Winemaker's Notes:

Vivid, crisp and bright - the brand new Avant Chardonnay continues the nearly three decades of pioneering distinguished varietal wines from California's cool coastal appellations. Avant is very different from KJ's traditional rich, creamy styles of Chardonnay. Avant bursts with intriguing layers of fresh pineapple, bright green apple, crisp Meyer lemon, juicy pear and wildflowers. The wine's refreshing acidity and sleek mineral notes are balanced by a rounded mid-palate and slight oakiness with a long, pure fruit finish.

Additional wines from Kendall-Jackson:

About Kendall-Jackson:

Back in 1974, Jess Jackson saw in the fine vineyards of California's cool coastal regions fruit with a variety of outstanding flavors. What if there was a way to produce from this abundance, a single outstanding "cuvée" that offered both quality and value? The result, first released in 1983, was Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay, a rich, round and flavorful wine, made with hand-crafted methods. That same year, Grand Reserve was introduced, a line of ultra-premium wines that represented the full potential of California's finest vineyards and winemaking. Today, over 5,000 acres of vineyard in California's coastal regions are farmed by Kendall-Jackson. Four separate wineries house what is possibly the single largest barrel-fermentation project in the world. But perhaps most important, is that Kendall-Jackson remains a family-owned winery.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 Shiraz expresses oodles of spicy dark berry fruits, plums, cassis and earthy mint. On the palate, it's a succulent thunderbolt of pure Shiraz, right down to the last gulp. Made with structure and grip, the vibrant, juicy length lingers with a clean "have another glass" finish. Drink now or hide in the cellar for 3 years.

"The 2005 Shiraz is purple-colored with aromas of smoke and blueberry. Medium-bodied, with ample spicy fruit, it offers good concentration, depth, and balance. Drink it over the next 2-3 years."

Wine Spectator

88 Points

"Dark red. Youthful pepper-accented cassis and blackberry on the nose, with a suggestion of cracked pepper. Fleshy in texture, with jammy dark berry flavors, soft acidity and a hint of floral pastille. Very persistent sweet blackberry and kirsch on the finish. Vaguely liqueur-like but there's good acid lift and thrust here. Remains just this side of sweet." Stephen Tanzer's

Winemaker's Notes:

55% Garnacha, 40% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo

Named after the hillside vineyard located on the northeastern slope of the Yerga mountains in eastern Rioja, La Montesa is a blend of the red grape varieties on the Palacios Remondo estate. Renowned winemaker Alvaro Palacios describes this wine as having complex, profound and mysterious aromas that include notes of wild red berries, candied fruit, jasmine and sweet spice. On the palate the wine is unctuous and voluminous with soft tannins and a foundation of dark fruit shrouded by hints of shaved orange peel, white pepper and clove. Meant to enjoy now or age up to 10 years, this wine is very versatile and pairs well with almost any type of cuisine.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Palacios Remondo:

About Palacios Remondo:

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is based in Alfaro in the Rioja Baja. This old family firm has been revitalized by the arrival of Alvaro Palacios who has already made his name, starting from scratch, with his extraordinary Priorato wines. He is now intent on bringing the family Rioja company into the front line. The wines are made from their own vineyards, a rarity in the Rioja region.

Palacios is deeply committed to organic viticulture and natural winemaking practices, such as use of organic fertilizers in the stone-covered, clay soils. All wines are unfiltered and clarified only with egg whites, no exogenous yeasts or commercial compounds are added to the wines and sulfites are kept to minimum levels. Total respect for his vineyard and its surrounding environment results in wines – La Montesa, Propiedad, Plácet Valtomelloso and La Vendimia – that express the true nature of the estate’s soils.

Winemaker's Notes:

Fruity aroma with hints of apple and pineapple. Smooth, balanced palate with a fine acidic edge. Best served chilled.Excellent as an aperitif and acompaniment for rice dishes, seafood and fish.

Winemaker's comments: In 1954 my father, Miguel Torres, was travelling extensively, through winding mountain tracks in the quest to find the most highly-prized grapes in the region. His intention was to create a different wine, one that was the authentic expression of the character of this land. This led to the birth of "Sangre de Toro", whose name was inspired by Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, known in ancient times as "The son of the Bull". Today Sangre de Toro continues to be wholly produced at the family's winery, with the care and attention to detail that have given this great wine its fame.

Additional wines from Torres:

About Torres:

In 1870, when the Torres family founded its wine-making and exporting company, they understood the importance of both respecting traditions and maintaining the utmost quality of their products. Today, thanks to this hundred year old commitment, Bodegas Torres is a strong leader in the Spanish wine and brandy industry.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Tinguiririca River (Indian for "Loud River") flows from high in the Andes mountains across Chile to the Pacific Ocean. In the spring, when the snow-capped peaks begin to melt, the placid stream becomes a raging torrent.

Loud River Roaring Red is a full-bodied powerful blend of peppery Petit Verdot, spicy-fruity Carmenére and rich Cabernet Sauvignon. It shows expressive fruitiness in the nose, bursting with rich, ripe plums and blackberries sparked with spices. In the mouth, it is well balanced, showcasing the freshness of the fruit alongside forceful tannins for a tasty, round and long finish. With its deep, ruby red color and robust flavors, it's an excellent complement to juicy barbequed meats and spicy foods.

50% Petit Verdot, 40% Carmenere, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

My Notes:

Additional wines from La Playa:

About La Playa:

In 1952, patriarch Søren Axelsen left his native Copenhagen to travel the world. Eventually, he settled in California to grow his own grapes. But he never forgot the remarkable growing regions he had seen in Chile, in particular Colchagua Valley, which showed such great potential to produce world-class wines.

By 1989, he had realized his dream, founding Viña La Playa alongside his sons Peter and Eric. Viña La Playa of Chile is a partnership between the Axelsens and two promient Chilean winemaking legends: the Sutil and Errázuriz families. The winery encompasses 597 acres of prime property in the Colchagua Valley, where its vineyards enjoy a unique microclimate that fosters the growth of premium wine grapes.

With near-perfect growing conditions, Colchagua Valley has been described as "The Next Napa" (Wine Enthusiast, March 2002) as "arguably Chile's premier opportunity for world-class wine production" (Wine Spectator, April 30, 2002), and as "2005 Wine Region of the Year," yeilding "some of the most compelling wines in the world" (Wine Enthusiast, 2005).

Winemaker's Notes:

This Chardonnay screams of bright tropical fruit. Intense liveliness comes from the great acidity making each sip a vibrant pleasure. French Oak aging allows the wine to obtain a round and luscious mouth feel while not overpowering the brightness. Look for lemon, lime, apricot and pineapple flavors dancing all over your palate.

Additional wines from Spellbound:

About Spellbound:

Spellbound was born when Rob Mondavi and Paul Hoffman decided to craft wines that are relaxed enough to enjoy every day yet special enough to celebrate milestone events. In honor of California's rich winegrowing heritage, this winemaking team sources fruit from established and emerging wine regions throughout the state, including Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Santa Barbara and Lodi.

Currently Spellbound makes Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. All three wines are approachable and food-friendly, perfect for causal dinners and black tie functions alike. Because Spellbound wines pair so well with food, they've become a favorite choice of fine restaurants.

Each year, Oakley Five Reds is a unique red blend that is easy drinking and medium bodied with the spicy berry flavors that want in their Zinfandels. The Rhone varietals add pepper, cherry and dark fruit character. The wine has smooth tannins and luscious fruit and should age well into the future.

The 2006 is a blend of 74% Merlot, 7% Barbera, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Syrah, and 1% Mourvèdre. Flavors of blackberries, black pepper and a delicate green olive note which makes this wine an excellent accompaniment to spicy western grub or tomato-based dishes. Round up your posse and enjoy!

Winemaker's Notes:

Light straw in color, the nose of this Albariño is seductive with honey, pear and tropical fruit and a slight mineral component. It is racy and zesty with citrus and floral flavors in the mouth, yet is round and soft at the same time.

It matches perfectly with fresh seafood and shellfish; is an ideal accompaniment to salty, spicy Asian cuisine; and is also great on its own as a cocktail wine. Truly adventurous food lovers will amaze and inspire their friends by serving it with the unlikely, but fantastic pairing of traditional barbequed ribs with a sweet, slightly spicy tomato based sauce.

My Notes:

About Salneval:

Founded in 1988 (the same year the D.O. Rias Baixas was officially granted its charter), the winery is a cooperative of 362 grower/owners. It is equipped with the most advanced technological equipment available. This winery is considered among the highest quality-producers in the entire region.

The winery is located in the valley known as O Salnès, in the heart of D.O. Rias Baixas. It is two kilometers away from Cambados, in the province of Galicia. Galicia is one of the oldest areas in Spain, settled originally by the Celts. Considered by many experts to be the most prestigious white-wine producing region of Spain today, D.O. Rias Baixas has produced wine for centuries; though its renaissance owes much to the modernization of winemaking that has taken place over the last 15 years.
