quality and value? The result, first released in 1983, was Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay, a rich, round and flavorful wine, made with hand-crafted methods. That same year, Grand Reserve was introduced, a line of ultra-premium wines that represented the full potential of California's finest vineyards and winemaking. Today, over 5,000 acres of vineyard in California's coastal regions are farmed by Kendall-Jackson. Four separate wineries house what is possibly the single largest barrel-fermentation project in the world. But perhaps most important, is that Kendall-Jackson remains a family-owned winery.

Light lemon gold in color; aromas of ripe pear and creamy vanilla. On the palate, flavors of apple and pear with rich, creamy vanilla and a soft butter touch on the medium long finish.

Our 2009 Columbia Valley Chardonnay is the perfect accompaniment to linguini with shrimp and parmesan cheese, or a cheese platter with rich Cheddar, Gruyere, Fontina and Brie with dried fruit.

My Notes:

About Columbia Winery:

Columbia Winery was the first premium winery in Washington and the first in the state to produce vineyard-designate wines. Columbia Winery was founded in 1962 by ten friends, six of whom were University of Washington professors. Originally known as Associated Vintners, the group was united in the belief that vines could survive the harsh Washington winters and that fine wine could be made in Washington state.

Having worked alongside founding winemaker and Master of Wine, David Lake, Kerry Norton now oversees the Columbia Winery winemaking, handcrafting Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah sourced from the Columbia and Yakima Valleys.

Additional wines from Columbia Crest:

About Columbia Crest:

Founded in 1983, Columbia Crest has grown from a small winery in a relatively unknown wine region to one of the most significant wineries in the U.S. and a major force behind Washington state's emergence as a world-class wine region. Over the years, the winery has remained committed to delivery handcrafted, small-lot wines, as well as affordable, superior quality everyday wines. In 2009, the winery reached a milestone when Wine Spectator named their 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Year," the first time a wine from Washington state has received the ranking. This accolade was not only a historic moment for Columbia Crest, but for all wineries in Washington and reinforced the belief that the region is among the best wine-producing areas in the world.

Winemaker's Notes:

2011 Red Blend has dark berry fruit flavors, integrated with brown spice and vanilla oak characters that form a plush mouthfeel. The Tempranillo and Syrah grapes contribute bold, spicy flavors of blackberry and black pepper which marry well with the juicy dark cherry flavors of Bonarda and the deep plum flavors of the Malbec base. The addition of Cabernet Franc helps to balance the blend, as it melds with notes of warm brown spice to create a long, supple finish.

Blend: 53% Malbec, 15% Bonarda, 14% Tempranillo, 13% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc

My Notes:

Additional wines from Alamos:

About Alamos:

From the vineyard to the winery, the Alamos wines are made to emphasize varietal fruit character. The cool evening temperatures in Catena's high altitude vineyards allow for prolonged hang time, preserving the fruit's full spectrum of aromas and flavors.

At the winery, the grapes are gently destemmed, fermentation temperatures are carefully controlled and two to four year old barrels are used to age the wines.

This wine is deep cherry red in color. The nose is rich and spicy with ripe fruit. On the palate, there is red fruit, such as blackcurrant and blackberry, with spice and a fresh finish.

This is a wine for burgers, pizza or to drink on its own.

My Notes:

Additional wines from La Vieille Ferme:

About La Vieille Ferme:

Jean Pierre Perrin established La Vieille Ferme over 35 years ago, when he chose to produce an inexpensive, straightforward Rhône wine to sell by direct mail to French wine lovers. He used the same grape varieties in similar proportions to those planted at the family's Château de Beaucastel, in a similar vinification process. The result was an immediate success in France, a wine of character and style in keeping with its Beaucastel heritage.

Initially, Jean Pierre made only Côtes du Rhône, but steeply rising grape prices in 1976 caused him to switch to Côtes du Ventoux and eventually to produce a white wine from the mountainous Côtes du Luberon. La Vieille Ferme was introduced to the United States in 1970. The response was an immediate, overwhelming acceptance and an outpouring of critical acclaim from eminently knowledgeable critics who recognized La Vieille Ferme for its consistently fine quality and value.

2000 Wine Enthusiast rating: 90 points

Winemaker's Notes:

This vintage, the Landslide Vineyard produced a wine that is intensely seductive with an alluring balance of dark fruit to bright fruit. Opaque deep red with a vibrant ruby edge, this wine begins the seduction with sweet black cherry, cassis, plum, and blackberry fruit aromas along with dark roasted coffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and smoky mineral notes. Subtle wafts of violets, hints of mint and celery seed complete the aromatics. On the palate, dark berries, cassis, blackberries, and plums are enriched with roasted coffee accents. The entry is big, full and rich, followed by a focused middle and a youthful finish with a slight grip and dark roasted offering.

This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with grilled radicchio and Gorgonzola wood fired pizza, cauliflower and winter squash with Bagna Cauda dressing, and cedar-smoked pork spareribs.

Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, 1% Tannat

My Notes:

Additional wines from Simi:

About Simi:

In 1876, brothers Giuseppe and Pietro Simi began making wine in San Francisco from Sonoma County grapes and eventually planted vineyards near Healdsburg. Simi's historic stone cellars were built in 1890 and are still used to age the wines. Today, Simi is recognized as a leader in innovation and experimentation with a history of over 125 years of cutting-edge winemaking.

Their Alexander Valley vineyards possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region. Years of geologic activity – from an ancient mudflow to the meandering Russian River and Mayacama Creek – has created numerous distinct soil types and a range of microclimates. Here they grow the red Bordeaux varietals for their Reserve Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for their Sendal.

Their Russian River Goldfields vineyard is planted to field selections chosen from the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California. The combination of diverse clones and the cool, Russian River Valley climate produce Simi’s distinct Reserve Chardonnay.

Simi's winemakers focus on site-specific winemaking and use the most modern advances in vineyard management, fermentation and blending to best express the personality and flavors of each vineyard site.

Winemaker's Notes:

Made from 100% Pinot Grigio, this is an excellent expression not only of the variety, but of the Grave del Friuli terroir. Vibrant on the palate, the crisp acidity acts as a counterpoint to the peach, almond, and light floral notes in the wine.

Outstanding as an aperitif, or when paired with summer salads, snapper, sole, sushi, grilled chicken, and risotto based dishes, this is an excellent example of what Friulian Pinot Grigio is capable of.
