The 2010 vintage of this Chardonnay was crafted from a blend of grapes from premium vineyards in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Carefully tended vines yield fruit of exemplary quality: a pure expression of the valley's terroir. Winemaker's Notes:

The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Penley Estate:

About Penley Estate:

Established in 1988, by Kym Tolley, a direct descendant of the famous Penfold and Tolley winemaking families – the name Penley is an amalgam of the first three and last three letters from each title.

Tolley has over 25 years of winemaking experience, including being involved in the making of many vintages of the famous Penfolds Grange. The estate is located in the heart of Coonawarra, with the vines planted in the famed "terra rossa" soils – bright red top-soils overlaying soft free-draining limestone.

Critically acclaimed as one of Coonawarra's leading estates, and voted as one of the International Wineries of the Year 2001 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, while the Reserve Cabernet voted best wine of Coonawarra 2001, as judged by winemaking peers and critics.

The Penley Estate signature style comprises distinct, precise, terrior driven wines – not overly oaked or excessively alcoholic. They display ripe clean fruit with true regional character – the senior wines will age for many years.

Winemaker's Notes:

On the nose, the 2010 Shiraz shows earthy gravel, spicy licorice and dense dark mulberries, while the sweet upfront berry fruit presented on tasting gives way to complex cedar, earth and spice notes, wrapping up with ample structure and grip. The vibrant, juicy fruit runs the length of the palate and lingers with a "have another glass" finish.

This Pinot Noir is dark ruby in color that glistens at the top of every pour. Aromas of ripe summer fruit touched with the pleasantly subtle notes of dried mint lift out of the glass. The mouthwatering flavors of strawberries and Bing cherries greet the front of your palate and extend to the more herbal tastes of black tea intermingled with spearmint towards the back of the palate. This wine is medium bodied with good acidity and a refreshingly smooth finish. Pairs well with lighter dishes, including semi-soft cheese with walnuts and figs or apple-mustard glazed pork chops.

Presenting a deep purple color with glistening cherry hues. It has alluringly fruity and powerful aromas reminiscent of lush raspberries and ripe, black cherries, delicately balanced by a subtle minerality and notes of cinnamon. In the palate it is a beautifully full-bodied and fresh wine that reveals a silky structure leading to a textured and long lasting finish.

Ideal with most Mediterranean dishes, especially with pasta, risottos, cheese. It is also an excellent accompaniment to poultry and game birds.

My Notes:

About Marques de Grinon:

Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova, Marquis of Griñon, has pioneered the modernization of vine growing and winemaking in Spain. He is a grandee of Spain and Vice President of the Spanish Gastronomical Academy and President of the Castilla La Mancha chapter. In 1974, he introduced Spain to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties. This was but the first step in a series of daring pioneering innovations by the man responsible for the great wines of Marques de Grinon. Years ago Carlos Falcó Fernandez planted a high canopy management vineyard with drip irrigation, advised by Richard Smart. With direction from Emile Peynaud and Michel Rolland, a partial root drying system was devised for planting Syrah and Petit Verdot, and launching the collection of grapes at night which here-to-fore was unheard of in Spain. These innovations contribute to the production of the complex fruit driven wines of Marqués de Griñón.

Located in Malpica de Tajo, 50 kilometers from Toledo, the vineyards cover a surface area of 50 hectares in the historic Dominio of Valdepusa (family owned since 1292). Currently, 42 of these hectares are used to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Syrah varieties using a mixed system that allows for the use of the most advanced technology, canopy management. This was the first vineyard in Spain where the technique was implemented.

Additional wines from Poggiotondo:

About Poggiotondo:

In the north-western corner of the Chianti region, resting on the hills between the Montalbano and Arno valley, 123 acres of vines are joined by some 2,000 olive trees on the Poggiotondo estate. Founder and winemaker Alberto Antonini is a scholar of modern winemaking earning degrees from the University of Florence, Bordeaux University, and University of California Davis in addition to his winemaking stints around the globe. The Poggiotondo vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean influence and soils are riddled with remnants of sea life that afford minerality and complexity to these modern DOCG and IGT renditions.

The 2011 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc is a straw green color, with a fresh, intensely concentrated aromas of tropical fruits infused with ripe citrus notes, complemented by lifted hints of lemongrass and passionfruit. It has a fine texture and acidity, with a degree of minerality and a lasting, refreshingly crisp finish on the palate. This wine is a perfect match with white meats, pale cheeses and seafood (especially oysters and scallops).
My Notes:

Additional wines from Dog Point Vineyard:

About Dog Point Vineyard:

The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. "These were days of few fences, of boundary riders and boundary keeping dogs".

Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks.

Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point.

Marlborough's Wairau Valley is the major grape growing region of New Zealand, a confined geographical area at the northern tip of the South Island. Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights characterise our long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavors.

Fruit for our wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. These older well-established vines situated on free draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines with a clay loam influence.

Winemaker's Notes:

Made from 100% Mencia, Gaba do Xil Mencia is grown in the vineyard called La Falcoeira, in the town of Santa Cruz. It's not just the wild energy, the mash-up of stemmy greenness with dark fruit ripeness. You can find that in a great Chambolle. It's more the contrast of floral and meaty scents, as if violets were pressed into chorizo. And the tannins, as black as carbon, integrating with the fruit into a dark-lashed beauty.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Telmo Rodriguez:

About Telmo Rodriguez:

Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, advocating native grape varietals tied to the climates and conditions of their sites, and making world-class wines from undiscovered as well as known regions. Perhaps most impressive, while Telmo Rodriguez makes rare and limited wines of astonishing character and quality, his everyday wines have been equally praised, and widely recognized for the tremendous value they offer.

Telmo studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux and was the winemaker at his family winery in Rioja, Remelluri, and then set off on his own in the early 1990s to discover new vineyards and regions all around Spain. He now makes a range of wines in diverse viticultural areas of Spain, with an emphasis on the following:

Telmo’s vineyards are biodynamically farmed
All vines are exclusively bush-trained, the traditional Spanish method
Sites with exceptional terroir
Varietals traditional to their regions
Replanting only with massal selections

Telmo was among the first to make significant wines in Toro, Rueda, Valdeorras, Malaga, Alicante and Cigales. In these areas he uses native varietals, often grapes rediscovered such as Godello, Verdejo, Moscatel and Monastrell which do not have wide recognition. With other classically recognized varietals such Tempranillo, Garnacha and Carignan, he works with vines that are indigenous and reflect the character of their particular site. As a result, Telmo has been one of the leaders of the quality revolution with these varietals in up and coming areas such as Toro, as well as in the traditional areas of Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

About Taltarni:

Established in 1969, Taltarni was one of the founding wineries in the iron-rich Pyrenees wine region in Victoria. John Goelet, a direct descendant of the Guestier wine merchant family of Bordeaux, discovered the Taltarni Vineyard through a worldwide search for a site comparable to the great vineyards of Bordeaux. From the outset, Taltarni has a strong French influence with the initial plantings of Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Soon after, Taltarni extended its plantings with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay. The Goelet family also sources Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Taltarni has built its reputation on elegant sparkling wines that are crafted using methode traditionale techniques, as wells as producing exceptional red and white wines. The distinctive labels, featuring a 17th century cartouche, represent the attention to detail and the French elegance and finesses that are hallmarks of all Taltarni wines.
